A week went by a blur after that disastrous yet significant dinner. In the meantime lots of unusual things happened around zain making him almost run up the wall in frustration and in utter loss of knowledge of why and how these little yet disturbing things were happening to him or around him lately. But he could smell conspiracy behind the huge number of accidents and coincidences, only in that case he agreed with ayaan.
He had managed to appoint a maid who will come three days in a week and do all the chores... basically cleaning and laundry. Cooking was still in ayaans department, zain wondered if he had done any mistake by making ayaan his managing director and not a chef or something in the chain of various five star restaurants he owned back in india. But then again.. ayaan was loyal, reliable and efficient in what he had been doing... and not to mention he was a personal stress reliever, idea provider and occasionally a problem solver- best buddy..in both his professional and personal life as well.. and zain couldnt be more thankful.
Back to the little mishaps around zain- ... the most irritating of all was ross... savanah's dog who was the most loyal playmate to sarah and sammy.. started peeing in his front porch maintaining a daily routine. Well it was disgusting but when ayaan slipped on the liquid one day and fell down on his back... things got a little dangerous then.
Then food started disappearing from kitchen when it was kept beside the big kitchen window to cool down... specially cookies and cakes which were ayaans favourites. Zain didnt know if he should laugh at the humor or hire a detective to solve this all.. when he saw ayaan storming off to aliyaas house swinging a wooden spatula in his hand determined to encounter barqat... which followed by a chaotic shouting and cursing tournament.
Zain's car suffered from more injuries and colorful paintings apart from punctured tires every now and then. He didnt have any idea how banana peel came under his foot when he was strolling in his front yard keeping an eye on aaliyas house trying to get a glimpse of her and sooth the ache in his heart as much as possible but instead he ended up with an aching butt. When he stood up from the ground he thought he heard hushed chuckles of a childlike voice from the nearby bush. He was about to search inside the bush but his investigations went to drain when aaliya wearing her sky blue pajamas and a robe... came out of her house and began calling for sammy saying she couldnt find him. Like a hypnotized magnate he went to her and volunteered to the search party, as usual aaliya declined but he was persistent and refused to back down.
Zain was sitting on the fence infront of his house looking at the lit windows of aaliya's house, if people call him a stalker or a pervert... he didnt really care. He was happy to get the little glimpses of aaliya or the kids in the windows sometimes or their shadows behind the curtains wouls also do. He wondered if aaliya noticed him lurking in the shadows looking at her house, he hoped yes... and he hoped not at the same time.
He heard someone.. a female voice calling her from a distance, straightening his spine he turned his head to see who it was only to find out... savanah waving her hand which was adored with crinkled aged skin and colorful nails.
He pointed a finger at himself to ensure she was calling him and savanah nodded up down her head with an irritated scowl on her face. Zain wondered why the cranky woman was calling him. Oh.. no.. was it because she was going to lash at him for perving around aaliya's house ??
Anyway.. starightening the hem of his t-shirt and clearing his throat he set off to savanah's house. The old woman was sitting on an armchair in her front porch... she was smoking. Smoking !!
Well its not like he hand't noticed savanah's smoking habit before but something about the act was so uneasy, everytime he saw her sucking in the white smoke with a pleased expresion adoring her face.. zain got creeps in his brain.
He thought to compliment her and put himself out of the possible danger.. if he was in any. Savanah just stared for a few seconds at zain without blinking, her expression unchanged. Zain felt a little uncomfortable under her scrutiny. There was no chairs around him to sit except of the armchair but savanah was already sitting in it. Sitting on the stairs was an option but if he sat there he would have to crane his head upwards to look at the woman and talk to her, that would give him a feeling of being a kid again.. it would be more uncomfortable. So he leaned against the wooden pillar.
Savanah held out the cigerrete in between two fingers, the slow dizzying white smoke made it's way upwards. She picked up her beer bottle and took two big gulps. Zain raised an eyebrow in amusement, so the oldy was a drunkard too. How the hell aaliya sometimes left the kids under her supervision.
Noticing zain staring.. savanah waved the beer bottle before him. Smiling zain declined.. now more comfortably leaning back...
Savanah tilted her head towards her bottle, her graying hair swiveled at the movement.
Then out of the blue she blurted out the question.
She gestured towards aaliya's house with her eyes, the skin around her eyes crinkled making her age more prominent.
Zain was caught offguard by the question... mostly because of the suddenness.
He replied honestly...
A ghost of a smile played across savanah's face.
The woman talked absentmindedly gazing into a time unknown.. mind going back to a certain memory lane. Zain knew what she might be feeling right now... love... lost love. He too felt like that from a while now but he was lucky that God had finally decided to show him some mercy and landed him on aaliya's doorstep.
Snapping out of the memories savanah snapped at zain now and stunned him with her mood swing.
Zain was sure that those two morons were none other than he himself and ayaan.. according to savanah. He was aware of the drama they were creating in daily basis, other neighbours were always giving them weird glances every now and then while passing by.
He rubbed the back of his neck...
Savanah threw her free hand up in the air dismissing zain's comment...
She added... " You yourself is also making a number of chaos young man, aaliya looks very troubled now-a-days but alive too... "
Again that ghost of a weird smile appeared on her lips, neither zain could understand the meaning of that smile nor the last words of her wise lecture. Looking at the woman standing at the last years of her life... zain just witnessed the loneliness and the void around her.. smartly hidden behind the veil of her cranks and occassional insanity .

Aaliya glanced once again at the backsit of the car through the rear view mirror. The twins were staring wide eyed at the back of her head, their expressions blank out of the shock they got merely half an hour back.
Aaliya held her breath and kept driving without a word knowing that both sarah.. sammy needed some time to sink in what she said to them a while back.
Earlier this morning aaliya took them to the school for their admission. Everything went well, sarah was a little shy and scared at first while questions were asked to her but with some encouragement she did well and afterwards made the teachers laugh with a few of her own innocent questions. Sammy went overboard and spoke more than he was supposed to but aaliya could say behind those confident facade of his... her son was nervous. But as always sammy amazed her by pushing back all his fears and insecurities.
Later she took the reliefed kids who were acting like they had won the world war three... to an ice cream parlour. After enjoying there favourite flavours of the icy heavens she told them that their dad wanted to see them. That's when aaliya got weary by the sudden silence that dawned upon both of the shocked children.
Earlier when she made the plan to tell them she didnt really know what respond was to be expected but she definitely didnt expect the silence.
Reaching home aaliya bent sideways against the door frame of the kids room while sammy was fiddling with his new school bag aaliya bought them, sarah was siting on the edge of her bed rocking her little legs back and forth while smoothing down her barbies hair.
Staring at them and trying but failing to understand the odd silence among them.. aaliya sighed and headed into the room. She stood between their single beds with her arms crossed.
Both sarah and sammy looked up at her from their sitting positions in bed with pouty lips and wide glossy eyes, aaliya's heart constricted playfully at the sight.
She softned her voice even more her mother instincts eager to wrap them in cottons and hide away from all the pain and reality in the world.. but she knew she had to do the exact opposite, exposing them to the vast reality rainbows of sorrow and joy was a necessity, because she knew receiving woulnds with the lessons of life in the process of growing up was inevitable.
She noticed sarah passing a look with sammy and then turned to look at her with a little hesitation.
Aaliya's heart thudded with pain in the realisation.
She picked up sammy in her arms, the little guy protested for a while to squirm free as he thought big boys never sits on their mommy's laps and he was a big boy now.. he was going to go to school from now on... but after a while he basked in the feeling of protection his mothers arms offered and sank his little head in her shoulder.
Aaliya sat down beside sarah with sammy clutching onto her, she pulled sarah closer to her with her free hand and the little girl poutingly rested her head on her chest.
Sarah immediately protested raising her head from her chest and looking up at her...
Aaliya sat stunned as sarah's dove shaped eyes filled with sad tears and sammy blinked rapidly in an attempt to hide the moistness in his eyes.
