Zain cried that night. That kind of crying that does not happen after when we are eighteen.
His mouth open in a silent scream, his eyes bloodshot from tears unshed.
His toes curled and his fists clenched.
He rolled up into a ball and dry sobs racked his body.
Tears came easily now as he remembered his father's demise. His sudden departure.
He could feel his ears getting wet as his tears pooled in the pillow and sank in slowly.
He felt empty. Cold.
He remembered telling her that it was her fault. Her fault alone. And that marrying her was the biggest mistake of his life. Then he corrected himself. Is the biggest mistake.
He sneered. I want divorce. He had screamed.
He repeated that infernal word twice.
She slapped her hand across his mouth before he could utter it a third time.
She wasn't even allowed to attend the funeral.
He snorted in bad humor.
Mamu ki bhanji was not allowed to attend her mamu's funeral
Fate was cruel wasn't it?
And laying on his bed at half past one, contemplating his actions, he was glad.
Glad that she stopped him.
He would have been nothing without her.
His arms felt painfully empty. And his heart ached.
His brain and heart was yet again engaged in a mind numbing battle.
One held her responsible. The other trusted her blindly.
Yet he knew. He knew he needed her.
She said she had not filed a FIR. Then who did? It held her signatures.
But for a moment he wanted to stop caring.
He did not want to know who filied that FIR.
He just wanted to lay his head against her bosom and cry his heart out.
He just wanted to hug her tight and talk to her.
But where was she? She did not even come.to.their room. Their bhaad.
His mom had asked her to leave.
Did she.
He bolted upright, his throat constricted.
"Agar tum na chaho toh bhi mein tumhare ird gird mandrati rahungi."
She will not leave him surely?
He searched for her in the kitchen and the living room.
Then he realised- "Mamu ki bhanji was not allowed to attend her mamu's funeral."
He grabbed the car keys and drove to the cemetery.
He ran through rows and rows of graves until he reached his fathers.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw her.
Her frame was shivering and it had started to drizzle lightly.
The trees swayed in harmony, the moon full and bright, celebrating with the stars.
It shone clearly and seemed to overcome the contrasting dark clouds.
"Even he does not believe me mamu. Koi mujhpe vishwas nai karta. Aap kyun gaye humme chodke mamu. Apki bhanji ko chodkar kyun chale gaye?"
He placed a hand on her shoulders and she stiffined and then relaxed.
He sat down beside her and hugged her tightly, crying fully now.
"Zain". She whispered.
And they both sat in front of the grave of a man they loved dearly. A man who was their mentor.
A man who helped them find themselves in each other.
A man who helped them find love.
And suddenly he did not feel empty anymore.
That night Mamu Ki Bhanji and Mamu ka Beta grieved together for their mamu.
