Why Gautum picked Archana?

I seriously didn't get it. Also, the choices of other gang leaders. What were they trying to accomplish?

Gautam likes spending time with Archu and they have a cute bond. I think Gautam realizes that he can't win on the basis of a love story so picking Soundarya was a bad option.
