I'm back to Tollywood: Karishma Kotak
By Leena Shri Pampana, TNN | Jan 9, 2013, 11.55 PM ISTHow awkward was it for you to be an inmate in the Bigg Boss house sharing space with your ex Niketan Madhok?
Honestly speaking, Niketan and I dated seven years ago and I think a young girl is entitled to date for some time. We dated for just two months and it was nothing serious. It was a sweet relationship we had, that's it. Had it been a serious relationship then it would have been awkward. There is nothing between us now.
Is the Bigg Boss drama scripted?
Everyone thinks that this show is mostly scripted and fake, but that's not true. I've been on the show for 12 out of the 14 weeks of the show. It is like living in a time capsule. It's a tough place to be in because you are in a confined space for three months. You have no contact with the outside world. No pen, no paper, no cell phone, no watch, no television, nothing at all! As much as I could, I tried to entertain myself. Initially, it was stimulating, but gradually it got too saturated. It was a tough phase, but it was a very interesting experience.
You were raised in London, so what brought you to India?
At the age of 21, I took the decision to leave my family behind in London to live my dream of being an Indian actress. The only person I knew in India was my aunt (dad's sister). I didn't have a filmi background, so I had to start from scratch. Being alone in a new city and not knowing the language was very scary at first. Then I met fashion photographer Atul Kasbekar, who helped me get into the Kingfisher calendar. That helped me big time. It wasn't exactly smooth sailing because I had to be without assignments for a month and then I would have hectic schedules for months together. I got 99% of my jobs through auditions and no one recommended me for any movie.
Tell us about one venture that is close to your heart?
I still recollect the time I spent for my first movie Shankar Dada with Chiranjeevi, directed by Prabhudeva. It was my first movie with such a big star and I had to put in a lot of hard work because I'm a Gujarati, the director speaks Tamil and I have to learn Telugu dialogues! So, yes, that's one venture I cannot forget.
Heard that you have been roped in for a Telugu film...
It's just a couple of weeks since I have been out of Bigg Boss and I got a call for the Vizag Fashion Week for which I am the brand ambassador and the show stopper. Suddenly, work is pouring in from all corners. I've received calls from the Tollywood industry as well. And yes, I'm planning to set foot in Tollywood soon.
