I find it annoying that people in North are not even trying to read basic history of Cholas and commenting that story was confusing etc
Worst is asking to change original tamil names, I mean wtf

I feel they should have sent lazy Ash š everywhere in the north and made her promote the movie . In north people werenāt that aware of this movie. But I feel PS 2 will do great business in Hindi belt too coz by then many people would have watched the 1 at part on OTT.
Same happened with KGF too. KGF 1 wasnāt a huge hit in north but there was so much craze for 2 part coz public loved it on digital.
I agree they should have promoted better in North. All they did was just two press conferences and one Kapil Sharma show, which also Ash missed š¤
Agree... I am waiting for PS1 to come on digital. Hopefully more people watch it then and become fans of the series and will wait for part 2.
Agree with most of you all. The success of PS 1 is commendable because it didnāt have the high octane war scenes and beautiful picturesque songs and focused on dialogue.

KGF 1 had a great openings 10cr+ tough competition to zero.
PS1 opened to 2cr with similar scale release . PS1 is a reginional hit not PAN India hit like KGF , RRR or even Pushpa

You're actually wrong. KGF also had a 2 cr opening and grossed 44 cr in Hindi. PS1 is likely to end up somewhere around that.

PSI is a South Indian movie with little hype among people from other region. Most people do not care for this chola period drama. It's not a blockbuster in the country when this movie not popular among people from North, East and West India.
Plus this is not even a Hindi movie in first place.
But the movie never had any intention of being pan-Indian. The primary audience was always Tamil. Both domestic as well as the diaspora. . They used quite a lot of classic Tamil which is pretty much incomprehensible even to people from other Southern States who do understand modern Tamil. Other than being dubbed in other languages and last-minute lacklustre promotions they made little effort to bring in other audience. Because this is Mani Ratnam's homage to the epic Tamil novel and Tamil people. The others are welcome to enjoy it and it's a bonus. But he's not going to pander with Bollywood cameos or dumb it down. He did compromise with the character's names in the dubbed versions. For eg: the more familiar Aditya instead of Aditha in the original. I rather liked a peek into an exotic culture and history which I'm not at all familiar with.
Errr sorry Donāt agree there ā¦
Ps1 didnāt make huge money because mani ratnam is an ace storyteller ā¦.it made money because he had a preset , already popular story that had hype to begin with. Tamil folk were emotionally attached to the novel and looked at is as an almost legacy and pride ā¦
It worked coz of the story not the story teller
Despite the fact that he had strong source material, his execution was below par to say the least
None of the characters got proper establishmentsā¦neither were situations built up correctly or given time to marinate ,
Sooo much time is spent on unnecessary scenes ā¦.karthi getting chased around ā¦on songs (that song in the palace with the mahakali dance ā¦why is that even necessaryā¦didnāt seem to add entertainment or value to the story š)
Soo much stuff can be cut to focus on more important meaty stuff ā¦
important aspects like that ash vikram story are glossed over in shabby editing cuts ā¦
.Trishaās Kundavai is meant to be a highly intelligent woman invoked in politics but we see her for approx 5 scenes where she waltzes in and out without doing much
.Ash got a good chunk of backstory etc but her beautiful yet emotionally frozen face didnāt convey the nuances the character needed
And the whole ash and trash face offā¦so they passive aggressively taunt each others beauty and thatās it? š³šā¦.
I donāt even remember jayam Raviās performance and he plays the title character š„²š„²
There is no incentive built to invest in the cholas ā¦or root against their enemiesā¦or root for any character (except maybe karthi but thatās more coz the actor karthi is an adorable cutie half the time) ā¦
ā¦itās like a sequence of events one after the other narrated with no emotional connect , no highs and no lows in the screenplay (particularly those who havenāt read the novel) ā¦
Cool story broā¦.donāt care ā¦š¤·š¼āāļø
I won't say PS-1 is the best thing since sliced bread. There have been better historical movies. But Mani got a lot of things right. It's unfair to give the book all the credit and the film maker none. Rather the norm is that the film maker usually ruins the books. LOTR and Harry Potter being exceptions. Sure Mani got an edge with a full fledged story with well rounded characters. But he stayed true to the spirit of the book and did not change it to suit modern palate.
I liked Aish-Vikram story better than Karthi's and they are the bigger stars tooand should have gotten more screen space. But Karthi's character and Jayam Ravi's are the heroes in the book and get maximum space there too. So Mani was only being true to the book and the book-reading audience's expectations.
I'm sorry you felt that the Trisha-Aish face off was understated and passive aggressive. Because that's the way women fight, at least the well-born ones.It is considered low-class to shout or say what's on your mind. Instead it's to be sweet like honey and give poisonous barbs. Kundavai and Nandini are experts at mind games. Baradwaj Rangan in his Q&A pointed out how Kundawai made Nandini come all the way down to greet her. Because she's the Emperor's daughter and Nandini is the wife of a vassal king. Kundavai settled bickering vassals and chiefs by basically auctioning off her royal brothers. Both the brothers are interested in commoner women at one point. And Kundavai has no problem in quashing the romance and using her position to tell them off.
Check out Baradwaj Rangan's Q and A about PS-1 where he points out many things which I didn't notice.

My problem with the face off was not that it was understated ā¦I surely didnāt expect them to pounce on each other with claws and yell, if thatās what u are assuming ā¦I am well aware these are royalty and thatās how they would fight
My problem was lack of establishment for it to feel like a big deal
A confrontation requires build up which this one severely lacked ā¦
For eg,in bajirao mastani when priyanka and deepika confront each other before pingaa and she taunts her calling her a keep ā¦.there is no loud shouting or overacting there but there is drama ā¦there is palpable tension that they spent time on building (how uncomfortable priyanka gets around Deepika in previous scenes, their whole 3 in a marriage dynamic)
Here u have the confrontation happening a mere few scenes after Trisha is introduced ā¦there is no heft to it because there is no establishment of their uneasy dynamic ā¦.itās a āyeh whateverā moment for those who didnāt read the books
And there is a lot of scenes like that throughout which needed more ābrewingāā¦thatās where the screenplay lacked because it didnāt vest in emotions or characters ā¦.it just told us their names and qualities ā¦.didnāt develop them (probably coz they assumed ppl are already aware of the characters which dosent apply to the non book reading folk like the rest of the country)
Manis subtlety and his understated approach is hardly a concern ā¦.
To me it felt like eating food that didnāt marinate in its spices
Like it was haphazardly put together in the last minute as compared to letting it rest, marinate and develop in the cooking process
This needed to be a Netflix series ā¦not a movie ā¦
Kundavai was the person who threw out Nandhini from the palace in their teenage period. She was an orphan who was more beautiful than Kundhavai. Kundi didn't want an orphan girl to be the wife of her brother and future queen of the kingdom. Thats the reason she called her mother and threw Nandhini out of the kingdom. Later Nandhini took shelter in Pandiya Kingdom.
Only the Tamil version PS1 is sure shot hit. It's not doing well in Telugu and Hindi versions.
Overseas also it is the Tamil version which is doing well.
Wish Maniratnam spent sometime on establishing the background and characters so that non Tamilians also could relate to the story.

SLB thrives on melodrama and relishes theatrical confrontations between his principals. That's just his style. Just look at the Paro-Chandramukhi confrontation and dancing together in Dola re. I don't believe the older version or the book had that. It would have been inconceivable for Paro to come to a brothel. Just like Alia's music tuition at a brothel in Kalank. If SLB was to do PS-1 everyone will be as volatile and emotional as Aditya Karikalan.Mani simply did something different which is equally good.
Bajirao came from a community practicing monogamy. So Kasi had some justification for her resentment. Also she's the legitimate wife and can get away with a lot. In PS-1 Aish's husband is a vassal king and courtier and hence Nandini is subservient to Kundavai, the Emperor's daughter. At the same time Kundavai, the consummate politician knows that she can't treat Nandini with the same disrespect and contrempt as before. Even in the book they are merely described as trading poisonous barbs and compared to dancing like two cobras. And Nandini (at least post the murder) never loses her temper and is meant to be a contrast to her volatile lover Aditya Karikalan. Especially in the last book.
And there is a lot of scenes like that throughout which needed more ābrewingāā¦thatās where the screenplay lacked because it didnāt vest in emotions or characters ā¦.

I'd have loved a web-series too .One which takes a lot of time to explore the characters more. But OTT is still making inroads in India. Films are still the preferred option to get the story to maximum number of audience. I rather doubt they'd have minted as much money out of OTT. And all these stars wouldn't have agreed to act in a series either. Not only because of the prestige of films but also the dates.Mani , the cast and crew were fully aware that they're making a would-be-classic which will forever be etched in Tamil cinema history. They wanted to be the first and set a standard. In a few years time someone else will make it on OTT. Maybe a better version maybe not.I rather pity the poor actor they'll choose in Aish's place. The constant comparisons...
