Nagesh Kukunoor's portrayal of a nasty pimp in the movie 'Lakshmi' has so convinced the sex workers that they want to bash him up.

At a special screening of Nagesh Kukunoor's "Lakshmi" for sex workers held at the centre of a red-light area here, the filmmaker was accosted by a group of extremely overwrought sex workers who wanted to know who played the nasty pimp in the film.

"Agar woh mil jaye to hum ussey aisa sabak sikhaayenge ki naani yaad aa jayegi (If we find him, we will teach him a lesson to remember)," the workers told Kukunoor after the screening.

The screening was held at the Alankar theatre on Grant Road.

Movie Review: 'Lakshmi' is brutally real and inspiring

Of course when they got to know that the "offender" was none other than Nagesh Kukunoor himself, the sex workers directed their wrath at him, bombarding him with loud expletives and jostling him until he had to be whisked away.

Laughing at the experience, the film's co-producer Elahi Heptoolah said: "It was a screening only for the sex workers of Kamathipura (Mumbai's red-light district). The atmosphere was charged and emotional. The ladies completely empathized with what was being shown on screen.

"They felt it was their own story put up there and the pimp, played by our dear director Nagesh, represented everything that was evil in their lives. They felt a deep hatred for his character. They couldn't recognize Nagesh who stood quietly outside to see them off after the show as the guy played they pimp. When they did, they were very upset."

There are plans to show Kukunoor's film to prostitutes all across India.

"We feel 'Lakshmi' is relevant to sex workers' lives far beyond a film. We want to expose the film in all the red-light areas of the country. But first we're trying to get it released in Alankar cinema on Grant Road, so all the sex workers would be able to watch it," added Heptoolah.

Unfortunately despite of being an amazing movie, it's hardly working at the BO and is a total washout! I hope some miracle happens, and this turns out to be a commercial success too, otherwise this gem will be forgotten 🥱

Unlike say a Queen or Kahaani which is high on content and suddenly turn sleeper hits, it will be very difficult for Lakshmi to break even let alone be a hit. And it's again because of it's content. No matter how hard hitting the film is, I think it is very difficult to get audiences to the theatre to watch such a film. First, the A certification and second the graphic scenes in the movie. Most people are weak hearted. Every single person I have recommended the movie to has either said I am not that strong to watch it or have said I'll wait it but definetely not in the theatre. It's a very disturbing film and to get audiences to like and sit through such a film is very difficult.

But if Nagesh would have edited out these scenes, the whole meaning behind making the film would just vanish. Like Nagesh said in one of his interviews, unless you see what is happening, you will not feel for the character by reading some mere statistics.

I was sure to sit through the movie knowing it would be disturbing. Though I was happy for the fact that there were no graphic sex scenes in the film, the torture is what disturbed me a lot. Monali's character (lakshmi) washing her private parts after every round of torture by her customers and thinking that it actually happened to a real girl and it is a real story...definitely disturbing!

A23-year-old woman has been admitted to the Thane Civil Hospital after her breasts were slashed by three persons, including a woman brothel owner, who were torturing her for three weeks to force her into prostitution.

According to the police, the woman Rashida (name changed) had been brought from her hometown in Gujarat by her cousin Alam on the promise of a job. He, however, sold her to a Bhiwandi brothel owner, Ruby Munshi, for Rs 30,000. When Rashida resisted attempts to force her into prostitution, the two of them along with an accomplice, Afzal, began torturing her.

On Saturday, acting on a tip-off that a girl at the red light area of Hanuman Tekdi was being tortured in the brothel, the Bhiwandi City police raided the place and rescued Rashida who was in a semi-conscious state. Brothel owner Ruby was arrested on the spot, while Alam and Afzal managed to flee.

"Rashida was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi, but as her condition was critical she was referred to the Thane Civil Hospital.

She was being tortured by Ruby, Alam and Afzal for over 10 days, and had cigarette burn marks on her body and a broken tooth. When this did not work, they used a sharp weapon to slash her breasts," said Senior Inspector Namdev Rode of the Bhiwandi City Police Station.

The police have not yet recorded Rashida's statement as she is in a state of shock. Doctors at Thane Civil Hospital said she is out of danger but is traumatised.

"She will have to undergo psychiatric counseling," a doctor said. While the police have launched a manhunt to nab Alam and Afzal, Munshi has been booked under Sections 324 and 325 of the IPC for causing grievous hurt and using dangerous weapons, besides several sections of the Preventio

Isn't it weird? People lap up graphic and extreme BDSM in Fifty Shades because the woman is in love with the guy and pretends to enjoy it. But when you portray the reality that women don't want or enjoy such sex, it is unbearable to even give it a shot.

It is simple isn't. Consent makes all the difference, so BDSM with consent is lapped up because it is made obvious that the two adults have embraced it with a clear mind. Whereas graphic scenes in rape are difficult to watch because someone is being violated without consent.

I have a hard time accepting Fifty Shades as consensual. She doesn't enjoy it or desire it. He coerces her to sign the contract and uses us. IMO Fifty Shades is just glorified rape with a wafer think excuse of love and consent thrown in to justify it. It just makes me wonder - does it become OK when it is suave attractive billionaires manipulating their witless infatuated secretaries into bonded sex slaves? I find both instances of non consensual acts but packaged differently.

I'm not against BDSM or the right of consensual adults. I know that some people can and will enjoy it. My problem is more with how Fifty Shades presents it.

I have to call ignorance here, as the book didn't capture my attention so i don't recollect reading more than the first chapter. There are far better adult fiction books out there.

I can see where you are coming, but at the end of the day in such instances the woman has a right to refuse and say no. They agree to engage in such acts with their sound mind. The things is they have a choice- and they have a right to exercise the choice. Whether they enjoy it or put up with it for the sake of love blah blah is another thing all together.

But when you show brutal rape scenes in movies, you know that the woman doesn't want it, the woman hates it, the woman feels violated and the woman doesn't have a choice. I personally cannot watch any such scenes because to me its my worst nightmare come true. And no one wants to see their worst nightmare on a 70mm screen.
