Simi Garewal turns 70 this year (her birthday is on 17th October 2017), so I thought it would be interesting to post some of the best episodes of her shows Rendezvous with Simi Garewal and Simi Selects India's Most Desirable (and of course, scenes/songs from her films).
I always found Simi's interviewing style probing yet respectful, and she used to get stars to talk a lot more about their lives than other chat show hosts have been able to.

Posting a song of hers with Dev Anand from the film Teen Deviyan 😊

I recently rewatched the Rendezvous episode in which Simi interviewed Dev Anand. He was frank as always and answered every question without beating around the bush.

Another good episode- the Imran Khan interview. She got him to talk about his past fairly openly here. Her questions are quite personal but her style is pretty gentle, so people end up saying a lot more than they usually do in interviews.

My first break - Simi Garewal
JUNE 16, 2011 16:48 IST
How it happened

Having spent my childhood and teenage in London, it gave me a western orientation of mind.Never in my wildest of dreams did I imagine of being an actress. Yet, destiny had for me the fact that I would be facing the arc lights andputtinggrease paint on my face. As far as I can recollect, I made my debut with Tarzan Goes To India', a fantasy-oriented English film opposite the dashing and handsome Feroz Khan. I was Princess Kamara in the film and frankly speaking there was really not much of scope to display any histrionic ability in the film. There were a number of love scenes with Feroz in Tarzan Goes To India' but nothing worth mentionable.

How did it feel

At the age of 15, I did not know anything about the art of performing in front of the camera. Would I truly be able to make it as an actress? I had grave doubt initially. My accent was anglicised and not suited to the typical Hindi films that were made in the 60s. With a mind full of determination, hard labour and a long wait I did manage to prove my talent.

How life changed

I was first able to prove my acting prowess in Raj Khosla's Do Badan', an emotional saga of love and sacrifice. Though the film centred around Manoj Kumar, Asha Parekh and Pran, Raj Khosla gave me ample scope to perform as Dr. Anjali the eye specialist in Do Badan'. I still fondly remember how he picturised a close-up of mine during the song sequence, Naseeb Mein Jiske' and immediately after the song my emotional reaction as Manoj Kumar is slapped by Pran. Subdued emotions were required in the shot and I poured my heart into it. Raj Khosla and Manoj Kumar brought out the real me on screen for the first time.

My next memorable film was Teen Deviyan', a modern and mature love saga far ahead of its times. My co-stars were Nanda and Kalpana. Our hero was the evergreen, debonair Dev Anand. The entire atmosphere on the sets of Teen Deviyan' was very disciplined and it was a real experience performing romantic scenes with Dev Anand who excelled in them. In one scene where after a few bouts of drinking Dev has an emotional altercation with me and he excelled in the scene just as he expressed all his romance simply through his eyes in the song sequence, Kitni Sardi'.

I received a major character in Raj Kapoor's Mera Naam Joker', which gave me a strong footing as an actress and have been very fortunate to work with the likes of Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen in Aranyer Din Ratri' and Padatik', two of my truly memorable films.

Best work moment

In Rendezvous, when you get so lost in an interview that you enter another 'zone'. And recently, when I learnt that my website, simigarewal.com, which I personally wrote and designed and which carries my work and life within its pages, crossed 13 million hits in 16 months. Now I communicate with millions. So rewarding!

Books on your bedside

The Accidental Prime Minister, The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri

Massage or workout to de-stress

Workout followed by video games, video games and video games till I am too tired to stress.

Designs that have caught your eye recently

The ones worn by Deepika Padukone. Stunning!

Favourite spirit

A 'free' spirit, as in soul, needing no artificial intoxication

Favourite wine

I don't drink wine, but if it's mandatory then Blue Nun

Your sleeping ritual

I am a night owl! I prefer going to sleep at sunrise. I do my best work in the quiet of the night - write my scripts, research, solve amazing puzzles with ease. My brain peaks when the world is in slumber.

Favourite TV show

Suits. Am so in love with Harvey Specter

Best gift received

The intangible one - a letter, a photograph, a verse, a memory

Best gift given

When my sister Amrita's beloved pet dog Diva died, I gifted her an adorable chihuahua. The joy she brings multiplies each day.

Favourite cuisine

A variety it has to be - ranging from Thai, Italian, French, fusion

Newspapers, TV channels and websites you prefer

Times Of India, The Indian Express and The Economic Times are a morning must. I also subscribe to The Guardian and The Economist. I watch all the English news channels. For leisure, Fox Traveller and HBO HD. Websites: YouTube

What food items do you like to shop for?

My suitcases are like a mini gourmet supermarket - from bergamot to cheeses, from spices to sea food. So organised am I, I even carry a portable freezer box.

On a plane, do you prefer to network, sleep or catch up on films and reading?

Films, film and films - right up to the time they switch off the transmission

Fancy coffee or masala tea?

Coffee - a blend of Colombian with Rossa - and black lemon tea with Splenda. I even carry my own RealLemon concentrate in a squeezy.

What do you cook on your day off?

I COOK! From soups, Thai cuisine to fancy desserts, cakes, souffles and chocolate truffles to fresh homemade pasta and ciabatta bread. Not taking orders yet!

Your favourite city

In this magnificent world, just one favourite? Okay - I love Vegas. It takes me to another zone.

You get your work clothes from

In front of the camera: Shahab, Armani and Anamika. Behind the camera: usually comfy cargos and track-suites from Nike or Reebok.

The shoemaker you trust your sole with?

I am miffed with most of them right now. Their heels are way too high.

The gels and oils and lotions you swear by

I'm allergic to most products. Presently Les Naturelles and Kiehls work for me. BioMedics Facial Cleansing gel I cannot live without.

Your favourite evening wear

I feel dressy in my Shahabs, be it long skirts or jackets. White of course!

What's your weekday breakfast like? And weekend?

Lemon tea followed by almond honey flakes with fresh homemade almond milk and seasonal fruit.

God for you is...

Nature. In all its glory. Bountiful. Devastating. Awesome.

Your workout regime

First the treadmill to warm up, then the exercise ball, then pilates. One hour daily.

Your ideal dance music

Depends who I'm dancing with! On my own I dance to all the rocking numbers - Bollywood stuff also gets me out of my chair.

At parties do you like to talk turkey or make PC?

Parties are to socialise! Chat, joke, have fun. But when there are film people around - it always veers to goss and turkey!

A few of your goddesses are

Maharani Gayatri Devi for classic elegance; Aishwarya Rai's inner and outer beauty; Nita Ambani's drive... and yes, wealth!

Alpha males you know

An alpha male is usually a leader who inspires and is, without intention, the centre of attention. He has integrity, is learned, charismatic, and mysterious, among other qualities. So, Ratan Tata and Shah Rukh.

Your favourite motto

Don't take yourself too seriously. No one else does.

She was the best but wonder why the interviews stopped. I guess everyone was clamouring to be on her show at that time from Pakistan politicians to the high flyers of India like the Tatas and Birlas and musicians and all. Today it's all just BW BW BW.

This woman doesn't age!😲 Can't believe she is only 5 years younger than Amitabh.

One of my fav talk show hosts for sure. Her sincerity and warmth touches your heart.

I actually used to love love her show & wait eagerly for Sunday night! She has a wide range & was utterly glamorous. I was so taken in by how articulate & classy she was on the telly! Still is. Her Indians Most Desirable didn't measure up even half-way. Just last week I watched her RWSG. :) A lot of people believe she & her show had a stick-up-her-arse but I loved her & her show. She was always so respectful,
Warm & intuitively intelligent with her guests--- Class.
