Rapists aren't just garlanded in India. Rapists are given more respect than their victim could ever dream of. The sentences of the rapists of Bilkis Bano (the woman who was gang-raped along with her mother, right next to each other , when she was pregnant, whose daughter was murdered with a stone during the Gujarat riots ) , was commuted ,they were released two years ago. Garlanded yes. People ,including women lined up to touch their feet, seek their 'blessings ' ,feed them sweets and basically congratulate them for being such good people. One of them shared the dias with a politician. The sentences were obviously commuted due to political interference from the govt and the party high command. Khushboo Sundar, who says she's a victim of SA herself , tried her best to downplay the role of her party ,pretended it happened out of nowhere and feigned anger. Before jumping ship from the Congress ,she knew exactly what kind of misogyny the BJP indulges in. But hey...she was 'angry'.
No we aren't derailing the thread by talking about this because this is the kind of precedent we have set. You reward rapists - you get more of them.
ETA The Supreme Court thankfully restored the sentences and sent those monsters back to jail early this year
