It is quite interesting that people would want to brush this off as a publicity stunt rather than acknowledge the reality of the situation that this open letter expresses! Even if it were a publicity stunt, which I highly doubt, the content of the letter speaks for itself! There isn't anything in that letter that's demanding anything but some attention towards the burning issues of women safety & protection! Why not focus on that! Her movie release doesn't make these issues any less true!

India had never seen a protest like the one that happened during the Nirbhaya incident but what was the result? Was the accused given a harsh punishment? We have seen so many protests but still there's some problem cropping up every time.Even if we protest for harsher punishment like castration, there will be hindrance by human rights groups and the laws written in the constitution. And even if laws are changed, there is always a fear of power being misused, the very reason even euthanasia is not legal in the country. There are so many angles that one needs to see before changing a law that I honestly feel, we have reached a stage where we are a hopeless nation when it comes to safety of women.
Earlier people would ask girls to stay home to be safe, nowadays even your own house is not safe thanks to creepy tuition teachers and pedophiles.

I have immense respect for women, much more than men but sorry, I don't see any solution to the problem of safety of women. We just have to live the way we are living now.Even a pepper spray cannot guarantee safety in a country like India.

men are important to be targeted coz those who rape are MEN. So to show those MEN that your own gender stands against you for what you are doing is important.

I know and that's what I said that there's a lot of anger from men as well. The only reason why I feel the anger is not getting transformed into something big is because of the hopeless outcome each and every protest has in India.

Are conditions in India really that bad? 😳 I simply cannot even begin to ccomprehend how women are inappropriately touched daily, while the offenders are not held accountable? This makes me sick.

Btw as per wiki , India has avg. of 2 per 100,000 while it is 24 per 100,000 for UK and 28 per 100,000 for US incidents of reported rape..

coz it says "reported" rape
millions of rape cases in india aren't even reported or else it would be A LOT higher

@bold-that should say it all! In India, the truth is, most rapes go unreported! Especially, in the rural areas, not that the situation is much different in the urban areas!

We Indians are one pathetically patient race. There will be agitation for few days after that everything will be forgotten and forgiven until there's another such incident..This is because of our lackluster attitude, there's no one to blame except us..We have suffered for 200 years under British rule..We have slave mentality in our blood and our fate is to suffer nothing else..I know I sound very pessimistic but I'm one today

Return-to-Hades put it very eloquently that one of the problems here is lack of respect for women. Understanding that a woman is not am object or property. Do you really think these kind of mentalities would even listen or care if the likes of Deepika or Jaya Bachchan or Priyanka, Kajol spoke up? But when Amitabh Bachchan or Sachin or the others mentioned in this letter speak up it will at the very least make some kind of a dent here. This is not a problem that is going to magically go away overnight. It will probably take another generation or so about only if genuine effort is made to change. In a society where even some politicians dismiss this issue by saying "boys will be boys" it might take the likes if Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin to start changing mind sets. Look at the people she mentions in her letter. In terms of power, influence and popularity in pop culture it doesn't get bigger than those names.
