Paradox
(An AkYa Drabble)
*******
He cast a covert glance at the slender figure sitting next to him in the cockpit, and wondered at how much of a paradox she was.
A woman with a mighty heart, encased in a deceptively fragile body.
A stickler for the rules. But throwing those very rules to the wind to save a life.
Possessed of a sharp intelligence. Yet, naive and pure gullible, unable to gauge the secret motives and the ways of the outside world.
Her steely ambitiousness; determined to succeed in her profession at any cost. But belying that attitude by letting her heart rule over her head every time.
Emotionless like a sphinx. During their disastrous first flight together, she had seemed to him to be completely incapable of any feeling.
Her compassion and deep empathy for the crying, desperate wife of a dying man cured that misconception of his.
Dressed smartly and professionally in a pilot's uniform, she seemed devoid of any overt female charms or womanly wiles.
But God!!! She was beautiful. Not just pretty, beautiful. And what made it more enchanting was that she seemed to be utterly unaware of it.
Though no man who came within a mile of her could help but spot her beauty and be disarmed by her charms.
Earnest to a fault; very serious, never smiling. Determined to succeed in her chosen profession. Yet, the look of childish glee on her face as she relished her chocolate in the hotel room proved how wrong he had been about her.
*******
Oblivious to his scrutiny all this while, she was engaged in checking the logs and status reports for the take-off.
He dragged his eyes off her, urging his mind to stop pondering on his co-pilot's endless contradictions.
His heart seemed to be whispering something alien to him. His brain, however, anxiously affirmed - She is just a co-pilot, nothing more than that.
Sighing, he returned to the task at hand, all the while reprimanding himself...
"Mind on the game, Akash...mind on the game..."
