When Neil Nitin Mukesh was detained at New York airport

The actor's fair complexion made it difficult for the immigration officials to believe that he was an Indian. This happened when Neil Nitin Mukesh flew to the US to shoot the Yashraj film New York .

The film, directed by Kabir Khan and co-starring Katrina Kaif , John Abraham and Irrfan Khan , is about the discrimination people of certain community and religion face in the US after the 9/11 attacks.

Ironically, Neil, who plays a Muslim in the film, saw life imitating art when he was detained at the airport because he looked too fair to be an Indian and that made the officials suspicious.

"I can pass off as a Britisher, American, Kashmiri easily because my skin tone and complexion can blend anywhere. But this incident changed my attitude of how I will approach my role in New York which also dwells upon discrimination," Neil told a news agency.

To convince the immigration officials of his identity, Neil even told them he was an actor from India and they could confirm it by googling his name.

"I told him to google search my name. When he realised his folly, he was still not willing to let me go and started asking questions about my profession like what kind of films I do and why am I in New York," the actor is quoted as saying.

In a way, Neil's detention gave him an insight about his role in the film. The young actor said that while leaving the immigration office, he thanked the official because he had found the crux of what 'New York' is all about.

The film releases this Friday.

talk about being self-obsessed...!!
how does he expect immigration officers to KNOW he is an actor... it's not like he is exactly famous in U.S..... and they are only doing their job...
i bet a lot of terrorists come up with stupid and silly excuses... it is their JOB to investigate... as long as they did not hassle him, what is the fuss about....
Neil obviously does not know a lot about how the world functions...!
no offense... i know people (Muslims) who have to wait sometimes 2 hours or so for the clearance but i have only heard how the officers were so nice about the whole thing and did not hassle people unnecessarily...
what Neil is doing is called publicity... if i was too naive and living back home, i might have believed this but living in U.S., i know this is all bull...!!

i highly doubt they'll approach it 'neutrally'...!! i'm sure there are cases like this here but it certainly makes a bad impression... every place has good and bad....!
it's true there is a lot of racism... however, not everyone can be painted with the same brush stroke...!
and asking questions is not exactly called harassment...!! it's called 'doing their duty'....!

^that's my point sanam, there are many things which US gov't has done in last few years, which i am not pround of . But security wise, there is nothing to complain. After 9/11, it was gov't duty to secure the nation..and to make sure nothing like this happens again. For that, they have a right to question anyone. Not all the countries are used to terriorism...i hate when people question security, it's for our own good. If they question, big deal..if we have nothing to hide, then there should be no problem!

exactly... and there was one guy who was complaining about being held back from travelling and blamed the security... turns out he did not even have valid papers... even then the officials said sorry to him... go figure... what else do they need to do...? 😕
honestly, i hate the desi mentality sometimes... they love to blame but never think about their own faults... just carry your documents with you when you are travelling... and just because someone questions them, they make it a whole issue of ego... so annoying...!!

true..sanam, i have been to airports a lot in last few years and from what i have seen..officials are only doing their duty. They approach u with respect and ask couple of questions and if satisfied, let u go.
wat's so wrong in it?
It's actually indian airports where it is more scary. Everyone is out to get money from u there! They are always out to find a fault so that they can get some bribe, and i am talking with experience. 😔

i know, piya... my husband says the same thing... that he is much more comfortable travelling to U.S. and believe me, we have seen our share of security... but i have never had any problems whatsoever here...
but back home is actually quite scary... you never know what 'unknown' clause they will bring out to get some money out of you.... 😡
and they actually check papers (passports plus boarding passes) at least five times... unlike here, where it's only done twice, i believe... talk about fuss, eh....
