Salman Khan has been enjoying a golden run since Wanted. There was an aberration in between in the form of Veer and Jai Ho, but post that, his movies have only set the cash registers ringing. It's as if his fans were suddenly struck by this newfound fascination for their superstar. They made all his film super-duper hits and then came 2017 when, the momentous Eid release Tubelight crashed. A film that was touted to earn more than Rs 300 crore, struggled to even enter the Rs 100 crore club, which was a cakewalk for Salman Khan films. So now, if Salman doesn't work at the box office, what does? That's exactly our question and that has also made us wonder if Aamir Khan, Rajinikanth and Shah Rukh Khan should be a little wary about their upcoming movies.
Tubelight is made on a budget of nearly Rs 100 crore and more. Given the fact that it had Salman Khan in it, the budget is definitely constrained. So it was expected to earn rich dividends because it was an Eid release. But guess the makers underestimated his fans because the film tanked badly. Patchy reports suggest the film has only managed earning Rs 117 crore at the box office. Yes, the film has made Rs 227 crore in terms of satellite, theatrical and music rights apparently but box office earning is the benchmark to call a film a hit or flop. But despite every factor working in its favour (Salman Khan + Eid), the film failed to make much impact. Salman will obviously redeem himself this December with Tiger Zinda Hai but the failure of Tubelight has put a question mark on what happens to movies with experimental premises. Mind you, Salman played a slow learner in the film and it was devoid of anything that the actor is popular for. Soon, there will be Thugs of Hindostan next Diwali where a huge setup of ships has been constructed as it is a pirate story. Obviously, it will be a big-budget film and many even feel, it will be the most expensive YRF film ever. The shoot is going on with Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Fatima Sana Shaikh in Malta. If the premise fails to excite the audience, the film may not make a mark because films on pirate or dacoits don't get made in Bollywood anymore. It's a stale idea.
Then there is Shah Rukh Khan's dwarf drama with Aanand L Rai. How much the audience will accept him as a vertically challenged guy remains to be seen because his Fan turn was badly slammed by his own fans.
Even Rajinikanth's 2.0 will be thus eyed with great trepidation despite having a better buzz around it than Tubelight. The latter's failure has obviously made people cautious of big-budget star-laced films as well. So will they rise up to the occasion...only time will tell!
