If I am not wrong, sexual assault & murder, together, if, they occur, it is considered for the capital punishment, & I believe there was a case in West Bengal, I don't remember, where a man has been given convicted & given capital punishment! I can't seem to recall the name!
There are laws, quite a lot of them! The problem lies with the lack of proper execution of those laws! And, of course, the society & its general outlook form the biggest obstacles in this!
Ok, yes, the man who was executed was Dhananjoy Chatterjee. So, basically, there are actual laws in place.
And, Death penalty is an unrealistic approach because that is awarded only in what the court considers 'the rarest of rare cases', but seeking maximum punishment, whether life imprisonment which is more easily awarded, or whatever the crime demands but with swiftness is necessary! The proceedings should be quick, & the execution of the laws in place!
Even in spite of this, the general attitude of the society is what holds the key to resolving this issue to an extent!

Return-to-Hades put it very eloquently that one of the problems here is lack of respect for women. Understanding that a woman is not am object or property. Do you really think these kind of mentalities would even listen or care if the likes of Deepika or Jaya Bachchan or Priyanka, Kajol spoke up? But when Amitabh Bachchan or Sachin or the others mentioned in this letter speak up it will at the very least make some kind of a dent here. This is not a problem that is going to magically go away overnight. It will probably take another generation or so about only if genuine effort is made to change. In a society where even some politicians dismiss this issue by saying "boys will be boys" it might take the likes if Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin to start changing mind sets. Look at the people she mentions in her letter. In terms of power, influence and popularity in pop culture it doesn't get bigger than those names.

u really think Amitabh ,NaMo and khans can STOP men doing these things?? unless women speak up or take a stand on the issue the problem wont solve imo...even shenaz sister, mother, friends didn't speak up when it happened to them and I bet 90 % of indian women face this problem while traveling in buses and trains in india...but how many r speaking up and raising the issue ?? because of this men are taking women as granted ...so I wish every women should take a stand and raise her voice when it happens to them ..

I still remember when a guy louvered me to his apartment on the pretense of giving me a toy. I still remember the groping, the touching, the kissing, the disgusting odor of my gropper. He lived in the same building as we did. I still think why he singled me out from all of other girls in my age group. I was 7 years old.
I am 34 years old who still cannot forget and I will never forgive. I don't want to kill him. No! That would be too easy. All I want is for him to go through the same thing as I have. I want him to live with that pain. Feel that pain in his soul. That's all I want.

OK I have a better understanding of what you meant now. To answer your first question, I don't think Amitabh Bachchan or others mentioned in her letter can stop men from attacking women. But I think they can be a much bigger influence than their female counterparts, especially with the male youth. Again this problem is not going to go away over night. An entire society or culture's mentality and mind set has to change.

As for women not taking a stand that is such a huge and complicated issue, yet at its core very simple. Women need family, friends and society's support and often times they don't get it. There is such a stigma attached to victims of rape. Shame, feelings of "was it my fault?" "What did I do?" and so forth, and unfortunately patriarchal societies like India or most of Middle East doesn't make it easier on women. To be fair these feelings or fears don't escape victims of rape in America either. Then there is the whole misogynistic belief that a woman's entire value is in her virginity and purity that still exists in a lot of cultures. These cultures unfortunately also consider a girl child a burden. So on top of the "burden" of being female she's also now lost her only value by having been raped and she now may never find a husband and forever be a burden to her father or brothers. So yea she's not going to take a stand because she doesn't want to bring shame to her family. Do you see what a vicious cycle this is? Sometimes a powerful and influential male figure, or any male standing up and looking at the rapist saying you are wrong will go a long way as opposed to all the other women whom the rapist never respected to begin with.

I almost wish that Shenaz addressed her letter to only our PM. Instead of starting the clean India campaign, focus on the laws that will promote a better society. What good is a "clean country" when the country men and women can't feel safe living in it?!

The letter is very sad😔

Women security in our country is only a far distant dream... I live in the capital and Im absolutely petrified of going anywhere alone in the city! Thankfully in metro there is a ladies compartment now. But even there, sometimes men enter thru last door and try to push women! Each day is scary in this city. All times of the day i carry a pepper spray, im afraid of going to Gurgaon, heck even searching for a job there m scared! If u r a working woman in this city, each day is a struggle and u cant do anything about it!

Honestly, I love my country, but sometimes I really hate my city and my country. I want to go away from here to a developed country where there is more security and women dont have to live in the constant fear. I cant even imagine to have a daughter grow up in India...😒
