I'll take Bollywood away from Salman Khan: Chris Gayle

BANGALORE: What might have been just a joke that Chris Gayle shared with Shahrukh Khan a while ago, may just become reality. The cricketer, it seems, is seriously looking at a Bollywood career in the near future.

"I am going to rock Bollywood and take it away from Salman Khan," says Chris with a smile, adding, though, that he hasn't seen a single Bollywood film yet.

We dig a little further to check if the mighty cricketer is pulling a fast one but, Chris says it all with a straight and serious expression, "Shah Rukh will sort it out for me I am sure." He adds, "I did joke about it with Shahrukh, but I am seriously looking for a big break in Bollywood next year. I do see myself doing a Bollywood film and even music videos for that matter. Gaylestorm will hit Bollywood soon."

Chris, who enjoys the beats of Indian music, has danced with Shah Rukh on stage in the past and, though, he hasn't met many Bollywood sirens other than Preity Zinta and Shlipa Shetty, he finds a few of them quite pretty. "I am sure all the heroines would want to meet me, just ask them," says Chris with a cheeky grin.

For Chris, IPL is a mix of both entertainment and sport, he says, "It is a business where a lot of money has been invested and every team wants to win. The responsibility of the players is to help place their brand above the other."

Salman Khan bats for Junaid

It was a match between celebrities on the one hand and handicapped people on the other. However, it was Aamir Khan's son Junaid who walked away with the honours.

We told you how as President of the Rotaract Club of HR College, Junaid organised Tuesday's fund-raiser match toward helping handicapped people in the remote areas of Satara district.

While papa Aamir helped his son with all the nitty-gritties of the event, he could not be present at the match as he was being interviewed by a television channel. Aamir's absence notwithstanding, Junaid appeared in full control, taking care of the celebrities who showed up in good measure. And, he was helped along in no small measure by Salman Khan, who was captain of the celeb team. Junaid was really hands-on as he ran from pillar to post, handling various aspects of the event.

The afternoon started with a scintillating dance performance by Shiamak Davar's troupe, followed by a 15-over match.Salman being Salman, even joked that it was Rani and not he who was the captain. As for the actor playing, he batted, fielded, the works... After a quick knock, he took time out to speak to the crowd, asking them if they were enjoying the game. As for the rest of the stars, even though the match started at noon in the blistering heat, none of them seemed to be complaining. They played along happily for the charity match.

Sallu's family and friends were present in full force. They were all there: Arbaaz, Sohail, Prateik Babbar, Dilip Joshi of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah fame and Rani Mukerji among others.

Sohail signed autographs for some of his fans who were following him around.

Whenever any celeb got out, the players in the other team would actually go and thank them for taking the time to be there. There was this one person who had forgotten to attach his artificial leg because he was late. He fielded with the help of his crutches and Sallu cheered him and gave him maximum support. The actor also gave away the trophies to the winners. Around six to seven thousand people had gathered at the North Stand at Brabourne Stadium to watch the match.

Rani Mukerji too addressed the crowd, saying it was nice that celebs had taken time from their busy schedule to support a good cause. The money collected from the match will be used to buy artificial limbs for handicapped people in the remote areas of Satara District. Unlike Mumbai, Satara doesn't have many hospitals or facilities for them.

Salman's gift to Kabir Khan

Salman Khan has added his Ek Tha Tiger-director, Kabir Khan and his wife Mini Mathur in his best pals list. The actor showered his love by gifting them something special.

Salman and Kabir have bonded well and became best friends during the shooting of Ek Tha Tiger. According to a unit hand, Salman is fond of Kabir and his wife and surprised them with a pair of wrist watches from Being Human's new collection.

The couple loved them and felt special with Salman's gesture. Before this, Salman invited Kabir and the entire unit of Ek Tha Tiger to his Panvel farm house and played the perfect host. He even treated the entire unit with some great good food over the weekend.

Kabir is confident about Salman and thinks no other actor would have suited the role of Tiger. Promotions of the film will begin with the teaser launch on May 11.

Salman Khan finds a new buddy

Bollywood actor Salman Khan takes friendship seriously. And the biggest of actors will vouch for the fact that it does pay to be in Bhai's good books. We're not talking about the women here though.

The latest actor to be included under his wing is Telugu star Ram Charan Teja - who is currently shooting in Mumbai for the remake of 'Zanjeer'.

A parcel of home-made biryani sent to the sets by Salman, for Ram, is what seems to have confirmed the bond between the two actors. Ram Charan plays Vijay, one of the many roles that Amitabh Bachchan rocked during the early years of his career. While Salman and the Bachchan family may not see eye-to-eye, his fondness for the new Vijay has got a lot of industry insiders talking.

"Salman and Ram Charan are very close. They have been so for a while now. Since Ram is shooting in Mumbai now, Salman has decided that they should catch up as often as possible. The two met for dinner last week at Salman's house. Earlier this week, Salman sent Ram Charan a special biryani to the sets of Zanjeer," says a source.

Actors under Sallu's wing

Pulkit Samrat: Salman took time off to launch the audio of debutant actor Pulkit Samrat's film Bitto Boss, and was also present for the film's preview. He was all praise for Pulkit's acting skills too.

Arjun Kapoor: It was apparently on Salman's behest that Boney Kapoor's son Arjun decided to become an actor. Salman mentored Arjun, who was overweight at the time, keeping a close tab on the actor's progress and guided him through the transformation - from losing weight to grooming, to be an actor. The two may even star in a film together later this year.

Sonakshi Sinha: Sonakshi, who was a fashion designer by profession, turned actress, all thanks to Salman who even cast her in the lead role in his hit film Dabangg.

Preity Zinta: When Salman heard that Preity's debut production Ishkq in Paris was stuck for technical reasons, he offered to play a cameo to help up the film's stakes. Preity tweeted about the progress recently.

Should you trust your home to a star wife?

A Pune realty firm sold its first luxury penthouse within days of announcing its association with Shah Rukh Khan's wife, Gauri. Suzanne Roshan, Twinkle Khanna, Shamita Shetty - the glamorous decorators' club is swelling. Why do star wives take to interiors, and do they deserve their crores?

A1999 M.F. Husain painting in white, black and cobalt blue brings together a hookah, a bare-breasted woman, a peacock-that-could-be-a-snake and an elephant squatting like a bored country bumpkin, on one wall of Hindi film star Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri's office that she is reported to have done up. The office is located in a building annexed to their palatial bungalow in Mumbai. Of the three niches along the side of an adjoining room (which overlooks a pool), one is occupied by a Louis Vuitton trunk, another, by a model of the Kolkata Knight Riders bus, and the third by a juke box with songs from Johnny Cash and The Everly Brothers.

A green tasbih dangles off the side of the Quran placed on a carved rihal on the topmost shelf behind Khan's mahogany desk, and on a shelf below lies a wax replica of his hand - not the sort you can get for a fiver at Madame Tussauds. This model, prepared by the wax museum especially for the actor, is a perfect copy, right down to each implanted strand of hair. The place could well be a museum, but it's not nearly as intimidating. Heart, or as Gauri Khan puts it, warmth makes a difference.

We are not sure if any of the customers investing in the 10 penthouses being designed by her for Glitterati, a Kolte Patil project in Pune, have been to this room, or are privy to Khan's personal sense of decor. Yet, the developers sold their first luxury penthouse within days of announcing their association with the star wife.

Like fish take to water

The 'Bollywoodisation' of branded residences in micro-markets of Mumbai, Noida, Bengaluru and Pune is gaining strength. And star wives, with and without a degree in architecture and interiors, are being chased by realtors.

Actor Akshay Kumar's wife Twinkle Khanna is designing for ORB, Supertech's luxury residential project in Noida. Former actress Amrita Arora is involved with Lunkad Sky Vie in Pune. Last year, actress Shilpa Shetty's sister Shamita Shetty quit an acting career that had never really taken off, and parked herself in London to study interior design.

A Mumbai-based builder's spouse, who hired a star wife to do up her apartment for 25 crore, says she hoped to feed off the sophistication. "I wanted to live with the same glamour that she did. The response from friends at the housewarming party was unbelievable. After a couple of years, we did encounter technical snags, like with the plumbing. I had to get a trained architect to set it right. But I'm not complaining."

It's this star-craze that real estate developers are milking.

Yogesh Mehra, senior vice president, Sales (marketing and business development) with Kolte Patil says, Khan's name has an immediate association with luxury. "She lives the lifestyle, so, when she designs a space using her aesthetics, it reinstates confidence in the customer."

She also costs more than a professional

A veteran fashion designer who has dabbled in interiors says the transition from star homemaker to interior designer is easy. "It's their husband's identity and the access it allows them that adds weight to their worth. The moneyed are desperate to have say, Twinkle do up their home. They could be paying anything from 50 lakh upwards." Unlike, professional architects who charge a set fee, star wives tend to demand a percentage of the entire cost of the unit, sometimes as much as 20 per cent, making them far more expensive despite operating in the same competitive real estate market as the rest.

Director-producer David Dhawan's wife Lali Dhawan, who has worked on costume designer Manish Malhotra's Juhu home, says, "We have an edge. We live in the midst of glamour. We travel, visit the best homes and hotels across the world, and that helps. We start off with our own homes, and land contracts when visitors like what they see and approach us." Dhawan, who was involved in designing Salman Khan's home, was asked by the actor to lend inputs when his then girlfriend actress Katrina Kaif was doing up her Mumbai pad.

Who needs a degree?

While some, like Hrithik Roshan's wife Suzanne Roshan, who studied at Brooks College, California before she set up the Suzanne Roshan House of Design, are trained designers, others like Dhawan and Khan rely on instinct and individual aesthetics. The only design experience, Khan for instance, has, is doing up Mannat, her sea-facing mansion in Mumbai, and her London and Dubai residences. Recently, she tied up with Roshan's one-year-old interiors store, The Charcoal Project to design a 50-piece collection that was a sell-out. She is currently working on two projects in tandem with Roshan, and says she is open to working on smaller accounts and budgets too, including single room projects provided she is inspired. "Just because product carries a Cavalli tag, doesn't mean it's the best," she says.

Shetty, however, decided she needed practical training if she wanted to get seriously into interiors . What started off as an in-house passion while designing sister Shilpa and her NRI husband Raj Kundra's opulent Mumbai nightclub, Royalty, proved to be inspiration to take off to Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London for a six-month course. Shetty is now training with a senior architect in Mumbai.

One of the first star wives to turn designer, Zarine Sanjay Khan regrets not acquiring a professional degree. "When women get married, they collect diamonds. I went to Chor Bazaar and picked up Spanish and Italian furniture to do up my home. Rekha and Dimple (Kapadia) visited me, and were wowed," remembers Khan. The first home she designed was veteran actor Manoj Kumar's, who wanted his residence redone without changing the old, heavy furniture it housed. "I made a profit of 3,000! Hema Malini saw his bedroom and signed me on. Then we got contracts from producer B R Chopra, Rajender Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Parveen Babi. We did them all," says Khan, who was famous for introducing painted wooden furniture in soft pastels at a time when everyone else was working with brown polish.

Is customer really king?

Geeta Hundlani, a resident of Breach Candy in Mumbai was a client of Zarine Khan 22 years ago. She remembers Khan as being professional and seeking her inputs often. "She met us several times to understand our lifestyle, and involved me in furniture and fabric choices before drawing up plans. The house was completed bang on schedule," says Hundlani.

This style of working seems a generation apart from what Gauri Khan plans to do, now. "I'll be working with the customer, and selling him my ideas. There will be changes of course, but we will try to get him to come around to appreciating what I like," she says. Khan will present buyers with 3D schematics to give them a sense of what the finished home will look like. The interaction, she admits, "will be limited". Kolte Patil's Mehra says, "The client can tell her if they would like a study made, for instance, and they are free to pick the colour palette, but 85 per cent of the decor will be left to Gauri. Otherwise, it would be akin to buying a Louis Vuitton handbag and asking them to change the handle."

With minimal client involvement, Khan's association with the developer is along the lines of legendary rock star Mick Jagger's daughter Jade's association with the Lodha Group, where according to reports, a 4 BHK apartment will cost 4.8 crore. "It's all about luxury. India has a very luxurious palate, so we've tried using strong lights, lots of colour... red and gold, black and white," Jagger told reporters when the tie-up was first announced last May.

Mumbai-based interior designer Nisha Jamwal, who has worked on large-scale projects, including the lounge at Jaipur airport, labels it an image-building exercise. "When Jade Jagger works for an Indian developer, it's actually about luxury branding. They try to maximise profits by connecting her brand value to their project."

Glamour over expertise?

Mumbai-based architect Milind Pai, whose firm has designed the homes and offices of some of Mumbai's famous jewellers and celebrities, finds the modus operandi strange. "A professional interior decorator works within the client's budget, and according to the customer's taste. But you must understand that this type of client isn't concerned about getting value for money. He's after snob value," says Pai. Rajiv Saini is the man behind actor-director Farhan Akhtar's home in Mumbai. He agrees with Pai, when he says, "I'm not sure how far a star wife can deliver. It's not about you having a great bedroom, and replicating it for clients. Design is serious business."

Manjeet Bhullar, interior designer to the rich and famous, believes glamour girls can't match professionals. "They may be great buyers of expensive things, but not geared for the everyday grind of a design company. It adds to your social wor th if you say your living room has the Twinkle touch. But doing homes is complex. You've got to be good."

John Hitchcox, spokesperson for Yoo, an international design firm says, celebrity designers instil confidence in buyers about the credibility of the design, which is important in a highly competitive market. "But, before a buyer looks at the celebrity status of a designer, he must ask what the designer's philosophy on living is. Does he understand your lifestyle and needs?" Yoo founder Philippe Starck is involved with Yoopune, a residential project in Pune that includes a spa nestled in a five-acre forest, for Panchshil Realty.

Jamwal argues that the 'decorator' tag fits star wives better. "Globally, an interior designer needs a license to practice. Designing houses demands knowledge of architecture. Most of the new entrants are decorators, not designers - they do curtains, bed covers, furnishings. Do they have practical knowledge about plumbing and ducting?"

Would Khan like to answer that one?

TV serials to copy Bollywood blockbusters

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Jamai Raja, Pardes, Daraar, Biwi No.1, Jab We Met, Vivaah, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Besides being Bollywood blockbusters, they have something else in common. All of these have been made or are on the verge of being made into daily soaps.

Sooraj Barjatya's Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai was based entirely on Vivaah, until the storyline was tweaked, Aditya Chopra's Shah Rukh Khan starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi found a small screen version in Do Hanson Ka Joda starring Shaleen Bhanot and Shubhangi Atre. Love You Zindagi, Star Plus' weekend show was a televised version of Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met.

Of course, this was also the first adaptation where the original filmmaker was consulted creatively. As Imtiaz himself puts it, he'd have loved to make a "TV series out of Jab We Met if I hadn't made a film out of it. Geet and Aditya's story had many layers that could be tapped". It was another matter altogether that reality show star Pavitra Punia and model turned actor Siddharth Shukla were not the best bets for the roles they reprised and the show bit dust much before it was expected to!

Not that the small screen shows haven't been 'inspired' by Bollywood films before. In Dill Mill Gayye, entire sequences from Dil Toh Pagal Hai (the 'Aur Paas' scene between Shah Rukh-Madhuri to the Lonavala sequences between SRK-Madhuri-Aruna Irani) and Andaz Apna Apna were recreated between its lead couple Karan Singh Grover and Shilpa Anand.

Ranbir Kapoor's famous towel dance sequence from Saawariya was reshot with Karan Tacker (Rang Badalti Odhni) and Nikhil Chaddha (Miley Jab Hum Tum Season 2). Movie songs have been reshot in shows - Salaam-e- Ishq (Dill Mill Gayye, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?), Bahon Ke Darmiyan ( Mrs Kaushik Ke Paanch Bahuyein, Bade Achche Lagte Hain), Anarkali Disco Chali (Punar Vivaah) etc etc.

Now comes the twist in the proverbial Bollywood tale. David Dhawan's Biwi No. 1 seems to have found a fairly faithful copy in Ekta Kapoor's Kya Hua Tera Vaada with the typical Balaji tadka. Pawan Shankar tries to do a Salman Khan, while the svelte Mouli Ganguly in a new, revamped mode reprises Sushmita Sen's role.

Mona Singh plays the hassled, much harried hausfrau, 'inspired' by Karisma Kapoor. There are even similar supporting actors. Delnaz doing a Tabu, Apara Mehta as Himani Shivpuri. Rajashri's Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga is loosely inspired by Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit's Jamai Raja. Of course the characters have been 'modified' suitably.

Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava is also a faithful enough copy of the Juhi Chawla-Arbaaz Khan-Rishi Kapoor starrer Daraar which still is Arbaaz's best screen portrayal till date. Karanvir Bohra takes sadism to newer highs (or lows) as the overtly possessive and psychopath Virat Dobriyal in Dil Se..., Sriti Jha as the cowering Jahnvi might not be a match for Juhi, but hottie Harshad Chopra as the supportive boyfriend is a showstealer.

Shraddha Arya and Sudeep Sahir's Main Laxmi Tere Angan Ki is inspired by the 60s hit Saajanand the 80s hit, Mithun Chakravorty-Rati Agnihotri starrer, Pasand Apni Apni.

Bade Achche Lagte Hai, another Ekta Kapoor show is 'inspired' by a Kumar Gaurav-Poonam Dhillion flick made in the 80s, Teri Kasam. Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar are reliving Girish Karnad and Ranjeeta's roles. Of course Ram and Sakshi's screen chemistry and histrionic ability completely outshine their big screen predecessors. Ekta's also reportedly planning to create a love story based on Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge with Sara (of Dhoond Legi Manzil Hamein) Khan and Nishant Malkani replaying Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's roles.

Sources in Balaji say, Zee TV has already planned "a slot for the show and it might take off post IPL". Incidentally, Ekta also intends to recreate Subhash Ghai's Pardes and is reportedly working on the casting and the script. The show was originally planned for Life Ok, but nothing has been finalized yet. JD Majethia's Hamari Bahu Ka Byah, soon to air on Sony TV is based on Dil Toh Pagal Hai. Gaurav Khanna essays the role played by SRK in the original.

Considering Bollywood filmmakers are in a remake mode, it's poetic justice perhaps that the big screen hits are now going 'small'. Will they work? Well, that's an answer that lies only with the audience, wielding the most powerful weapon of them all - the remote contol. If the storyline is gripping and the ensemble cast powerful, even 'inspired' films can be made to appear original!

The Khans do, Rajinikanth doesn't!

If you are a celeb, signing an endorsement is a given. However, today these deals are being used in the marketing of a film with revenues running into tens of crores. Some celebs see it as a secondary source of income but others aren't lured by the big bucks.

Brands are us
Cricket and Bollywood are two hot favourites in India. And it's not surprising that most brands prefer to sign on either cricketers or actors to take their brand forward in a country that is recognized as fast-developing economy and a market with tremendous potential. Last year, the Brand Sachin versus Brand Dhoni war heated up and today, the two remain the leaders in raking in the moolah from endorsement deals. In fact, Dhoni's fee shot upto more than ' 10 crore annually per brand post the World Cup win and he is one of the highest-paid endorsers.

In Bollywood, it is the Khans - Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman - who continue to rule the roost. Shah Rukh's smart endorsement strategy has him plugging brands he champions for into his films and as result, less personal losses. For instance, his endorsement deals ensured that his RA.One notched up a whopping' 52 crores

Brand deals have turned so lucrative today that most celebs are tempted to sign up - even if it means a regional deal rather than national. In the south, legend Kamal Haasan has only now jumped onto the brandwagon at the age of 57. The Ulaganayagan, as he is popularly known as, didn't seem to be tempted to speak up for any brand despite being an extremely successful actor with global recognition. Another legend who has returned to the screen to endorse a brand is yesteryear Bollywood star Rajesh Khanna. And the younger celebs are not far behind today - they may be struggling for films, but even a single endorsement deal ensures a steady annual income.

Superstar never got tempted
This man, who's treated like God by his fans, hasn't even entertained a preliminary meeting with a company! The Superstar has ruled Kollwyood for decades and has spoken his mind on cinema and politics. But he hasn't been swayed by the brandwagon. Money doesn't woo him nor does fame that comes through these deals. He has achieved a status that is beyond these and frankly, does he even have a price?

According to a source, it seems that a cola company tried approaching Rajinikanth in 2006 to be their brand ambassador and even offered him ' 2 crore. But he didn't even allow them to get into his orbit for a meeting. Apparently, they kept increasing the amount but he didn't budge. It looks like the Superstar prefers to entertain his fans through his films rather than drive fans to buy products he may or may not believe in.

Ad facts
Salman Khan recently said he endorses only things he uses.
po*n star Sunny Leone just signed her first brand endorsement for a mobile company.
Madhuri Dixit was found to be too expensive to be the 'face' of Maharashtra.
Mahesh Babu is the first south actor to be signed on by a cola company for a national campaign.
Kareena and Katrina are the top two women brand ambassadors.

Rs. 6-crore promotion for Aamir's 'Satyamev'

Actor Aamir Khan seems to be creating history with Satyamev Jayate every now and then.

And the recent news that has reached our ears is that the TV show just became one to have the highest spends on its marketing campaign.

It is heard that while Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan's TV shows spent approximately Rs. 3 crores on their marketing, the producers of Aamir's show have spent as much as Rs. 6 crores on the promotions.

This is the first time that an Indian TV show has spent on its promotions. And the channel is confident is that every penny will be worth it.

Sonal Chauhan visits HIV positive kids

Bollywood actors like Salman Khan and John Abraham believes in supporting a cause that they have firm faith in. The latest to join the list is Sonal Chauhan.

The actress recently visited Suryodaya Aids Foundation in Pune and spent time with kids at the Foundation who are HIV positive.

She spoke to them about their hobbies, films and favourite actors. She even performed a little jig with the kids.

The kids were very glad to see her and one of the them even sang "Zarra Sa" from "Jannat" for Sonal.

Sonal was moved by their gesture and said that she "enjoyed spending time with the kids".

Meanwhile, on professional front, the actress is busy shooting with Neil Nitin Mukesh for " 3G".

Kid parties become flashier

AHMEDABAD: Today, young kids are fully wrapped up in stardust feel on their birthdays as their parents willingly turn into Santas throwing lavish bashes to make their evenings memorable! And forget a few thousands, such parties' budget now-a-days cross a few lakhs of rupees.

When Ryan Jagnani turned 3 this month, mom Nikita planned a theme party of talent hunt for a bollywood blockbuster. The kids walked in dressed up as new or old bollywood stars and danced on their favourite number on the glamorous neon-lighted stage with look-a-likes stars who were especially invited for party. Their items were showed live on screens as if to hunt the best talent. "My son knows names of many actors and actresses and loves to dance on numbers. The idea to host a bollywood theme party clicked to me as I wanted one of the most memorable celebrations," says Nikita.

However, this party-hosting ordeal did not impress his son as after the party small Ryan said, "All those who came in as Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan and Aaishwarya Rai had just dressed up like them. I know they were all fake. I asked you to actually call real stats not their look-a-likes."

With parents' enthusiasm, demands of kids are skyrocketing and a number of organizers are spinning good money riding this bandwagon.

Ramesh Makwana from Party Vibe, one of the kiddies party organizers in the city, says, "Parents want to do something novel and are ready to spend. The latest themes in demand are bollywood, angry birds, toy story and pool splash."

Urvi Shah, another kiddies party organizer says, "We get maximum orders in May as many parents whose kids' birthdays fall during March and April postpone the birthday celebrations and host it during summer holidays."

These parties have glitzy cut outs made to create special ambience, with well-lighted backdrops, balloons and also have interactive games like toy train, bungee jumpers, junior jumpers, balloon shooting, tin-throwing and more. Special kid-menu tailored for these parties often have mini-pizzas, smileys, shaped pastas, mini-idli-dosa, mini-burgers, shaped sandwiches, theme-cup-cakes, golas, jellos, cookie and chocolate counters.
