25 years ago, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a set designer and assistant director for Vidhu Vinod Chopra, came to Salman Khan. Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted to direct a movie about a deaf-mute couple and their complex relationship with their daughter. But no one was willing to give time to a set designer who had dreams of becoming a director but no experience or resources to direct a movie.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali needed a star who could draw audience to the theater. Salman not only worked in Khamoshi for free but he also asked his step-mom Helen to do a role in the movie to help his friend.
Khamoshi released in 1996 and it was critically acclaimed and did well at the box office. However, no commercial star wanted to work with a one-movie director (that too an art movie) and Bhansali was out of work until 1999. That's when Salman again helped his friend make Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and supported his friend Bhansali to come out of the bad phase.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is a remake of Woh 7 Din, a 1983 movie starring Anil Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure, and Naseeruddin Shah. HDDCS was initially offered to Kareena and then Kajol (who was newly married to Ajay Devgn) but it went to Aishwarya Rai, who was Salman's girlfriend at that time. It was Salman who asked Sanjay to cast Aishwarya as Nandini opposite him.
22 years ago Salman helped his friend Sanjay Leela Bhansali make HDDCS. The movie changed Bhansali's career and Bhansali has always mentioned that Salman stood by him when no one in the industry did.
To celebrate the movie's 22 years, Salman tweeted a picture of him and Bhansali from the set of HDDCS. Salman only mentioned Ajay Devgn and Bhansali and ignored the film's heroine and even cropped her from the picture.
Love the way he ignored a certain woman's existence as if she was not a part of the movie. She must have cried buckets because she won't be getting the 2 mins of fame she would have gotten if Salman had tagged her. But she quickly copied Salman and created an Instagram post for her "dear Sanjay".
Enjoy these pictures of two friends from the set of HDDCS.
