Kasturi ke intezzar mein !

Coming May will see a heat of a different kind ! As KBC wraps up to be replaced by Ekta's Kasturi, we think the later will set a new kind of competition. For a long time now, the show like the Janus is being torn between 'keep it under wraps and stimulate constant hype.'

Initially, the show promised a new starcast. However, from the number of actors who've auditioned for the same, tell a different story altogether. Be it either Eijaz Khan, Sanjit Bedi from the older generation (that's what they are in Balaji terms), or the mid wingers Shabbir Ahluwalia or Manish Raisinghani, or the young entrants Mouni Roy and Pulkit Samrat.

There have been quite a few changes in the main male lead, earlier it was Eijaz Khan, who specialises in cameos and short stints with Balaji whilst juggling his movie career. He was then taken over by Manish Raisinghani, who had to pull himself off the show as he had no dates to spare for Kasturi. Now the buzz goes that the lead has been handed over to the hapless Sanjit Bedi, who was bad in Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka and not so good in Viraasat.

And who will be the lead protagonist Kasturi in the show? Keep watching this space for more!

Manish has no time for fun

Television actors working round-the-clock and fainting on the sets is something that we've heard off many times. But there doesn't seem to be another option for the actors. That is exactly what Manish Rai Singhani who plays Nirvaan in Betiyaan.. Apni Ya Paraya Dhan found out. He had to work six days at a stretch and that too for long hours. He says, "Forget going to the gym or meeting my family, I didn't even have time for myself. I had to catch up on sleep on the sets itself !" Well Manish, do remember what they say about all work and no play making Jack a dull boy.

Betiyaan's Jyoti 'Chand' Makkar gets candid!

It is very rare that one comes across a frank actress; Jyoti Makkar is one such young and peppy actress to chat with. Chand from Star One's Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan has her track increasing now. Once a prop amongst other sisters and a foil for Krishna; Chand has now carved a niche for herself in the huge clan. Here's a tte--tte with Jyoti to find her opinion on her daily soap.

The story features a speculative love triangle as Chand has her heart set on Parth aka Gautam Rode. However she is forced into a marriage of compromise with Waqar Sheikh. During the trial of her brother Nirvaan she has had some really strong scenes to enact.

But Jyoti believes the track is going a little slow. When asked whose character she would like to essay if not hers, she says frankly, "I think all of them are just in their casting, sometimes I feel I should play Veera…Savyli is a very good character….for a change I want to play the blind Koyel."

But she soon gets back to reality, "My character Chand is a good, sacrificing, ideal daughter. I was earlier in the shadow of Krishna and but now I have an identity of my own. I can do things for my family. So right now I like my role the most!"

What drove her to become a TV actress? "What I like about this medium is that whenever you switch on the TV, you are there. I actually prefer daily soaps over films. In theatres people come to watch you; but in a soap, irrespective of whether they like it or not, you are there! So you have to check me out." Quite a self-assertive closure!

"I want to be a chemistry professor!"
Gauri Nirgudkar

Reserved is her middle name. Krishna aka Gauri Nirgudkar from Star One's Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan is probably in the league of the top 'politically correct' actors I have encountered. The polite and low profile lady voices that she is in the field courtesy destiny.

Krishna, who plays the lead in this late night daily, is not star struck or in awe of her public image. The fragile damsel's day begins with shoots, naps in interims and later on her way back home; very unlike her on-screen character Krishna who would twist an arm to get her job done.

As I gather my questions, I am well prepared for her "No Comments". We commence with…so how does she like herself in this avatar? "I enjoy playing the backbone of the family. I like that aspect of Krishna. I have a romantic track with Parth (Gautam Rhode)".

That's all that I can get from her about her role and the show, she doesn't tell me is anything apart from being the protagonist. As per her current track she is alleged to have all screen space with the budding love triangle (Parth-Krishna-Karan) going full throttle.

We move on to talk about something more informal than the show. Say what would she be if not an actress? With that question her co-stars split with laughter. She voices, "Chemistry professor', she explains, "My mother is a chemistry professor, I graduated in the same stream and I really love the subject." So does she miss her teaching career? "Not quite. I tutor my sister so that ways I satisfy my urge. I don't plan anything in life, like acting wasn't. There's never a seclect agenda to my life or my chosen profession."

Her co-star adds, "When we first found it, I was amazed! You know between shots, actors surf the net, watch po*n or chat but I caught her checking up on chemistry formulae. We have gotten used to it and now even we enjoy it with her."

Being a hard-core Maharastrian, we'd like to know her take on the Marathi T.V industry? "Well, I still think that they are rich in content as compared to an average Hindi soap on the small screen."

That is not all; the lady has an award winning Marathi Film to her merit, Uttrayan where she plays Neena Kulkarni in her young age.Once an actor does a movie it is often assumed that they would not step into the television industry, however Gauri contests that, "For me, nothing comes planned. So I go with the flow. I am not specific about T.V or films. It's important that I enjoy what I do."

It is rumoured that she has been offered a bag of new shows but refused to take up any. She explains her reason for doing just one show. "I can't work like my co-stars, they run from one set to another, work in shifts, manage dates etc… I can't slog. I do only one thing at a time. Right now, I have all the time for Betiyaan Apani Ya Paraya Dhan. Nothing else."

Now that's what we call commitment.

From Chemistry professor to actor!

"I wanted to became an chemistry professor", says Gauri Nigudkar, lead in STAR One's 'Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan'.

Gauri Nigudkar, a newcomer who looks a little like Karisma Kapoor, plays Krishna – one of the lead roles - in the Star One serial Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan. But behind this pretty face, is a very intelligent polite and low profile girl. The actress told us that she had always planned to become a chemistry professor but destiny had completely different plans for her.

"My mother is a chemistry professor. I graduated in the same stream and I really love the subject. I think I would have definitely become a chemistry professor", she says. However, Gauri has found another way to fulfill her teaching ambition. "I tutor my sister so that way I satisfy my urge. Even my co-actors were amazed when they saw me checking up chemistry formulae and now they are used to it."

She says that although she got the role of Krishna quite by chance, she enjoys acting immensely. "I don't plan anything in life, like acting wasn't. I enjoy playing the backbone of the family. I like that aspect of Krishna. I have a romantic track with Parth (Gautam Rhode)."

"I go with the flow. I am not specific about TV or films. It's important that I enjoy what I do," she adds.

Speaking about her future, Gauri says she would rather take things slow and steady. "I can't work like my co-stars - they run from one set to another, work in shifts, manage dates etc… I can't slog. I do only one thing at a time. Right now, I have all the time for Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan. Nothing else."

Being a hard-core Maharashtrian, Nigudkar says she is a bit a partial to the Marathi TV industry? "Well, I still think that they are rich in content as compared to an average Hindi soap on the small screen. I have done a small role in the Marathi film called Uttrayan where I'm playing Neena Kulkarni at a younger age."

A Bachchan link in television
By: Shaheen Parkar
April 17, 2007

Paraya Dhan actor Rajiv Verma is related to the Bachchans through his wife Rita (who is Jaya's sister), but they don't talk about it

Don't Be Absurd: A file picture of Rajiv Verma with wife Rita

Film and TV actor Rajiv Verma has a little-known link to the first family of B-Town, the Bachchans. Few are aware that Rajiv's wife Rita is the younger sister of Jaya Bachchan.

Rita is an educationist based in their hometown Bhopal, and is also a theatre actress who runs a group called Bhopal Theatres.

They have two sons: Shiladitya, who is a management consultant and a painter (also based in Bhopal), and Tathagat, a software engineer working in Mumbai.

As for his Bachchan connection, Rajiv never talks about it and completely avoids the topic when broached.

Rajiv has been acting for over two decades but has always kept himself away from media glare. He currently features in the Star show, Paraya Dhan, besides Aasman Ne Jo Likha and Kaise Kahoon, both on DD1.

When we called on Rajiv, he was on the sets of the Star show Paraya Dhan.

"At the moment, I am shooting for three serials, so there is no time left to take on films," he says. "Moreover, only if there is something substantial do I take on a film, otherwise there is no point."

True to character

Ji Nahin, Jijaji:
Jaya Bachchan

Rajiv has featured in scores of films like Koi Mil Gaya, Maine Pyar Kiya, Chalte Chalte, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Hum Saath Saath Hain.

He is always seen playing senior fatherly roles. "I began acting with character roles only," points out Rajiv, who began with theatre in Bhopal.

As we get talking, we pop the question about the Bachchans. Isn't his wife related to Jaya Bachchan? "So that is the real reason you called me," he shoots back.

"I don't want to say anything about the relationship. I refuse to answer such absurd questions."

It's absurd

As for whether he and his family have been invited for the AbhiAsh wedding, he says, "No. Why are you asking me this?

I repeat, I don't answer absurd questions. I am needed for a shot. I have to go," says Verma, before we heard the click of the phone.

Though there is no denying the fact that the Bachchans and the Vermas are related, it seems that the low-profile family has always preferred to be away from the limelight rather than flaunt their Bachchan link.

Manav plays pranks

Looks like playing pranks on the sets is kind of a relaxation strategy adopted by the 'oh so overworked actors'. This time it was actor Manav Gohil who decided to pull a fast one on the entire unit of his Star One show, Betiyaan Apni Yaa... Paraaya Dhan.

Manav Gohil, the new entrant in the show decided explains, "As the shoot was on, I had to take the director under confidence. First I said that I wanted to go back home for some silly reason. When that did not work, I managed to rope in a few of my-costars and put up a false fight between us".

The people involved acted so well that everyone believed when Manav declared that either it would be he or the co-star, who would remain in the serial. Having no idea that it was a prank, everyone got worried. The production team even came forward to put and end to the fight.

"Then I asked the executive producer to gather everyone, as I had to make a serious announcement" chuckled Manav. When every one was together, Manav announced that it was a mere prank played by him. Everyone had a hearty laugh and the production team was relieved.

"I usually do so whenever the shoot gets boring", adds Manav who is playing a negative character on the show. Well, carry on Manav. Till no one is actually hurt, everything is fine.

The heat is on!

Every summer the temperatures rise a few Celsius higher, the heat often takes a toll on our physique, skin and hair! But stars need to keep away from fatigue and look fresh even in the midst of heavy make-up, burning lights and humid shoot locations. We check on preventive measures our T.V celebs use to beat the blazing ball of fire!

Shaleen Bhanot :

I take bath twice if not thrice every day, just like kids do, just like kids do! There is nothing like a cold shower… it feels like a blessing in summers. I drink lots of Nariyal pani and keep my attitude cool- a hot head on a hot afternoon is not welcomed at all. When I am not shooting, I sit in my vanity van all the time. I avoid eating hot spicy stuff as it spoils your skin and makes one feel uneasy as spice often generates heat in the body. I do drink a lot of water and avoid roaming around in the sun, the less the exposure the better chances are of getting rid of the tan.

Smita Bansal :

I have a migraine problem so I have to be extra careful during summers to combat the Mumbai heat. I try not to stay empty stomach, as it could take a toll on my health. I thrive on fruits, be it apples or oranges and I drink water like a fish. Often when I am stressed and tired I gulp down a glass of flavoured Glucose. Best way to ward off the heat is to distract oneself from the weather conditions; I often concentrate on the company I am in, than worry about how hot it is outside! Now of course most indoor sets are air conditioned, so it's comfortable but in case of an odd outdoor shoot, exposure to sun and dust is unavoidable, so the distraction tip comes handy.

Monaz :

The best remedy to save the skin from sun damage is to apply sunscreen regularly. I drink litres of water. I don't avoid any specific food items just because it's summer time, it doesn't affect my digestive system! I drink lots of fluids to flush out all the acidic content in the body which rises in the season. I avoid colas as they are empty calories, and felicitate bloating and do not really quench thirst. I wash my face regularly and am even very particular about hair wash. In summers hair often accumulates sweat and becomes sticky, it's important to wash your hair everyday to feel fresh and smell good. In case of an on-location shoot one is helpless and has to bear the brunt, its best to drink Nimbu Pani in such situations.

Munisha Khatwani :

I try and stay indoors as far as possible, it's best to prevent than search for cures later! I take a cold water shower thrice a day. Keeping bottles of iced tea, diet coke, sweet lassi and Glucon D orange flavour often come handy. I carry all the refreshers in my ice-box whenever I am out shooting. I stay put in my vanity van between shoots.

Lataa Sabarwal :

The only way to prevent dehydration in summers is to drink lots of water, nimbu pani and vegetable juices. Often when I am driving, I wear a white full sleeves shirt, big dark shades to prevent dark shadows and a thin scarf to cover my hair and head from the soaring heat. According to me, colas and spicy food should be completely avoided. I eat and drink everything fresh to beat the Mumbai heat; stale food makes you bloat and burp.

Over on entertainment channels, it was a with a twinge of sadness that one had to bid adieu to Shah Rukh's KBC this week. The guy had just slipped comfortably into the skin of the character he was playing, and the wit and humour had just begun to show. But better to leave when at the top, than leave after the audience is jaded.

The same cannot be said of the several new soaps that have launched in the last few months. After an initial push of two to three weeks, they all seem to slip into auto pilot mode, preferring the conventional route taken by all soaps before them. Kaajjal , Maayka, Paraya Dhan, Virasat... none of the shows appears to have a track that's worthy of a mention. Sony's Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, which hasn't really lived up to the standards one usally associates with producers Tony and Deeya Singh, is now going in for a leap. This soon? The show has barely been on air for two months. But a leap at least temporary respite in ratings. If that too doesn't work out, will Jeete Hain... go the Kulvaddhu way? Does anyone even remember Kulvaddhu?

Stars' obsession!

We all have quirks that just don't go away. It could be being fanatical about germs or compulsively having to have things in a certain order. In serious cases it is called an obsessive-compulsive disorder where an individual is disturbed by obsessive thoughts and performs rituals to counteract his anxiety. We asked our stars to share some of the things they are absolutely obsessive about and they tell you why they could well be obsessive-compulsive...

Shveta Salve
I get obsessive about tidiness! If a certain thing is not in its place it bothers me to no end. If a glass of water is too close to the edge of a table I have to shift it more inside. I know it's not going to fall but I get totally freaked out that someone will tip it over and drop it. Even if I'm sleeping and I see it I have to get up because I get bothered so much. At parties I've noticed that people who drink always keep their glasses at the edge of the bar. I've walked all the way from across the room to put glasses away from the edge!

Another thing I'm paranoid about is smoking in bed. When my friends come over I'm constantly dusting my bed in case there is any ash on it. They smoke and I literally hold the ash tray under their chins so that no ash falls down.

Rohit Roy
I cannot get up in the morning and not have my one cup of tea and read all the newspapers. Without that I just cannot get out of bed. If anyone else reads the papers before me they have to make sure they put them back in the same exact place and iron them as well! This is one thing I do every single day. Whether I am shooting at 9 or 6 or even 4 in the morning I wait for my newspapers to come so I can read them. Sometimes when I'm traveling it isn't possible to get the papers and that makes me very unsettled. I'd say I'm quite obsessive about this.

Narayani Shastri
I've very finicky about keeping my hands and feet clean. If I touch anything which is not very familiar I go and wash my hands immediately! I wash them several times a day. It's mostly because I have many dogs at home so it's a habit to keep washing my hands but even if I'm out I end up washing my hands a lot. I just have to keep them clean. I can't walk barefoot anywhere because I just can't stand it. I don't like my feet getting dirty and wash them all the time too. I carry hand sanitizer with me and even after using it I have to run water over my hands.

Negar Khan
I am very particular about cleanliness and keeping things at their right place. I don't like disorder at home. I clean my house myself and make sure my clothes are washed right and kept by in the right place. I section my clothes by colour and put them in the washing machine and then I iron them properly and put them back. I can't stand when my sister doesn't keep her clothes back! She's a little lazy and I keep telling her but she doesn't listen which gets me irritated. I do have help around the house but I love doing housework. When I have a holiday you'll always see me doing chores around the house and putting everything in order.

Chunkey Pandey
I'm obsessive about keeping my old clothes. I just can't throw clothes out. I have clothes that I had in college still with me so that's a really long time! I convince my wife that fashion always moves in cycles so what I have now may come back in style 5 years from now. I'm lucky because I haven't changed in shape or size since then.

Manav Gohil
I don't like to wake up late in the morning. I feel very upset and hate myself if I do.

I don't let late nights happening often. I like to sleep on time and wake up on time so I make sure I do that. I am a disciplinarian and love to maintain order. Getting up late takes the control away from me and my day so the earlier the better. Otherwise I'm a pretty balanced guy.

Juhi Pande
When I lock my car I have to go and check whether it's been locked properly. I am aware when I lock it but when I walk away I'm compelled to go back and check the door handle. That is my routine with it. I lock it, walk away and then walk to the back door and pull the handle.

As a kid I had some strange quirks too. Walking home from school I would think that a bus on the road had to coincide with me when walking past a tree or else. There were funny things like that which used to bother me but luckily I've grown out of it!
