Chapter 50
The wedding was a grand affair that was attended by everyone- well everyone that was important to the couple from family to friends, council members to army personnel. Ajabde looked gorgeous in her bridal attire while Pratap looked every bit of the warrior he was and together they made one good looking pair.
It was two days after their wedding that DheerBai was punished publicly for all her misdeeds- all the men were present to witness the end whereas the women saw it from the balcony of the castle as Kunwar Jagmal was young and none of the ladies wanted to leave him alone. Before she was hanged DheerBai did not utter a single word but did curse Pratap for losing the one he loved- she said, "you will lose the person you love the most. They will die before your eyes and you won't be able to do a single thing to stop it then you will realise what helplessness is Kunwar Pratap"
The entire public became enraged hearing her curse and threw stones at her and then the sentence was carried out- DheerBai was hanged and then her body was taken for the last rights which were performed in a very quiet manner. Pratap was tensed since being cursed as he did not want to lose any of his family members but he also knew that the curse was not for his family but for the one he loved most so he decided to stay away from her
Ajabde was with Kunwar Jagmal who loved playing with her- as she played with her youngest brother-in-law in her room she sensed his presence- he had been avoiding her since Dheer Bai's public hanging which was 3 days ago- he had excuses for not being present for anything- he did come for the puja they were required to perform and even had meals but he did avoid her- well all the mothers knew about it and she herself gave them a solution which might have been the reason for his presence
Pratap: Ajabde
Ajabde: Yes Kunwarsa How can I help you?
Pratap: I demand an answer from you
Ajabde: With regards to what?
Pratap: Why are you not coming with us to Chittor?
Ajabde: Did you want me to come with you?
Pratap: Why wouldn't I want you to come?
Ajabde: Well let's see you have been avoiding me for the last 3 days- I get it you are a busy person but you could at least find a minute to greet me but even that is troublesome which leads me to believe that you think this wedding was a mistake so I'm rectifying it. You go back to Chittor while I stay here and we say it's for the Gauna tradition and no one gets their feelings hurt
Pratap knew he had hurt her by his actions but he had a good reason- DheerBai cursed me in front of everyone Ajabde, she cursed me to bear the death of a loved one and I won't be able to stop it
Ajabde: Death is a part of life- I know she cursed you but what if you lose your life in a battle what then? Should I also hide and avoid you? Should Rani Ma also maintain distances from you and Daajiraj for the fear of losing a loved one. You get one life and I thought you actually wanted to spend it together with me but guess I was wrong
She picked up a crawling Jagmal and took him to Rani Sajja Baiji as she was looking after the toddler while the others planned their return journey. Pratap knew he had made a mistake and he needed to ask for forgiveness but how?
Chapter 51
Ajabde lay in her bed that night thinking of her conversation with her husband- he had hurt her maybe not intentionally but he did hurt her and now he was acting like suggesting for the Gauna was a mistake. All the elders had left for the temple that afternoon as advised by Raj Purohitji to counter the curse by DheerBai.
Ajabde took a turn and tried to sleep but in vain as sleep did not come to her but she still closed her eyes hoping for a miracle on the other hand Pratap was climbing up the wall to enter Ajabde's room- she had locked her doors so there was no way he was going through the main door and he wanted to surprise her so he was climbing the wall. He jumped through the balcony and found Ajabde sleeping on her bed with the moonlight falling on her face making her glow but it was the dried tears and wet lashes that made his chest constrict. He knew he was the reason for her tears he had failed to keep his promise of making her smile and here she was crying. He sat by her bedside and wiped her tears away gently
Ajabde felt someone touching her she had an inkling of the identity of the person but then she thought she was dreaming so she slowly opened her eyes to find her husband sitting by her bedside. She shot right up and looked around
How did you manage to enter my room? She was trying to look for his entry source while he was smiling at her adorable mannerisms
Pratap pointed towards the balcony which made her run towards the balcony where she saw the rope- you climbed in through the balcony? What if someone saw you do it? You don't think of anything do you?
She was about to give him a good one when he placed his finger on her lips
Pratap: I know I hurt you by staying away but at the time that was all I could do because I don't know what I would do if I lost you Ajabde You are everything for me and I' tired of staying away
Ajabde: Then don't
He moved and gathered her in his arms holding her tight not wanting to let go which was returned as a gesture from Ajabde as well
Pratap: I'm scared of losing you
Ajabde: So am I Kunwar Pratap but that does not mean we stop living our lives
Pratap: You are coming with us to Chittor he said with a touch of finality- there was no questioning it
Ajabde: Huh? Chittor with you- I was thinking of staying
Pratap held her down on the bed- holding her hands in his staring into those deep eyes that made him want to drown in him and then he moved forward and captured her lips in a passionate kiss making her forget everything
Ajabde had no idea what she was talking about- forget talking she forgot what she was thinking- well at the moment she decided to enjoy her first kiss with her husband and nothing else mattered to her
Pratap broke the kiss and whispered in her ears: You are coming with me- you will join me in every trip I take Ajabde because I'm not leaving you behind. Ajabde just nodded her head and snuggled closer as her eyelids felt heavy and then they dropped taking her into the land of dreams
Chapter 52
EPILOGUE
It had been a year and 2 months since the grand wedding of Kunwar Pratap and Rajkumari Ajabde. The Rajputana had witnessed a few major changes with Akbar increasing his power by marrying Rajput princesses and controlling the lands which led to a heated council discussion- Ajabde remembered those days and nights when her husband would spend majority of his time in the dangal sthal as to work out his anger and frustrations. She would calmly sit in the dangal sthal watching him practice and after he was done he would join her and they would either go outside from where she could watch the stars or they would return back to their room where he would try to figure out a way out of the impossible situation
Shakti had gone for a trip to gather some information about the Mughals and their new weaponry and Pratap had decided to patrol the border areas- Ajabde wished to visit a temple so it was decided that Pratap would accompany her on the trip and while she was at the temple he would go ahead to check on the borders
It was one of their first trips together alone since their wedding and Pratap was not surprised to learn that Ajabde was a calm and no fuss companion- she never asked for a break even for lunch instead she calmly read her Granths which she brought with her throughout her journey. They stopped in the nights when she would look after the food preparations and then serve him after he was done she would go and rest as she knew they needed to get up early. The trip was a memorable one as it was on the trip that Pratap had finally made a move in terms of physical intimacy
It was raining and Ajabde was drenched from head to toe and so was he- they had decided to take a stroll after dinner as he did not feel like sleeping and so they were walking discussing about the visit to the temple when the clouds burst open drenching them both. They took shelter under a tree- Ajabde opened her hair and was trying to dry them even though it was useless when she moved them back to the other side with swing making her hair hit Pratap on his face leaving behind water droplets She turned around to find him standing pretty close to her which made her heart beat faster and breaths became shallower Kunwar...Kunwar Pratap she whispered as he came close and captured her lips in a searing kiss - the rains fell quenching the thirst of the thirsty earth while they stood underneath the giant tree holding each other closer as they could get and then Pratap's hand held her tight by the waist- skin met skin and flames burst sending already raging nerves into an overdrive. Ajabde held her husband by the neck as he trailed kisses down her neck and her shoulder as his lips moved Ajabde got lost and held him tightly scared that if she let go then she would fall. Pratap's hands roamed on her back and pressed her tightly into him as if wanting to just become one when thunder and lightning rolled in bringing with them concerned voices. Ajabde heard them but her husband was lost so she slowly caressed his cheek and pointed out for the voices. They broke their hug and straightened their selves and walked back to the camp with memories of their time together fresh in their minds
They had consummated their marriage shortly after the trip but then Pratap had to leave for a war. They won the war but Ranaji decided to move his capital to a safer place. Pratap was not in agreement but he had to follow orders- he would discuss his thoughts and ask her opinion on it and she tried to be as objective as she was capable of. The location had been chosen and work had begun on building the new capital when Ajabde was given the news that changed her life completely - she was pregnant with their first child and that night everyone was told the good news as well
7 months later Kunwar Amar Singh made his grand entry into the world wailing at the top of his voice using his strong lungs to the hilt- the labour was a difficult one with Ajabde losing her consciousness after seeing her child. It had been an uphill battle for Ajabde who was exhausted and tired but when she opened her eyes she found her husband cradling their new born son in his large arms telling him a story. She called out for him softly, he looked at his wife with relief shining clearly as he was about to call for the Vaid she requested to hold her son
Vaidji came and checked her- advised proper rest and went away. Ajabde held her child and Pratap sat beside her looking at the miracle they created together- a family that would always be together and he told her that no matter what happens that she would be his forever- she was not allowed to leave him. She just repeated his words: Forever Yours
