TBH he even failed to do significant work in international cinema. Irrfan, Gulshan Grover, Anupam Kher, Tabu, Amrish Puri have done more well known international work than Naseer whose most well known work internationally is only Monsoon wedding.

If he disses Bollywood so much, WTH did he manage to do in international or cross over cinema and theatre? He is no Satyajit Ray. At least when Ray bashed desi films he still managed to make a mark abroad and won Oscar. What has Naseer done except blaming everyone?

Naseeruddin Shah is a phenomenal actor; one of the best to come out of India. However he has become so bitter over the years.

It started off with him constantly harping on about Amitabh Bachchan being a crap actor. Full disclosure, I don't like Amitabh Bachchan at all, and have always ranked the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, even Raj Babar, above him. He's an alright actor, however even I (with my immense dislike of him) can acknowledge his cultural impact is huge.

Then I watched an interview in which he was whining about Ben Kingsley getting the Gandhi role over him, and commenting on how a white man shouldn't be playing Gahndi. He completely overlooked the fact that Ben Kingsley is in fact mixed race (his real name is Krishna Pandit Bhanji). That aside, complaining you didn't get a role 20 years after the film came out is just so pathetic especially for an actor of his stature. It just reeks of sour grapes.

He then said Rajesh Khanna was universally responsible for 'mediocrity' in Indian cinema in the 70s. Because of course, this man single handedly decided what type of content was allowed to be produced and distributed. The prevalence of mediocrity in Indian cinema couldn't possibly be down to the Indian audience preferring formulaic feel-good, escapist cinema to the output of 'parallel cinema'.

And now, not even a month after Dilip Kumar passed away, he is saying he (Dilip) didn't 'do enough', and 'left behind no significant lessons for future actors'. I mean... really? Who makes comments like this shortly after someone passes away? And if this is the approach he's going to take, what has he done for 'cinema' beyond acting in some good films? What new talent has he introduced and 'groomed', what 'lessons' has he left behind? I don't recall him delivering masterclasses in acting. In his entire career he has directed one film, which was firmly rooted in parallel cinema and did not do well commercially. How is this helping improve the mainstream output of Indian cinema?

He's become so disappointing with age.

Nasseer is bringing to our attention some very important points and I am here for it.

I utterly dislike Amitabh in real life but anyone calling him a bad actor or mocking his films needs to get their head checked. Look at his acting in Trishul, Deewar, Zanjeer, Aakhree Raasta, Kaala Patthar, Alaap, Mili, Abhimaan, Don, Sholay, Agneepath, versatility in Amar Akbar Anthony, Chupke Chupke, Naseeb, where he has done action, comedy, romance in same film then talk. His work in Black, Paa, Pink, Baghban comes later.

Most people with heavy baritone cannot handle their dialogues. Amitabh worked hard on voice modulation and speaks differently depending on emotion required in scenes. Contrast it to Kabir Bedi who has baritone but does not know how to use it or tone it down in comedy or emotional scenes. Only Amitabh could have managed that comical, foolish looking cop in Shahenshah who is also same person who becomes a vigilante by night and changes his voice, speech, mannerisms as well. No other actor could have pulled off that otherwise unbelievable script.

Look at Amitabh's subtle comedy as Jai in Sholay and controlled expression of attraction towards Jaya's character in Sholay. He has been good in romantic scenes in Kabhi Kabhi, Silsila, Muqaddar ka Sikandar as well.

His greatest cause of success is his choice of films in which he mostly played common working class man and brought up issues of oppressed urban poor and oppressed classes in villages, disenfranchised sections such as orphans.

People do not know the impact his films like Khuda Gawah, Parvarish, Kalia, Deewaar, Coolie, Suhaag, Laawaris, Naseeb, Don, Namak Halal had among masses and how he stole thunder from Rajesh Khanna in Namak Haraam.

At a time when cinema was mostly about playing rich man or villager or landlord, Amitabh played waiter, porter, coolie, miner, factory worker etc. His characters taking law into their own hands or beating crap out of oppressors were seen as inspiring.

His characters always had iconoclastic streak and sense of doing anything for self respect, justice or avenge injustice. I have seen Baghban in theatre and I saw how elderly viewers loved it and senior citizens who had come to watch it from an old age home, clapped and jumped out of their seats when Amitabh gave that speech in award acceptance scene in that film.

Amitabh films gave people fantasies of taking a stand for themselves and taking no shit. Every film of his used to have message of communal harmony and friendship/solidarity beyond caste, religion, class and showed how sometimes ones who take to crime or aggression, have a reason behind it and are compelled to take that route.

His impact on audience is hypnotic. I have seen craze even KBC inspired when it first went on air in 2000 and even kids and teachers at schools copied his style of speaking.

His personality suited all those roles. Even his less known films like Manzil have message of problems youth encounter when they wish to be first generation entrepreneurs.

There is a reason why Rajesh Khanna, who was at peak himself, said Amitabh will overtake him, when he saw rushes of Amitabh's scenes in Anand and Namak Haraam and said this was the next superstar to watch out for and a competitor to take seriously.

Amitabh overshadowed every star he worked with.

Shatrughan Sinha also admitted once saying Amitabh is Amitabh, always envied as no one can match him.

Masses felt his films were cathartic and reflected their angst. The mania inspired by him was natural. He is the only star whose hospitalization post Coolie accident became a national issue. The crowds outside his house, hospital and prayers for him were not by paid crowds or PR but real public outpouring. He has temples dedicated to him where he is worshipped like a deity.

Of course a man whose rivals went into depression or took sanyas and fled to ashrams after being consistently overshadowed by him, will be a thorn in eye for frustus like Naseeruddin Shah who is nothing but an art film actor of 80s or a sleazy villain in 90s films like Mohra.

Amitabh is the greatest of them all and naturally hated by frustrated rivals from past and present and their equally frustrated fand who know no one can match that number of iconic films, hits, hit TV show and that kind of longevity and success even post 60. He won greatest star and actor of the millennium polls when no one had internet in India. That is his power.

Salim and Javed said Amitabh is a once in a lifetime phenomenon. He is an era in himself.

Other stars like Rajinikanth, SRK, Hrithik, Chiranjeevi, Anil either tried to remake his films or attempted to copy him or model their career after him. Half of Rajini's hits in 70s and 80s are Amitabh remakes.

Naseer is a footnote while Amitabh has many books on him and has more milestones to achieve which other actors can only dream of.

Meanwhile his voice is being demanded by Amazon too for Alexa in India. Bwahaha. Even his voice has more takers than films of Naseer and many other actors. Sour grapes are a given.

The more successful, long lasting, influential icon you are, the more haters and jealousy you will get from losers who can never match up to your level. Naseer is a mosquito in front of a giant like Amitabh.

Rajinikanth once called Amitabh the emperor and said he could never match Amitabh's level and was a small 'king' in front of shehanshah Amitabh. Amitabh had fans in Egypt, Israel, Russia, whole of South Asia, sold out stage shows at Wembley, is first star to have concerts in his name - all this in 70s and 80s when there was no media, no PR, no globalisation.

Media had banned him in 1970s because his family supported Emergency. They did not give him any coverage nor published his name or pics. He gave his biggest hits even despite media ban because he never needed media at all.

His name became benchmark of success and even stardom of women was judged on whether they were Lady Amitabh and regional stars were called Amitabh of South.

Lulz. Even SRK said he had been inspired by Amitabh, wanted to stand like him etc. Aamir called Amitabh the best actor and greatest star ever.

Old or new, or contemporaries they know what Amitabh Bachchan is. Oh and even at his lowest Amitabh never had to wear dhoti and cowboy hat like auteur Naseeruddin Shah or use dialogues like 'suhaag raat mein toh deewarein toot ti hain, palang toot te hain' like legend Shah did in Tahalka.

LMAO! Amitabh is acting great and anyday more versatile than Naseer.

Comedy, action, romance, drama he has done it all.

He has done Mili, Alaap, Main Azaad Hun, Anand, Namak Haraam, Abhimaan, Shakti when he was young. Who says he did different roles only in old age?

Kuch bhi?

Amitabh won BBC greatest actor of the millennium poll. Naseer was nowhere on that list. Cope.
