Chapter 3
Fifteen year old Ajabdeh Punwar felt like she could finally breathe again as she pulled in her dupatta that had gotten stuck at the window and their car moved out of the Mall parking lot. As their car raced through the traffic on the road, Ajabdeh couldn't help but think back on what she had just witnessed.
~~flashback~~
Less than three hours ago, she was at the Dubai mall with her mother Hansa and brother Bal who wanted to visit the new gaming convention. Ajabdeh had excused herself so she could visit the various bookstores. In her excitement of exploring new books, she had quickly assured her mother that she would easily find her way back to them.
As Ajabdeh walked around the mall visiting one bookstore after another, she hadn't realised how and when she had gotten completely lost. One moment, she was surrounded by people and the next she was walking down a hallway which seemed almost empty with unopened shops, and under construction' boards on almost all windows, except for a man walking ahead of her. She felt like she knew that man... he seemed familiar. She thought "if I can get closer, I can call out to him .. may be he can help me!" Just as she thought this, she saw the man enter through a door that was set inside an ornately carved archway. Ajabdeh didn't know how or why she felt that she needed to hide, but hide she did. The conversation she heard a few moments later made her thank her Kaanhaji for the power of intuition.
Hukum Singh: News is not good Sir. Uday Singh is leaving no stone unturned after our last failed attack. He's sure that you must have a bigger plan in mind. As far as I know, their entire network is currently active and on high alert.
Unknown man: No need to worry about his so-called network. You are a part of his network' too, and yet Uday Singh does not suspect a mole in his own network. (Chuckle) We are ready for a any security measures he puts up. No need to look so worried Hukum Singh.
The man laughed at the end of his monologue. As another man joined in his laughter, "SHUT UP Inayat!!" said a man. His voice was low but had authority. The group suddenly went quiet and started to talk in low voices.
Ajabdeh was frozen to her spot behind the door's archway. Suddenly, she heard a sound on the other side of the hallway and through the carvings of archway saw a boy. He seemed to be older than her, and walking towards the door too. She wanted to warn him to be quiet when he sensed her presence. She wanted to raise her hand in a be quiet' motion but he hid himself behind the archway on the other side and went quiet without any signals from her.
They both leaned in to hear the conversation again -
"..You fools!! This is no laughing matter! You are not discussing a game!! The news Hukum Singh has brought us is extremely alarming. The Rajput Intelligence Agency has been poking their nose around us for months. They have foiled so many of our plans. We have had to come so far just to have a meeting because their spy network is so wide-spread. If they have already got their hands on any evidence against us or our plans, we are in deep trouble! We may have to re-plan the whole attack on the Rajput cities!! No matter though... Uday Singh may think he has all the information, but I'm Shums Khan... he will never catch me red-handed. Our next meeting will now happen in Rajputana, India."
Ajabdeh looked up in shock to see the boy's eyes mirroring her feelings. She quickly raised her blue and gold dupatta to cover her face as she heard the men inside preparing to leave. One last time she looked through the carvings to see the boy still standing there. She wanted to plead and scream at him "Go! Run! LEAVE!! Get out of here! Or we will be caught!"
As though reading her mind, the boy had started to move backwards too. Between her constant looking over-the-shoulder, and running, Ajabdeh didn't know how or when she found her mother and brother. Before she could say anything, her mother, who already had a worried expression on her face, said "Good. You are here. Let's leave. Your father just called."
As she now sat in her car, she had a million thoughts running through her head - who were those men? How did they know Mr. Uday Singh? How on earth did they find out about the agency? Why was the name Hukum Singh familiar? She closed her eyes to calm her nerves, and her racing mind and heart. With her head resting against the cool glass of the car window, all Ajabdeh could see were the eyes of the boy - That boy - full of shock and fear - mirroring her own emotions. She didn't know why, but she was strangely, yet absolutely, sure that she would meet that boy again, soon. But first, she needed to talk to Patta.
Chapter 4
The last 24 hours were a blur of activity for Pratap. It had been nearly six hours since they reached Mewar, a bustling metropolitan city in Rajputana, India, and Pratap's home. And yet, he hadn't been able to sleep a wink. He sat on his favorite chair, The Chair, as his friends put it, with his legs folded. In his right hand, was a pendant embedded in simple gold clasps made into a locket woven in a red silk thread. Pratap sat with his eyes closed. To an observer, he would appear to be in deep meditation. But Pratap's mind was far from the peace and calm one expects from mediation, it had been replaying the happenings of the last 24 hours on a loop.
~~flashback~~
As Pratap ran through the mall, his heart raced, with fear, and adrenaline. As he swept past families enjoying a day out, he caught a few people looking at him like he was crazy. He couldn't blame them, he was constantly looking over his shoulder and then looking in the front to find his way back to his friends. He had a million thoughts running through his mind... the foremost one being - he ABSOLUTELY could NOT be caught by any of those men, who he still didn't know the identity of. Who were those men? How did they know his father? How did they know about the Agency? Where were his friends? Would he find them in time? Had the men seen him or the girl? He needed to talk to his father, or Rawat uncle ASAP!
As Pratap ran down to level 2 at the entrance of the convention, by some miracle, that Pratap would definitely thank Eklingji for, Chak and Ven appeared, excitedly discussing about the new story arc of some game or another. The moment they saw Pratap however, they both went very quiet. Pratap indicated that they needed to leave with a tilt of his head and his friends followed him, thankfully, without asking any questions. As Pratap called Ahmed Kaka so he could bring him their car, Pratap's eyes fell on another car pulling out of the parking lot. He thought he saw a familiar looking blue-and-gold dupatta being pulled in through the back seat window just as something small fell out of the window. As the car rushed out of the parking lot, Pratap ran to the spot where the car had been a moment ago and picked up what looked like a pendant on a silk thread and hit the call button on his phone. "Ahmed Kaka, we need to get to the hotel, NOW."
Ahmed Kaka had gotten Pratap and his friends to the hotel in record time. He had been so quick that Pratap didn't even get a chance to respond to Chak and Ven's increasingly worried expressions. As he opened the door to his hotel room, he found the one person he believed could calm him down. "Maa sa!!" Pratap exclaimed. His mother, who was reading a book, looked up at him. Any other woman, would have at least looked slightly startled at her son's sudden exclamation, but not Mrs. Jaiwanta Uday Singh. His Maa sa simply picked up her cell phone, dialled a number, and an hour later, Pratap and his Maa sa, along with Chak and Ven were pulling out of the hotel having checked out. Three hours later, the whole group boarded a flight that would take them home.
