I met him a long time ago when I was covering movies. He was also a friend, and of course somebody one covers as a journalist. Shashi Kapoor was actually more passionate about theatre, unlike his brothers. Theatre was his first love. He was very different and part of the difference was because of his wife Jennifer. He was very much Kapoor with khaan peena and the Kapoor looks but he also had the other side because of his wife. He also had an interest in other kinds of films, because people forget that he had also produced films.
He used to live in the other side of town, Malabar Hill side, so he had friends in South Bombay. He wasn't that Juhu person. He had a different kind of life, where he went swimming in Breach Candy and did theatre, so he was different from the other brothers. He was also quite a big star in the late 60s and 70s, because of his looks as well.
He would be most remembered for The Householder (1963) and Shakespeare Wallah (1965). Those are his international films. As well as Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), which was praised a lot by the Western critics. He would also be remebered for all the films in the 60s and 70s where he played the romantic hero with Sharmila Tagore, or movies like Sharmeelee (1971) or Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965). He will be remembered as the beautiful, sensative actor we all fell in love with. I don't think he was given good roles in Hindi cinema because he happened to be too good looking. I think he missed out there
Grew up watching this actor who inspired so many emotions. May he rest in peace. #ShashiKapoorji you will be missed.
Arguably the most beautiful actor in our cinema... The classy and restrained star for the ages... R. I. P. #ShashiKapoor It is the end of an era. Safe travels sir.
RIP Shashi Kapoor ji Great artistes not only inspire but also inseminate the hearts & minds of the next generation. In individual ways we all carry his greatness within us. He & his talent shall live on. And we shall forever celebrate it. Thank you for your inspiration...

Veteran Bollywood actor and producer Shashi Kapoor has died aged 79.
Kapoor, who acted in huge hits like Deewar and Kabhie Kabhie, had been ill for some time and was in hospital.
He was a member of the Kapoor dynasty, which has dominated the Hindi film industry for decades.
He won several national film awards and was awarded the Padma Bhushan civilian honour by the Indian government in 2011. He also acted in a number of British and American films.
Kapoor died at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in the western city of Mumbai.
"Yes he has passed away. He had kidney problem since several years. He was on dialysis for several years," his nephew, actor Randhir Kapoor, told Press Trust of India. The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, he said.
The actor was married to late English actress Jennifer Kendal, with whom he set up Mumbai's iconic Prithvi Theatre in 1978. His sister-in-law is British actress Felicity Kendal.
Kapoor began his career as a child actor and appeared in more than 150 films, including a dozen in English. He became known internationally for his roles in Merchant Ivory productions like "Shakespeare-wallah" and "Heat and Dust".
In 2015, he was given the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in Indian cinema.
Kapoor was known for his charming smile and was often described by his fans as the "handsomest star ever". He had a huge fan following among women.
He was cast alongside superstar Amitabh Bachchan in some of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters of the 1970s and 1980s, and the two actors played brothers, best friends or rivals.
His comment in Deewar - "Mere paas maa hai" (But I have mother's support) - during a tense confrontation with screen-sibling Bachchan tops the list of best Bollywood lines for millions of fans around the globe.
Over the years, it has found its way on to merchandise like shoulder bags, coffee mugs and cushion covers.
