The Chain of Sighs
This was the millionth time she was sighing in the midst of the silence prevailing in the room. A lot had happened since this day had started. She had delivered a baby, she had bonded with the most unexpected person to bond with, and she was being ignored by...him.
She had been trying to sleep for quite a while now and sleep seemed to be in a far away land. She kept tossing and turning every now and then but it didn't help much. His blank look and ignorant tone kept hurling in her mind. She didn't know why it was bothering her so much. I mean he probably had something important to attend to right? Or else he would have listened.
But nothing could change the facts. He had walked away not evening paying attention to what she was saying. Finally she gave up on the attempt to get sleep and sat up in her bed sighing yet again.
She picked up the batch that her Grandfather had given her. It was indeed a unique design, a rather intricate one to be honest. There were wings on both side expanding as if in a brief second it would actually fly off to freedom. She skimmed her hand over the wings and smiled lightly. Every time she looked at it she was reminded of her dream. The dream she was living everyday with a new confidence. Sure there were a lot of challenges she had faces. There will probably be more. Each one questioning her identity and risking her profession. But at the end of the day it feels good helping someone or knowing that you saved a life or brought a new life into the world cause it all comes down to be human...eventually.
It might sound ironic saying the sometimes rules and protocols don't apply to these kinda situation coming from a person like her. But then she had learned that from Captain Akash. Memorizing the the rule book doesn't do anything. Taking action does.
It had been only a few hours since he was acting..."weird" towards her but she already miss...
Wait..What? What am I saying! Ananya thought to herself. "Was I about to say I missed him?" she though out loud to no one in particular. As those words settled in the silence of the room she sighed for the third millionth time. There was no denying he was having an affect on her but it still seemed weird.
She peered at her iPhone. It was 5 AM. There was no point in sleeping now. So she decided to go for a jog to get her mind of the weird events occurring in her life.
In 10 mins she was out of the house breathing in the fresh air, earphones plugged in, and feeling the adrenaline pumping through her veins. It was a mashup called Pop Danthology 2012 and it was fast which, made her run even faster than usual. Maybe this was her way of getting all the frustration out or if you put it in technical then sweating it out.
The sun was rising above the horizon spreading its warm rays around the world. She stopped for a minute to take in the beautiful setting. It was indeed breathtaking. And it reminded her of a flight she had taken with him...She was praising the pattern of clouds that was passing by the window of the plane. He had noticed this and said, " Amazing isn't it? Work space with a breathtaking view all around you. Not everyone gets a job like this."
He had said that with such ease, with his usual smile and the mischievous glint in his eyes. Realizing she was lost in his world...AGAIN, Ananya shakes her head to clear her mind and starts jogging.
She was done with quota of jogging for today but she decided to stretch those muscles before she headed home. They were soar and they needed stretching! She did a round of basic stretches from her neck to her calfs and now it was time for sit ups. As she positioned herself to do the sit-ups, her music was louder than ever. She kept het hands beside her head and pulled her self up feeling the tightening in her abs. That's when she saw it. Someone was standing at the distance and observing her.
At first she ignored it thinking that it might be some passerby but after a few times she had done the sit-ups. The person was still standing there and now he...it was he, was walking towards her direction. Suddenly she was self-conscious. What if he was a stalker? or worse a criminal or something? Panic ran through her nerves and she gulped the lump that had formed in her throat.
"Relax Ananya," Ananya whispered to herself, "Just show him some of your martial arts skills or better yet kick him in the balls." She got up and pretended to drink from her water bottle. She could hear his footsteps crunching on the grass as he got closer.
Ananya waited for the right moment and when she knew he was right behind her she turned around to throw a punch at the guy. But her fist met thin air. Then she noticed that he was ducking and as he slowly came up her mouth went down.
*Captain Akash?! What is he doing here?* Ananya thought.
"Thanks for not knocking me out Ms.Rawat. Appreciate it!" Akash said with his sarcastic tone.
"No..I...thought it was...uh...I am sorry," Ananya said with an apologetic look in her eyes. Then the awkward silence settled in as if both of them were contemplating about who was going to make the move. "So, how come you are here?" Ananya asked finally giving in to her curiosity.
"Oh I was just passing by when I noticed you in the park so decided to say hey," Akash said with his sly tone as if I-was-ignoring-you think didn't happen at all and that's what irked Ananya the most. How could he change so easily?
"I am amazed it how you can just pretend that nothing is wrong! Seriously...how can you be so...?" Ignorant, Not-bothered, A Jerk. All those words popped up into Ananya's mind but of course she didn't speak them out loud. This was the 4th millionth sigh from this morning.
Akash stood there taken aback by Ananya's little outburst. But she was right menacingly. He had been ignoring Ananya the whole day yesterday . Believe it or not it was his fault this time unlike the first time they had met. He smiled inwardly at that thought.
Seeing Akash not responding Ananya decided to leave from there. She walked past him but couldn't get any further that one step as she felt him gripping her hand.
She turned around to find him looking at her...with a tired look on his face. She was surprised seeing him like this because Captain Akash never let anyone see through him and just this once he had put his facade down and what lay beneath was more than words could communicate.
"I...I...am sorry." Akash said with a genuine tone.
"Wait...what did you say?Did you just say ...sorry? You...Captain Akash said Sorry! Pinch me before I wake up from this dream." Ananya said adding extra exaggeration. It was hard to control the smile that was forming on her lips.
Akash rolled his eyes at Ananya's comment and pinched her.
"Ouch! So it's not a dream...well I am glad you realized that you were begin very rude yesterday." Ananya said in a modest tone. She wanted to say that he was being a jerk but decided against it. He might take in the wrong way...plus they weren't that close...
"Yes...yes I was. And thank you for reminding me," Both smiled at each other knowing that the ignorant behavior from Akash's side had subsided and hopefully it won't happen in the future but now there was only question occupying Ananya's mind...
But as if Akash had read her mind, "I know what you are thinking. But for right now let's just say there are somethings that are better to left unexplained."
There eyes met at that moment and it was as if a silent agreement was passed without any words being spoken.
"So Miss. Rawat care to accompany me on an early coffee?" Akash asked with the same flirtatious tone.
"Ananya..call me Ananya off duty. And I'd be honored to join you." Both of them smiled at each other and walked off to their early coffee date.
