Had 10,000 Questions Before Working With Ajay Devgn: Yami Gautam
After two sweet rom-coms, Yami Gautam is finally ready to break into the big league as she shoots for Action Jackson' with Ajay Devgn and director Prabhu Dheva. We caught up with the pretty girl at an endorsement event for Pantene and got her talking about her larger-than-life project. Excerpts from the interview:
Your last, Total Siyapaa, didn't do very well at the box office. What feedback have you gotten for your role?
Fortunately, my performance and look got good reviews. And as about the film, I'm still very much in touch with the team. You know it's true when they say that no matter how much hard work you put in, no one can judge how audiences will react. There were a number of factors that worked against the film, one being that it was a crowded weekend. Eventually, the journey is important. I met so many wonderful people and that's what you take away while moving on.
From light hearted romcoms, you're now shooting for a big budget, masala flick. What's the experience been like so far?
While the setup is so very different, I don't think it made too much to me as an actor. You still need to put in the same amount of effort and dedication. I'm thankful to Prabhu sir and the producers for having me in this film, but it's not so very different from my last films.
It's a Prabhu Dheva film. Will you be dancing?
(Laughs) Yes. Hopefully, pretty well and on my feet all the while.
Does dancing come to you easily or do you have two left feet?
I love dancing but with Prabhu Dheva, it's going to be something else. I'm sure I'll be nervous before we shoot those scenes because he is by far, the best dancer we have now.
What's shooting with Ajay been like?
I had ten thousand questions before I went on set. I wondered how it would be like because he's such a huge star but now that I've shot with him, I can say that he is one of the most humble, down to earth and chilled out actors I've worked with. He has no airs, he arrives on time, he doesn't take his stature for granted and that's great to observe. It speaks volumes when someone who's been around for so long has his feet on the ground like Ajay does.
Are you constantly fussed about how you're looking?
No. I used to be a girl who didn't care at all. In university, I'd oil my hair just before I left home for the examination hall, all my friends would go "eww" and I'd be thinking, ""Whatever. I'm going to get the top ranking anyway." Of course, now I'm in a profession that requires me to care about how I look but if you saw me when I'm chilling at home with my parents, you wouldn't be able to tell that I was an actor!
How do you deal with bad hair days when you don't have a stylist around?
I'm not finicky. I can do basic stuff like a fishtail braid, a high ponytail or bun.
What's a hair dare you'd never attempt?
I'd never go bald. The thought alone is scary! Even if it was for a role, I'd get them to work around it.
And finally, what's happening next?
I'm still shooting for Action Jackson and you're going to hear about my next project really, really soon!
