The Personal Life of Maharana Pratap: His Wives, His Sons & His Daughters!

May 23, 2014 By Deepti Verma in Entertainment Tags: History, Maharana Pratap, Relationships, TV

After Sony TV Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap went on air, almost everybody wanted to know about the personal life of Maharana Pratap. No wonder, our history textbooks only focused on his love towards the Rajputana soil and the famous Battle of Haldighati. While we were always bestowed with lots of information on his fights, strategies and even his loyal horse Chetak, never ever we were given the details of his family, that is, his wives and his sons. Let us now focus on the Personal Life of Maharana Pratap which revolves mainly around his wives and his sons.

Maharana Pratap and His Marriages

Maharana Pratap being the head of the Sisodia clan and the ruler of Mewar had lots of responsibility towards Mewar. His duty was not only to protect the region from Mughals but also to restrict the Rajput kings from joining hands with the Mughals. Back then, many of the Rajput rulers gave their hands to Mughal King Akbar to avoid any possible attacks over their region.

This was strictly against Maharana Pratap's principle and perhaps that is why over the years Maharana Pratap married many of the Rajput Princess mainly for political alliances. Maharana Pratap altogether had 11 wives and 25 sons.

The producer of the TV serial Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap, Contiloe Entertainment claims that Ajabde and Pratap were best friends who fell in love before they became husband and wife.

Although, this can be possible going by the assumption that Ajabde's father was a samanth in Uday Singh's court, there is no document that support this basis. Ajabde had one more son Bhagawandas.

Rani Solankhinpurbai

She was 2nd wife of Maharana Pratap and had two sons Kunwar Gopal and Kunwar Sahas Mal (Third Son). Sahas Mal is the founder and ancestor of the Rawats of the Dhariawad Estate and so he is also the First Kunwar Saheb of Dhariawad. His successor was Kunwar Bhupat Ram.

Besides, these 11 wives and 17 sons, Maharana Pratap Singh had 5 daughters as well. No wonder during his stay in jungles, his daughter's hunger and plight made him write the famous letter to the Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Yeah. Wedlock means before wedding. A baby born out of wedlock means, it is born bfore the girl gets married..

Wedlock does not mean before marriage. The definition of wedlock is "the state of being married". Wedlock is the same thing as being married, so a child born out of wedlock means a child born outside the institution of marriage (i.e. not to a married couple).

He did. Akbar had 36 wives and over 300 concubines in his harem. Compared to that, Pratap's 11 wives seem paltry.

I don't think the Rajputs had concubines. They had a very strict code of conduct where it concerned women. If there were women in their household, they were either mothers, sisters, or lawfully wedded wives. Akbar is considered one of the better Mughals, but generally the Mughals were not known for their respect towards women. That is how the practice of child marriage came up (both in Hinduism and Islam). In Hinduism at least, child marriage is not sanctioned in the scriptures until the Mughal Era, because families were worried about the safety of their unmarried daughters, so they gave them in marriage at a very young age since the Mughals left the married women untouched (for the most part).

"out of wedlock" was wrongly put in the article...
they had a child obviously after they married, coz amar singh was born after two years...

11 wives is not exactly a big number for those days - and as pointed out, after ajabdeh, pratap married most of them out of political alliances specifically after 1962, since that was the year, when akbar married jodha, and pratap was requested by various kingdoms to marry their daughters, since jalal would stake claim on them...Pratap's father had 22...and most kings had multiple wives..

.but akbar had atleast 36 wives and approx 300 women in his harem - the number is highly debated though amongst the historians...
