Wow this forum is really dead😆

In a sea of generally atrocious, mind numbing base level fare on Indian TV these days, the first episode of this show stood out for it's lack of frills, lack of garish scenes, and more or less lack of cliches. So in no particular order, the things I liked:

1) A surprisingly realistically shown dysfunctional family...with a chachi who will shoulder the housework but never fail to jataao it, a host of squabbling cousins fighting over petty things, the parents busy justifying their own kids, too lazy to shoulder responsibilities, a sharp tongued daadi who worries over the future of holding this bursting at the seams family together.

Main point to be noted: The utter lack of any garish outfit or jewellery on any of these characters...absolutely shocking...and where is the obligatory daayan/chudail that passes for content on TV these days?

2) Abhishek a.k.a Bade Bhaiyya...these days the expectations are so low, the bar has been set so low for even a halfway decent characterization of characters, that when a surprisingly identifiable and natural character appears on screen, you almost find it hard to believe. Here's a guy who cheerfully stepped up to shoulder responsibility when pretty much every adult in the family chickened out and abandoned the family...the fact that this is a GUY character instead of the typical superwoman middle class future bahu material female lead is another point in his favor.

Why are gender stereotypes not challenged on TV more often I wonder...not every girl is born with the perfect bahu gene inside her as Meera introduction refreshingly shows...we are all works in progress...the fact that for once, instead of the mahaan girl, a guy is trying to hold his family together in a refreshingly optimistic and naturally matter of fact of way is nice to watch.

The fact that this is a character who dropped out of college, isn't some typical angry businessman hating the world, neither is he some guy crying at the drop of a hat over his emo bond with his mother...all A+s in my book right now...

3) The handling of the autistic character Rohan...I like what I've seen so far...doesn't seem caricaturish...hopefully they can retain a hold on that.

4) The background score...very apt...I feel I must mention this given that most shows these days are on random bollywood jukebox mode or have typical sounding scores...it's been a while since I saw some slice of life type bg score in a show...last one might have been NBT...nice to see something like that again.

5) My fav. scene in today's epi...the scene when Abhishek comes back to his room, goes over his many To-Do lists as he's walking around the room...you can see how that all constantly weights on his mind but the way it was shown was so lacking in melodrama that I liked it...and then the way the scene segues into his scene with his mother...her urging him to just get away from this madhouse...and he firmly talks of how a tree doesn't uproot itself simply because of some storms coming it's way...writing is pretty solid in the show so far...props to the writing team👏

Also, good cast...everyone is acting naturally.

Despite the show opening on a typical "Panditji looking for a rishta" premise, this show offered something refreshing in it's first episode because of the treatment of the storyline and characters...hope to see that carrying along through.

I loved how he twisted the chaotic scene of his household into a fandom scene which impressed their guest... I'm glad to say that I'm hooked to this show just after one episode... I love SONY for its content full shows

The scene between Abhishek and his mother and the one just before that were very well written and enacted.
I agree with the point that why the girl in the show has to be too Mahan and bear the responsibilities. For a change a responsible guy looks good to me.
Also a break from the typical angry young man of television is welcome.
The premise is a bit similar to sasural genda phool and Abhishek's dad leaving his wife and children is similar to badi maa's story there.
I loved the scene between Abhishek and the first uncle. It was so real like one of the scenes in our own life.

And the heroine for a change is not the usual bubbly chirpy gal who tries to spread happiness all over for no reason. I love the change.

The college dropout angle is also handled well without showing in a very melodramatic way.

The lady playing dadi is good too. She was in NUAC also as the dadi and was great there as well.

Another thing I liked is that someone girl's parents are no businessmen or goons. They are IAS officers.

Overall a good start. A show with good story and actors.

I liked how he diffused the situation when all of the cousins and parents were busy blaming each other...that was such an easy scene to go over the top with...suddenly showing the whole family either getting emotional at the drop of a hat or breaking into a "hum saath saath hain" type sequence...instead, he diffused it in such an understated manner...without making a big deal out of it...how quickly food can be a great unifier in the middle of never ending squabbles.

And yes indeed, thank god for Sony shows right now which are a doobte ko tinke ka sahara in the midst of utter trash on TV...even the most mediocre of shows on Sony are watchable cuz they all have atleast some form of sane content and that is a welcome relief.

@bold: A little bit, maybe...except that the "badi maa" equivalent in this case is a mom who is confined to the top floor of the house and can barely move around...in this case, the "Ishaan" of the house is truly the man of the house instead of a confused soul pampered and mocked by his whole family.

Abhishek has shown exceptional responsibility and maturity for someone saddled with all this at such a young age...and as his dadi rightly points out to the chachi...it is a tragedy that he had to sacrifice all his dreams to do this...but someone had to step up when no one else would.

Yes, all of the cast have realistic backgrounds and professions...good to see.

Ah. An essay after ages. Take my heart please!

I liked the episode for it's "slice of life" feel. This doesn't have your usual caricaturish villains , not for now atleast, but a family's struggle to survive.

Dadima is a very interesting character . She perceives so much and you can see the fear of this family collapsing . She has seen two sons walking out , not able to hold the burden of this family together. She is trying to hold it and knows the pressure on Abhishek , also the lack of respect he may have had. Very perceptive.

Abhishek is so refreshing. Typical Middle class boy yet there is something so grand about his gestures which make him stand out. He does the chores because he wants to be that pillar , I think it has to do with his father leaving them and he feels responsible. I loved his room, you could sense his life in those sticky notes and also his resolve to his mother when she asks him to run away.
I felt for him most when he stares at the Engineering college- you just feel for that kid when you see him giving up his saving for his cousin's CA books.

His mother is observant , the sindoor wearing..I feel part of her not coming down has to be psychological . Does she have another kid who is a bit challenged?

It's a very complex family with quirky characters. While be fun to see the mashup with the girl's family.

Big props for the natural tone and flow of the show.

Indeed, the slice of life feel is what had me sold too...am a big sucker for that formula done right cuz it happens like once in 5 years...last time was NBT😆

Re: Abhishek...word...I think his charm lies in his seeming ordinariness...somehow that stands out so much in a sea of dramatic characters...there's something...steady about him that quite struck a chord with me...like a quiet reliability...

Yes, he definitely feels responsible for the family since his father was the one who abandoned everyone but I like how he doesn't just keep dwelling on his father did...he's so firm about wanting to be there for his family, period...and it can't be easy with a crazy family like this.

The engineering college scene really was touching, I agree...especially the way he wistfully watches the people going about with their experiments, gadgets and whatnot...in barely 30 seconds, they established what dream he gave up and what it meant to him...props to writing/direction/acting.

Good point on the mother too...I also think part of it is psychological...she's probably in some kind of latent trauma after the abandonment but still tries to assert herself whenever she can from the isolated location...bristles when her sons are treated unfairly.

Yes, the other kid...Rohan seems autistic to me...I've worked with an autistic child before so for me, the mannerisms were bang on portrayed without getting caricaturish. I think Rohan is Abhishek's younger brother...

Girl also seems to have a freshness about her without being typically loud and "bubbly"...let's see how this goes :)
