Between Omkara and Haider, I love Haider more because of how beautifully they’ve taken a very relevant Indian issue and integrated it with Hamlet and made it into its own piece of art. It’s not straight up Hamlet it has layers and richness and culture into it which is why it’s so special. Everything about it is perfect from the story to cinematography to the music, direction and performances. It’s Shahid’s career’s best performance. Tabu and K K Menon are also amazing.

Omkara I need to revisit as well, I watched it many many years ago and I remember being completely awestruck by Saif’s performance he did a complete 180 from his usual screen image and it surprised everyone.

I think Vishal has done the best adaptation of Shakespeare’s work not just in Bollywood but across all cinematic platforms. He made the stories his own while still keeping its integrity intact. And that’s what a brilliant filmmaker and storyteller is. I wish he does more Shakespeare adaptations.

OMG me too! I havent watched Maqbool either. I just never got a chance but I definitely would watch it soon.

love what u mentioned about Haider. that film was not everyone's cup of tea. It was dark, gritty but some great cinema was delivered by Vishal and team. I absolutely loved Shahid's acting in that movie, definitely his career best.

Omkara was a surprise package for me coz of the actors. did not expect Saif to act like he did in the movie. Langda Tyagi was a mad mad man.

@ bold: could not agree more!

Also, lets not forget what a great music composer he is as well. He has composed music for all his films and he has never gone wrong. He even won a national award for Haider's music direction and very rightly so.

The thing is Omkara satisfies both the commercial and artistic taste of the viewer, it is such a sweet spot and there are very few films who manage to do this. And significant credit for this can be attributed to Beedi and Namak isq ka clubbed with Naina thug lenge . 😆 Vishal B is as good a music director and his combination with Gulzar is just phenomenal. The dialogues of the movie are just chef's kiss

Totally agree. Beedi and Namak Isk ka were mass favourites the year Omkara released. Naina thag lenge is just ❤️. All of them though have such deep lyrics (even Beedi) .

"Nainon ki zubaan pe bharosa nahi aata

Likhat parat, na raseed na khaata

Saari baat hawai"

❤️

And you are totally on point about the dialogues. I still remember a lot of them, even AD's kathor. Omkara had sufficient buffer for comedy and the songs. Vishal Bharadwaj caught the actual rustic nerve of the hinderland. Which is why for me Omkara wins over the technically superior but too intense Maqbool.

Omkara's dialogues were brilliant especially Langda Tyagi's.😆 Also that famous line of Desdemona's father about her deception, how beautifully they incorporated the same word 'Thug' into both the dialogue and song...Jo ladki apne baap ko thug sakti hai woh kisi aur ki sagi kya hogi and towards the later part of the movie comes Naina thug lenge. Beauty.

The likes of Vishal B, RGV tapped into the gritty rural/semi-urban backdrop movies with real good commercial sensibilities and retained the flavour. Such a breathe of fresh air.

yeah I was very very young when Maqbool came out, I had zero understanding for good cinema but I’ll redeem myself and watch it soon.

Haider is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea the subject is very controversial. But it’s made with such conviction that you can’t help but feel connected to the story. I remember bawling while watching this movie that much it moved me.

And the music is just out of this world! What can I say Vishal is a genius and Gulzar along with him just creates magic. I was listening to it’s album today (thanks to this thread) and it has so many forms of music rock (aao na) love song (khul kabhi toh) folk (bismil) But they’re all well integrated into the story and the Kashmiri back drop, lots of Urdu shayari and beautiful words. While Omkara’s music has the rustic UP feel to it Naina and O Saathi re are my absolute favs. Also I would love to mention Rekha Bharadwaj here I just love her deep voice, I love her songs as well.

Like I said he should do more Shakespeare there is King Lear, Merchant of Venice and even Romeo and Juliet deserves a proper adaptation and only Vishal can do justice to it.

I was going to post Omkara's dialogues as well, but I gave that thought as people might not like a few.
