SurajHere's Book Log: April 2025

Book 1 :

Title - Vinayak Navache Chaskar Bhau.

Language - Marathi .

Editors - Meena Gokhle-Pansare, Shrikala Hattangadi.

Genre - Biography.

Type - Print Book.

Total Number of Pages - 227

Total Number Of Pages Read - 227

Thoughts about the book :

As the name evidences, the book is about Vinayak Chaskar. He was a producer , director at Doordarshan. The book is divided into two parts, one part is about his life & good and bad experiences he had when dealing with people in TV and films and the other part is about the experiences and opinions other people had with and about him when they were working together. Chaskar though Marathi was not born in Maharashtr but moved to Maharashtra to get better opportunities. On DD he produced many iconic Marathi shows including Gajra, Mukhavate ani Chehre and many plays including the very famous Aashrit featuring legendary Marathi theatre actor Bhakti Barve. It is a decent book that could have been written much better , I was editing it even as I was reading it. however if you can find it in the market, then you should have a read because it is like a documentation of the time that hasn't been documented , not much has been written about the starting days of Doordarshan . So if you want to dive a bit into that past and especially if you watched Mumbai Doordarshan then this book is for you.

Book 2 :

Title - Ganiti(Mathematicians)

Language - Marathi

Writers - Achyut Godbole, Dr. Madhvi Thakurdesai

Genre - Non-fiction History

Type - Print book

Total Number Of Pages - 527

Total Number Of Pages Read - 527

Total Number Of Pages Read - 527

Thoughts about the book :

As the name suggests, the book is about Mathematicians who have helped develop mathematics as we know today. It deals with ancient Mathematicians and mathematics through the history of humankind, however the authors make short work of mathematics in ancient cultures like Bhartiy(indic) and Greek cultures, even though they should have been dealt in more detials. People often overlook contribution of the Indic culture to world of Mathematics. Geometry played a very important role in Greek Mathematics, that is something I was aware about but had no idea how impactful it was in Greek culture. The book has a chapter dedicated to female mathematicians, the fact that it is a small chapter of about 15 odd pages says a lot about humanity, the way Hypatia was killed and other mathematicians targeted was terrible. Statistics, probability and Logic should have been given more space in the book and not just few pages. There are a few mistakes in the book, for instance, authors say Archimedes 'invented' taraaf(lever) but humankind has used lever since ancient times, just like wheel, nobody knows who invented lever, however Archimedes did study lever more than other inventors. The language of the book is ok but it could have been much better, books about mathematics need to have a very engaging approach and language.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Book 3 :

Title - 100 Selected Short Stories

Language - English

Writers - O. Henry

Genre - Fiction

Type - Print Book

Total Number Of Pages - 653

Total Number Of Pages Read - 653

Thoughts about the book :

Instead of Henry I was leaning towards Edgar Allen Poe's book, but at the last moment, chose Henry's short story selection and it was a good decision.

Henry's stories aren't morbid, the way he writes is kind of light hearted, witty and funny, funny not in the way for you to have a bellyful of laugh, but it puts a smile on your way, especially in the stories when the irony is obvious.

For instance in the gift of magi , the wife doesn't have any money to get a gift for her husband, so she sells her long hair and gets a beautiful chain for his watch which has been in family for generations but stil has a well worn leather belt, he on the other hand sells his watch to get her a tortouseshell expensive combs for the hair she has already sold by selling that very watch.

In another story, Cosmopolite, a well traveled man when in conversation with author, looks down upon people who are tied emotionally to their birthplace but then gets into a fistfight when somebody talks foul of his birthplace.

Then there is the man who, goes looking for his love interest and lands up in the very room in a boarding house where she had rented it and smells her scent and thinks she is around, he does not know she died in the same room some days back.

Each and every story is quite good and more importantly unpretentious and oh yes, there is that famous story, the last leaf that was made into Lootera starring Ranveer Singh.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am adding another book, hopefully I will finish it before deadline, it is 130 pages long so it wouldn't take much time. I hope adding more books to read is not against the rules.

Book 4

Title - Ahey ani Nahi

Language - Marathi

I started the first book , Meryn sure is fun! smiley36

She's also easy to relate to. I mean, I’m just like her, 'Yeah, all of this is crazy and unrealistic to me, but it’s also hot and interesting.'smiley37

Good choice to make the FL a loner—the abduction and her lack of homesickness doesn’t bother me much that way.smiley36

I liked how chaotic their first meeting went. They were both turned on, but also kind of creeped out by each other’s craziness smiley37.smiley37 That first kiss was kinda funny too smiley37

Even standing up on a chair, she only reaches his chin. What’s with this crazy height difference? smiley39smiley37Is she too small, or is he too big?

I liked his parents and Colton , all the characters are fun right now but let’s see how it goes smiley36

What's the book?

@B: wtf does this imply? Is she possibly a dwarf? smiley36

Sometimes writers go overboard with the description of appearances, no? Especially the cliche of "his eyes were dark as night or blah blah" smiley37

It's Bewitched & Bewildered series by Alanea Alder.

And she isn't dwarfsmiley36 She is 5 feet and a few inches, he is too tall considering he is bear shifter.
