Though she became famous because of Ek do teen in late 80s but she became a top notch singer only after Gulshan / Anuradha broke Mangeshkar's monopoly together and later they both switched to devotional songs.

Kyon Bhai...SLB was going to donate the money from the movie he was making to charity??
A couple of years ago, Alka Yagnik was in New Jersey pre-Covid 19. She was interviewed on our local Desi Radio. At the end of the interview, he asked her to hum two lines for her fans. And also suggested the song from movie " Tamasha" Agar tum saath ho.
Alka flatly refused and instead told him, that she would sing at the concert and all those who desired to hear her, could do so there. I was driving back from work and this really stunned me.
Greed not sure, but attitude plenty.
Bhansal I has reputation of getting things done free of cost because he thinks being in his film is artist reward
Asking for money for your work is not greedy.
bsck in those days, there were no contracts or anything, how would she know who to trust.
Everyone else is discussing money and professionalism and I am stuck where TM writes SLB worked on Shreya's bengali diction! Like he taught her that? Dude, Shreya is bengali!!!!
And her hindi diction is perfect too!

He isn’t the only one, YAsh Chopra refused to pay Akshay Kumar for DTPH because AK was having a lot of flops around that time, and YAsh Chopra told him when he asked for his remuneration, that being in a YRF movie itself was a reward and he who is down in the market should not ask for money. AK didn’t work for YRF again until Tashan.
Bollywood is the most unprofessional place in the world by god. In Hollywood writers get paid more than actors (not the top A list) and here some writers don’t even get paid.
And if people put their foot down (like Alka did) media winds up putting the blame on the professional instead of the unprofessional!!! 👎🏼

Please don’t mind me saying, I will actually applaud her for this. The fact is that her art or her medium of earning is her singing. Bollywood singers only have limited performance rights, their way to make money is only through singing songs in concerts. It’s not like they are paid as much as music composers or as actors, The shelf life is limited, how will they earn money?
i feel it’s time for us to move on from making “do it for free” as a mahaan kaam. Kaam hai bhai, mazduri hai, majburi nahi. It’s different if she was in a party with friends and refused to sing, but this was a radio station which would make lots of money if she sang becos people will tune in and none of that would go to her.

I agree with you about free singing. But this was unlike that. It was just two lines of the song that too at the end of the program. And she was on the Radio station to promote her Concert.

yes prima facie, it seems like nothing. But it takes just two lines for the radio to have enough to cash on. For example they could include it in a jingle and she would never benefit from it. This is how it works, everyone wants a free lunch.
Separate but related in a way - My friend is a photographer and you don’t know how many times she has been asked by other friends to do their shaadi for free. That’s her earning, not a hobby.
Btw it’s very very likely that Alka had already told the radio station that she will not sing (off radio) and the guy pulls a fast one on her and asks her on air, thinking she will not refuse. Because usually pre interview discuss kiya jaata hai ki kya bolna hai etc.
