Part 37

"The first performance of the evening is by Smt.Devyani Raizada and NK. Jhordar taaliyon se swaagat kiijiye, Naniji & NK" Gaurav announced with glee. His voice was almost drowned in the thunderous applause.

Ganesh looked at Anamika's face in wonder. "Naniji can dance?"

"At her age...?" Anamika was doubtful.

The stage went dark. Devyani Raizada announced, putting paid to all doubts,

"Badtameezee ek bimari hai,
Ek aisi bimari
Jo dheere dheere waqt ke saath
Budhaape mein badal jaati hai.
Main kehta hoon jab tak budhaapa nahi aata
Thodi badtameezee hi kar lete hai..."

Ganesh & Anamika looked at each other in astonishment. This was Naniji?

Arnav looked at the stage, hiding his smiling lips behind his fingers.

"Khulke hasiye na!" invited Khushi, clutching his hand in excitement.

Naniji in male attire and NK in a sari entered the stage.

The crowd gasped.

Ganesh almost had a heart attack, seeing Nani. She was wearing his clothes. Gaurav must have filched them for her. The coat hung below her knees.

Payal chuckled. NK was wearing her sari, a yellow one with big green flowers.

Paan main pudeena dekha,
Naak ka nageena dekha,
Chikni chameli dekhi,
Chikna kameena dekha,
Chaand ne cheater hoke cheat kiya toh
Saare taare bole gilli gilli akhaa...

Nani rocked the stage, ably seconded by NK who tittered and gyrated his hips in the most feminine way he could manage, pretending to shy away from Nani's advances.

Pa para para...

The children sitting on the floor jumped up and started dancing along with the pair on the stage.

Meri baat, teri baat
Zyada baatein boori baat,
Thaali mein katora leke
Aaloo bhat, Muri bhat,
Mere peeche kisi ne repeat kiya toh
Saala, maine tere muh pe maara mukka... Nani was very definite on that point.

Anamika placed her hand on her heart to calm it, and looked at Ganesh's stunned face. She burst out laughing.

NK modestly arranged his pallu to cover his exposed waist & sang, pointing at Naniji.

Ispe bhoot koi chadha hai
Theharna jaane naa...
Ab toh kya buraa, kyaa bhalaa hai
Fark pehchaane naa...
Zidd pakad ke khadaa hai kambakht,
Chhodna jaane naa... NK fanned himself with his pallu.

Khushi almost fell off the chair laughing. Arnav, Ganesh, & Anamika chuckled uncontrollably. Babuji, Amma, Akash, & Payal laughed. Buaji guffawed in between a "Hai Re Nandkisore!" Mami caught hold of Mamaji and swung him around in time to the music. Gaurav laughed and Scooby barked in excitement. The crowd clapped in time to the music.

Khushi looked at Arnav, a big smile on her face. His hand was in both of hers, her fingers curled tight around his. He was smiling at her, his chocolate eyes tender, loving her child-like enthusiasm and enjoyment of his Nani's dance.

Her smile dimmed slightly. She leaned towards him, her chest rubbing against his arm. Arnav tensed.

"Don't smile at me like that, Arnavji." she whispered in his ear.

"Like what?" he whispered back.

"Like Scooby smiles at a peda." Khushi said.

Arnav burst out laughing.

Maane naa...

Anamika looked at Ganesh's happy face. He felt her eyes on him, and smiled at her.

"Naniji is really something, isn't she?" he asked, unable to hold back his laughter.

"Never underestimate the power of a woman." Anamika teased.

"Never. Never after today." Ganesh laughed. "I want to know the name of her health drink."
