30-Day Song Challenge: | My OBT

I know I am not posting daily. You get distracted. Today, a song about drugs or alcohol.

Champagne Problems

While not literally about champagne, it is one of Taylor Swift's most poignant and heart-wrenching songs. It's sheer lyrical poetry from the perspective of a woman who could not say yes to her lover's marriage proposal. Sometimes, love is not enough and it just isn't right. You have to break a heart to do the right thing.

In Bollywood musicals, chockful of songs, the songs tend to be a promotional device, sometimes distracting from the plot. But every now and then comes a song that is so integral to the fabric of the narrative. When I first read The Hunger Games, I did not think much of 'The Hanging Tree.' It felt more like a poem in the book.

But then I saw Mockingjay I and the song is so beautifully integrated into the film. The first time listening to the swelling chorus as rebels march on the dam on screen just gave me goosebumps. The sound mixing and the instrumental gravitas as the voice transitions from JLaw to the chorus is mesmerizing. And the high notes - chefs kiss. Now everytime I read Hunger Games series - The Hanging Tree hits different.

And when I read Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the Hanging Tree had such visceral and haunting effect. It didn't just enhance the book. It made the original series even more deliciously complex as now the readers/viewers can image how Snow felt hearing both renditions of the song. Dang, how must it feel to have a song from your youth that you tried to erase come back at you in the face of a revolution? Also Rachel Zegler brings the darker more rustic original version perfectly to life. This is how music can elevate the cinematic (and literary experience).

Loved Nitya menon's vocals in this song.. She was a breath of fresh air in this movie saying her own dialogues without any others giving dubbing.. In those days We were so vexed with other actresses fake acting and half baked lip synchronising they did when someone else was giving dubbing to their dialogues in Telugu. Her character looked authentic and relatable in this movie bcz of her dubbing her own dialogues and her natural acting. This movie has been my all time favourite with breezy fun cute love story... Loved side characters too.. We rarely see enjoying side characters in Telugu movies, this movie was one of those.
