Long review ahead. I watched the film two days ago and took this time to formulate my feelings into writing.
I will start off by saying this:
Aanand L Rai’s Raanjhanaa is one of my favourite Bollywood films of all time. I have feelings about the music and themes of that film that could probably fill pages for an entire novel, but I am just not articulate enough for that😒. Having said that, when I saw ALR was once again collaborating with AR Rahman and Dhanush for Atrangi Re, I honestly didn’t know where to set my expectations. Zero left me underwhelmed and I am not that gaga over the TWM series, although they are enjoyable. Also, had not really enjoyed any ARR album in a long time,....probably not since Tamasha in 2015. 😔
After having seen Atrangi Re, I am very happy to report that it did manage to recreate a large part of that Raanjhanaa magic for me ⭐️😳. The emotional beats of this film hit so HARD, that I was completely ready to ignore its flaws and emotionally invest in the characters. While it doesnt top Raanjhanaa for me, I definitely think this will be one of those films that would stay with me for a very long time.❤️
Yes, Rinku and Vishu falling in love may seem premature, but how good a job does Dhanush do in selling us the romance in that one scene where Vishu is confessing his feelings to Rinku in Tamil?? That intensity, uff! You also have to take into account the screenplay, that depicts Rinku and Vishu connecting with each other without showing them interacting directly. Take Rait Zara Si for example. In it Vishu doesn't make a SINGLE eye contact with Rinku, who is just shown everywhere in his vicinity going about her usual way. But it doesn't take much for us to understand that the song literally is a depiction of Vishu's emotional state where he has fallen in love with this girl who has consumed his thoughts and is now roaming rent free in his head whether he likes it or not 😆. The montage where Rinku enters Vishu's room for the first time is another one. She just takes in her surroundings, scanning through Vishu's belongings: the trophies collected over years of hardwork, the neatly stacked linens in his closet- a testament to his disciplined living, his old photo- a glimpse into his humble roots. It is oddly intimate. By the time Vishu returns to his room in the evening to find Rinku sitting on the floor wearing his dhoti kurta, Rinku has already gotten to know Vishu at a deeper level, just by spending a quiet day in his room, all by herself. Its all brilliant and poetic and I love it 😳⭐️
Sara and Akki are also so good together in both versions of their chemistry. As Rinku and Sajjad they were so endearing. And Akki's gummy grin which has grated on our nerves in so many of his comedies is heartwarming and magical here! I especially loved when he flashes it at Rinku when she is like "70 rupay ka chowmein khaye" and he says "Main bhi yehi soch raha tha😃😃"...Its like with Sajjad, Rinku feels like a kid at Disneyland and he is the doting guardian who fulfills all of her crazy whims, buys her all the treats from the candystall and takes her on all the rides.😆 The makers did a brilliant job in styling Sara and Akki in the portions where they are playing the mom and dad. They manage to de-age Akki by a good 15 years, and make Sara look more mature and elegant in those sarees and salwar kameez. How STUNNING is Tere Rang?? Its stuff of romance, drama and theatrics that I LOVE seeing in Bollywood films. (Also ALR has a thing of the guy/girl applying purple colour on their lover's face. Happened in Raanjhanaa, happened in Zero and happens here too!!).
The trio, when they interact together in Little Little are also awfully cute together!! 😆 I loved the back and forth Rinku does between Sajjad and Vishu (she looks darn cute in that woolly cap on her head here!), the dance off between Vishu and Sajjad and the spontaneous kiss on the cheek that Rinku gives to Vishu in the end of it!
I would also like to commend ALR's casting choice of Sara in the film. Its the same way I feel about Sonam in Raanjhanaa. Both Sara and Sonam are limited actresses but their roles in their respective films were so THEM. Yes, Sara struggles with the emotional scenes towards the end of the film, but I wouldn't take any other actress for this role even if they acted better. The obnoxiousness, the spontaneity, the vulnerability that Rinku has was totally Sara, and ALR absolutely knew what he was doing when he cast her for this role.
And all these great screen moments really come from the creative partnership between the filmmaking and musical teams of the film. Like, I dont know who to praise first. Should I say ALR knows how to use ARR's music?? Or should I say ARR and Irshad Kamil know how to compose for ALR's love stories?? Because in their collaborations music and storytelling work so synergistically its hard to differentiate one from the other. Great stuff really, and an example of how magical and riveting filmy music combined with storytelling can be if the makers have their heart in the right place and understand each other's vision.❤️
PS- yeah yeah the film is ridiculous and the handling of serious issues like mental health is WILDLY inappropriate in places, but I wont obsess over it on this post.😆
alr understands this so well and credits the musician and writers first in the credits, arr film, irshad kamil film etc

I was expecting a sad ending like ranjhaana, either rinku lights herself in fire or keeps running past Vishnu having forgotten him

I loved the happy ending… I couldn’t take any more movie where Dhanush dosent get his love… Raanjhna’s ending was very painful to watch for me. 😢😢😢

She had given many indications..
Most of all she had not escaped from Vishu even a single time..stuck with him throughout they left her hometown..even went to Chennai for his engagement. Sajjad returned quite a few times but she didn't leave with him...did not leave Vishu.
No, I didn't want a sad ending .
Yeah n maybe after the auto's convo, he got the clarification of her feelings.

I loved the court scene where she ran away instead of signing the divorce papers.
Loved the movie.
One thing seemed rushed is Vishnu falling for Rinku.
Decided to give the movie a chance due to the surprisingly positive reviews here but was disappointed. There were so many things about the movie which were so jarring. *Spoilers ahead *
Dhanush happily marrying her fiance in one scene with sara dancing all around and in the very next scene he is suddenly in love with Sara? Then the depiction of whole mental condition of Sara was so atrocious. Dhanush witnessing Saras condition and seeing her talking to empty space and breaking into a extended joyful dance coz his competition is not real😐. Why do directors pick such sensitive issues when they do not have the caliber to deal with it... Bringing in such issues just to treat it like comedy for most part. I stopped watching when imaginary AK brings imaginary ghost to the hospital ward.
