Kajol was supporting character but she was given best actress just because she is a friend of Karan Johar.
Kajol has so many undeserved. awards 😳😳

Neither Rani nor Preity, Aishwarya delivered a knockout performance in Raincoat and none of the performances that year could come close to that.
But then it was the year after she was boycotted by the industry bigwigs, so nobody was going to touch her with a ten foot barge pole.
Well let's not forget she was supposed to get a ton of awards for Raincoat and then last minute switches due to pressure by the biggies. So I stopped thinking awards really meant anything. It all comes down to the studio heads and sponsors.

Which pressure from biggies ?? 😆
Rani's role and performance were not award worthy. She didn't deserve the award. Preity should have taken it.
Popular awards aren't given based on performance but on popularity. Rani was the most popular actress that year so she won it. Realistically she didn't deserve it, but I have given good reasons for her win.
Btw I don't think Preity was that good either. Kareena (Dev/Chameli), Ash (Raincoat) and Shilpa (Phir Milenge) were all better than them.

Raincoat was such a good movie

I remember Aishwarya was close to winning the national award in 2005 for Raincoat but there was some “last minute” changes and they gave it to some regional actor.
I remember vividly because some articles even came out saying Ash won and then were retracted #BeingHuman
