There have been speculations about a biopic on Sanjay Dutt, and that Ranbir Kapoor might be the actor to star in it. However, speaking to the media about it for the first time, Ranbir says he and director Rajkumar Hirani are indeed discussing it. Talking about his proximity to Sanjay, he also recounts how the senior actor, too, would have wanted him for the role.
Is it true that you're set to play Sanjay Dutt?
To portray Sanju sir on screen is a big task. And it comes with huge responsibility. He's had a very entertaining, engaging, and a roller-coaster kind of life. We (him and Hirani) have had an informal meeting. But I think Raju sir himself hasn't decided if he wants to do it or not. It will be exciting to work with Raju sir, and to portray Sanjay Dutt on the big screen.
Have you spoken to Sanjay about it?
No. Unfortunately, when we started talking about it, Sanju sir was in jail. So we haven't had a chance to talk. But when I was growing up, Sanju sir would tell me, "If anybody makes a film on my life, I would like you to play [me]." That's always been a big compliment. I love him dearly. So it will be very exciting.
Does it make it special since the Kapoors and Dutts have known each other well?
It's true. I am " and have always been " very close to Sanju sir and [his] family. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that I get this opportunity to bring Sanjay Dutt's life to the silver screen.
Are you excited at the prospect of working with Hirani?
I've always been unlucky when it comes to Raju sir. We've spoken about two-three films in the past, ever since Saawariya (2007) released, but they never worked out. He is the one director with whom every actor in the industry wants to work.
Besides acting and endorsements (Ranbir has been spotted in TV ads as the Hero MotoCorp brand ambassador), your father, Rishi Kapoor, says you also want to direct a film.
Yes, I'm very interested. When I was younger, I always used to say that I want to become a director more than an actor. I think it's a fascinating job. A person can write something, imagine something and bring it on screen.
So, will we see you in the director's chair anytime soon?
You know, the more directors I work with " Imtiaz [Ali], Anurag [Basu], Ayan [Mukerji], Mr Bhansali [Sanjay Leela Bhansali], Shimit [Amin], Anurag [Kashyap]... the more I realise that I'm far from making a film. It's not easy being a director. And I don't think I have anything to say... The day I have something to say, I would love to make a movie.
