Meh. There are lots of deserving movies that get ignored every year. Parasite somehow ended up going viral this year and the Oscars also needed to prove that they're not just a local awards show. It was a fluke in a way and one that helps Oscars gain more attention worldwide and increase their own name and fame. Now other countries will also think they have a chance and the desire for an Oscar will be even stronger. But it won't happen again for the next 30 years.

This was Oscars building their brand and succeeding. It was a much more minor thing but they did the same last year when they put people like Sridevi in their In Memoriam section. It's no work on their part and suddenly the Oscars become more heard of in a nation of a billion.

They will be back to their Oscars So White stuff next year. They are definitely NOT going to make it a habit to nominate foreign films in the main sections because ultimately it's a Hollywood awards show to promote their own industry. Nobody reduces themselves to promote others because it becomes harmful after a point.

True. Irony is that Parasite isnt even Bong's best lol. This entire thing this year was also because of last year's Roma debacle. It shook up things in a way. Certainly won't happen again in a long time.

That's how it goes. AR Rahman got an Oscar for Jai Ho which isn't even very good. His best is Chaiya Chaiya by far but he has many other great songs too. Even if he never got an Oscar, it doesn't take away from him being one of the most brilliant music composers in the world.

Bong Joon Ho was right when he called the Oscars a local awards show. It is. It's always nice to get an award but people also need to stop thinking of American validation as the end all and be all.

The Foreign Film category is the most pathetic of all because there is a very strict criteria of what they like - poverty, war, disease, etc. It doesn't help the movies get any wide theatrical release either. Nobody remember which film was nominated or which one won and most people will not see any of them. It's just so people can brag back in their own country that the white people awarded them.

Popular films' reward is their box office. Awards are for small films nobody sees. Their viewership increases after their nominations because people want to see why they were picked. It helps smaller films earn money or else nobody will make anything other than superhero and action movies. Nobody would have watched movies like Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit if they were not nominated. (Both highly overrated though)

Yeah, every year they hit an all time low! 😂 Average people don't give AF. I like movies a lot and I turned off the Oscars halfway; it was so boring. Most people haven't seen any of these films either so people are not interested.

I wish people from other countries understand this too and stop craving for Oscars. It's so sad that foreigners are desperate for white people to pat them on the back.

While I get the American Validation thing, it's more than that. An Oscar opens up a door of mainstream doors for filmmakers. It has the reach like no other awards. Be it elite sponsors, production houses, publicists- even the possibility of a Acad nom raises the profile of the POC in the west. The entire grind of lobbying for the movie has been called worth it by many considering the national and international firm circles that notice them. In the end,if not anything you get financial backing for your next. They say Cannes is for the film appreciating audience while Oscars is to make a film mainstream.

Infact just nominating Parasite for best picture was unprecented since suddenly a lot of people who wouldn't bother with the foreign language movies gave it a chance. And not just Americans. People everywhere. That's the traction a good movie needs.

Whenever inherently white spaces are taken up by 'others' shock is the first thing and then self preservation. No doubt Oscars will self preserve.

That's only valid for very small filmmakers and people dabbling in indie films. For countries with big movie watching audiences like India and China, it really does not matter. The top production houses don't struggle for financing - nowadays Chinese companies are funding half the films in Hollywood. Indian companies like Reliance are funding Dreamworks and others. They don't need American funding.

Parasite is a fluke because it was nominated in the main categories. But the Foreign Film category does nothing. No mainstream American audience watches those movies or even remembers their names. Perhaps people who made those films are able to create some connections with people in Hollywood but I haven't seen anything much come from it. It just gives them bragging rights in their home country.

White people who make indies that get nominated in main categories of course benefit a lot but it's their home ground. For them Oscars should be a big deal but not for foreigners.

True people of Bollywood are too desperate for Oscars.
