Epilogue

Our tiny heartbeat

The first whispering rays of the soft sun split the clouds and peeped out. Khushi stirred in her sleep and smiled as she felt him nuzzle the back of her neck and press against her entire length, moulding her soft curves to his hard ones. "Arnavji !"Khushi moaned. He immediately turned her to face him and claimed her lips hungrily. Every inch of her bare skin ignited to the fire emanating from his taut body.

She looked up at the ceiling mirror. His body was every woman's dream, perfectly sculpted and bronzed and she blushed as he whispered against her ear, "How's the view up there?" He leaned away slightly to catch the rising crimson on her face and smirked, "You have made good use of the mirror in the last two years haven't you Khushi?"

Khushi looked shyly into his teasing caramel ones. Wounding her arms around his neck she whispered " And I never tire, Arnavji...I love the view." Arnav's eyes darkened immediately with passion and he reclaimed her wet lips in a searing kiss. They moaned together, lips against lips, skin against skin, fire against fire.

The wail of their son rose above their moans.

"Oh no!" Arnav grunted and drew khushi closer to him.

Khushi giggled, "Arnavji chhodiye! Advay has got up. He is hungry."

"What about me? I am hungry too," Arnav retorted. But he loosened his hold on her and scowled.

Khushi giggled and pushed him away. She quickly got off the bed and bending down picked up Arnav's shirt from the pile on the carpet and put it on while calling out to her son, "Aati hoon! Aati hoon! (I am coming, I am coming!)" She saw the little one thrashing about in his baby cot and picked him up and kissing his soft rosy cheeks murmured "Sorry, sorry, rona mat mera bachha (Sorry, don't cry my son)! Her eight month old bundle of joy stopped crying immediately. He smiled lopsidedly at his mother and patted her face with his chubby hands and gurgled.

"He was not crying Khushi. Is there even one drop of tear in his eyes?" Arnav growled behind her. "And he can't be hungry. He had his feed half an hour back. Its all his acting to get your attention and draw you away from me!"

Little Advay spotted his father. Little brown eyes glared at big brown ones.

"However much you may glare at me let me tell you she is first mine and then yours!" Arnav folded his arms on his bare chest and challenged his eight month old son.

"Arnavji, aap bhi naa!" Khushi smiled at her husband. But her son pouted, his small pink lips trembled and he let out another loud scream.

"Arnavji, look, you have made him cry!" Khushi scolded her husband and hugged her son.

"Unbelievable! Arnav said rolling his eyes. "I am going for my morning walk!" And he strode into the washroom banging the door behind him. She winced.

She was singing mausam hai suhana' in lullaby style and putting her baby off to sleep when Payal tiptoed into the room and deposited a plate of jalebis on the bedside table. She looked at the mother and son duo and smiled at Khushi. " I can't believe my paagal sister can take care of a baby so well !"

"And I cant believe that you are such a pati ki bandi (husband's slave)that you meekly followed Akashji to the United States leaving me alone here! And you have come after six months now!," Khushi whispered at Payal in mock anger.

"That is why I made jalebis for you, to say sorry! "Payal grinned sheepishly. "Please do eat it after my cute nephew sleeps !" she whispered while leaving the room.

Khushi gently laid down her sleeping son on the SR bed and tucked an errant strand of his dark curly hair behind his ear. She sighed to see him sleeping so peacefully. She hated to have him sleep in the baby cot. But Arnavji would have it no other way. At least she had convinced Arnav not to shift him to the nursery with a governess to look after him. She had been backed in this decision by Naniji and Anjalidi.

Naniji had come from Lucknow to see her great grandson at the time of his birth and was so enchanted by "Chhotey's Chhotey" that she hadn't gone back to Sheeshmahal since. Khushi was most relieved when Anjali di came back to live in Raizada Mansion after Jijaji moved from Lucknow to a non-family station one month back. For Anjali her Chhotey's baby had a special place in her heart. "Mere jigar ka tukda" (A piece of my heart) she called her nephew lovingly. Knowing jolly well that Chhotey would be angry with Advay for messing up the house, on more than one occasion, she had hurriedly cleaned up the mess before Arnav arrived home from office. Anjalidi is my angel, Khushi mused.

And Anjalidi's sweet little daughter, Anubhuti, was totally besotted with her baby brother. Khushi smiled at the thought of little Anu. She had celebrated her one year old birthday recently and had offered the first piece of cake to her little brother, who duly spitted it out as he hated sweets like his father. Di had laughed her heart out. "Remember Chhotey you used to do the same when I used to feed you cake on my birthday! He is truly your son!"

That he is, Khushi mused looking lovingly at her son.He not had his father's good looks but also his anger! And I am sandwiched between the two!

A gift from my Guruji, ArshiHamesha (Faiqu)! Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!๐Ÿค—

Khushi stifled a yawn and glancing at her sleeping boy got up from the bed and walked towards the blue poolside. She picked up the watering jar lying in the corner of the garden and was watering the plants when she heard Arnavji shouting at the top of his voice, "Khushi ! Khushi!"

Hey Devi Maiyya! Khushi dropped the can and ran into the room immediately! Her eyes nearly popped out at the sight in front of her. Arnav was standing in front of the bed, one hand clenched tightly by his side and the other raking his hair. The bed sheet looked like a torn ship mast. The bed looked like it had been hit by a tornado. Crushed jalebis were strewn all over it. The syrup from the jalebis dripped down Arnav's side of the bed and in the middle of the mess Advay sat grinning in a pool of milk which he had successfully spilled from his bottle. He was holding the bottle high above his head threatening to hurl it with a mischievous look in his twinkling brown eyes.

"Nahi! Advay! Botal mat phekna! Gandi baat!" (No Advay! Don't throw the bottle!)Khushi said advancing towards him. She swiftly snatched the bottle from her son's hand. The little one pouted at first but then thinking it was a game he started clapping his hands in glee! Khushi ruffled his hair and said, "Arrey wah Addu beta! Aapko bhi jalebiyaan pasand hai!" (Oh great son Addu! You also like jalebis!)

Arnav gaped at the pair of mother and son in disbelief! "What the!" he exploded.

Arnav's angry voice reverberated in Raizada Mansion and Naniji , Anjali, Akash, Payal, Mamiji, Mamaji, and HP all came rushing into their room, shuddering to think who had angered Arnav Singh Raizada.

But when they saw what had made Arnav furious they could not stop laughing at the naughty antics of the youngest member of the family. Arnav's temper rose further when he saw that instead of punishing the culprit who had devastated the bed everyone was enjoying his handiwork.

He thundered at Khushi, "Khushi you have completely spoilt Advay! He has become such a brat! Look what he has done to the bed! I am glad both of you will be away for a few days! At least I can live in peace!" And with that he stormed off !

The family was shocked at Arnav's behavior. Khushi was in tears. Advay looked at his mother with a bemused look.

Naniji saw the tears rolling down Khushi's eyes and patting her on the head said, "Chhotey ko chhodo Khushi bitiya! Wo to kuchh bhi kehtey hain!"(Let Chhotey be, Khushi. He says whatever!) she muttered under her breath.

Anjali hugged Khushi and consoled her, "Khushiji asli baat to yeh hai ke aap kuchh din maikey jaa rahi ho na isi liye Chhotey tilmila rahein hain!" (Khushiji actually Chhotey is in a bad mood because you are leaving him and going to your apartment for a few days.)

Payal said excitedly, "Haan Khushi jaldi taiyaar ho jao. Amma Babuji aur Buaji Lucknow se aa gayye hain. Neha aur NK ki flight bhi aati hogi. Main Advay ko nehla kar aati hoon." (Yes Khushi get ready fast. Amma and Babuji have arrived from Lucknow. Neha and NK's flight will also be arriving soon. I will give Advay a bath.)

Mamiji announced, " I bhill givz chhota bitwa aaal myz parphumm.Thenz he bhill smell like rose seerrrups not jalebi seerrrups!" (I will give our small son all my perfumes. Then he will smell like rose syrup not jalebi syrup!)

"Good idea," Mamaji and Aakash grinned.

Khushi nodded her head and smiled at everyone. She loved her family. They were trying so hard to make her forget her husband's harsh words and cheer her up.

You want me and my son to go away Arnavji, I will, and never come back unless you beg me to, she vowed !

Khushi looked around her apartment fondly! Buaji and Amma were preparing dinner in the kitchen. They had arrived from Lucknow in the morning after a long journey but they insisted on preparing food without any help from the girls! Babuji was playing with his grandson. Neha and Payal were making a shopping list for Neha's wedding which was scheduled for next month. NK and Neha had initially planned to settle in Sydney. But after one year they had decided to return to India and get married finally. Khushi was glad Neha had suggested this get-together, especially since Payal had also come down from the U.S. But Arnavji had spoilt it all for her. To hell with him, Khushi thought!

NK flopped down besides Khushi and said, "Hey what's up? Why aren't you with the girls?"

"Nothing NK! Just a headache! " Khushi tried to smile. "So what do you think of my friend?" she poked him, changing the topic.

"Meri Neha!" NK grinned. "Hayye wo kitni bandar' hai na?!"(Neha is such a monkey!)

"Bandar nahi NK, sundar' !"(Not monkey' NK but beautiful') Khushi corrected him laughing. "If Neha hears you called her a monkey your wedding will be immediately cancelld NK!"

"I am deadwa!" NK held an imaginary pistol to his head.

The door bell rang. Khushi's heart lurched! What if Arnavji...! But it wasn't. It was Aakashji on his way back from office. Payal smiled shyly at him. Babuji welcome him inside the flat.

Khushi's vision blurred and she looked away. This apartment held such happy memories for her. This is where she had met him and he had broken her bed on their very first meeting.

She felt a tug at her dupatta. Her son was holding on to it and staring at her with a confused expression in his eyes. Khushi's eyes welled up. "I am okay Adu. We will never give in to that Laad Governor father of yours, right?" Advay chuckled at his mother and offered her his favourite red toy plane.

Arnav's SUV screeched to a halt in front of Khushi's apartment the next day. "Dammit! Khushi did not call me in the last two days!" Arnav banged the steering wheel of the SUV. "Enough is enough. She and that brat are coming home with me!"

But as he waited for someone to open the door his heart thudded in his rib cage. What if she refused to go with him! She was mad at him, he knew. But he was not at fault! The kid was a menace! And she refused to accept that! But he shouldn't have shouted at her and hurt her! He was really really sorry!

The door was opened by Buaji. She was delighted to see her favourite son-in-law. She admired and respected very few people and Arnav Singh Raizada was one of them. He did not embarrass the Guptas by discussing their financial problems with them. He just kept a tap on them silently. Everytime a crisis was unexpectedly solved the Guptas knew that their son- in- law was behind it. If they tried to thank him, he would shrug it off lightly with a disarming smile "Am I not your son?" he would say. Buaji often wondered if Khushi herself knew about her husband's generosity to her family.

"Hai re Nand Kishore! Arrey bahar kyon khare ho bitwa andar aao!" Buaji beamed. "Yeh dekho Advay kaun aaya hai? Tumre pita!" she tickled the baby in her arms. (Why are you standing outside, come in. See Advay who has come? Your father!)

Advay looked at his father warily.

Arnav ignored him. He ran his fingers through his hair and rasped, "Where is Khushi, Buaji?"

"Arey tumko nahi bolat rahi kkya? Wo... kya kahat rahe,... graaand shaaaping phistibhaaal..."(Oh didn't she tell you?)

"Grand shopping festival..." Arnav supplanted

"Haan haan wahi...Sab wahi gaye hain! Garima aur Shashi babua ko bhi pakad kar le gayen hain! " (Yes. Everyone has gone there. They have also dragged Garima and Sashi with them.

Suddenly she sniffed the air and shrieked, "Hayye re Nand Kishore! Humri daal jal gayi! Advay ko pakdo zara!"(Oh DM! The food is burning. Hold Advay please!) She thrust Advay at Arnav and dashed into the kitchen!

Beads of sweat gathered on Arnav's forehead as he clutched Advay in his arms.He had last held his baby when he was one month old. That is when the scary incident had taken place. He had lifted his son playfully off the bed, and the baby's head had lolled. Advay had cried out in shock and Khushi was besides herself with anxiety and grief sure that her baby's neck had snapped! Although the doctor assured them that their son neck had not broken, and it was common for the neck to loll if not supported at this stage, the incident shook them up. Khushi had become more protective towards her son and Arnav had vowed never to touch him again. He had insisted since then that Advay should sleep in a cot to reduce the chances of any accident.

"Are you okay kid? Am I hurting you?" Arnav asked his son in a hoarse whisper, his eyes anxious, reliving those terrifying moments.

Advay cocked his head to one side and stared at this strange man who was his father. Then he smiled and suddenly hugged him father tightly, his chubby little arms round his father's neck and his face buried in his strong shoulders.

Arnav was taken aback! Did he hurt him again he panicked! Kushi will be devastated! But Advay looked up shyly at his father and buried his face in the crook of his neck. That is when he heard the tiny heart pounding above his own. Dhak. Dhak, dhak...Like his and Khushi's! And something welled up inside him as his heart beat touched his son's. And all he wanted at that moment was to cocoon the soft little figure in his arms. To protect him. To keep him safe. To give him all the happiess in the world. Arnav swallowed hard. He had wasted so much time. He had so much to catch up with his son.

Buaji's voice wafted in as if from a far distance, "Hayye re Nandkishore! Ee dekkho! Yeh badmaash bachcha kaise chipak raha hai apne pita se! Jaise kitne din se bichhde huye ho!" (Look at this naughty boy .He is sticking to his father as if he is meeting him after ages)

When Buaji tried to draw him in her arms Advay refused. He held on to the lapel of his father's shirt and started sobbing loudly. Arnav's heart pounded as his son looked pleadingly into his eyes, tears streaming down his chubby white cheeks!

"Hush. You really want me to stay? I will stay a while. Okay?" Arnav said wiping his son's tears with his large hands.

Advay stopped crying immediately as if a tap had been turned off! He struggled in Arnav's arms, gesturing to him to put him down. Total drameybaaz like his mother, Arnav smirked! Arnav got down on his knees and let his son go. Advay crawled away and came back with his favourite red plane and offered it to his father. Arnav stared at it stupefied!

Buaji giggled and went to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee for Arnav. By the time Arnav finished drinking his coffee, Advay had piled up all his toys at his father's feet!

"What a mess he is creating!" Arnav was apologetic.

"Koi baat nahi babua. Advay tumse khelna chahta hai!" (Doesn't matter.Advay wants to play with you!)

"Unbelievable! He expects me to play with these...?" Arnav grimaced at his son.

His phone rang. It was Aman. "Sir, I have called you to remind you about the meeting with Mr. Khanna."

Arnav was about to reassure Aman that he would reach office in time when a big blue ball landed on his Hermes shoes!

Arnav looked at the ball and then at the expectant brown glowing eyes of his son.

"Uhh...Aman! Please postpone the meeting by an hour. I have to...well, play volleyball with my son!"

Aman stared at the disconnected line and scratched his ears. Had he heard what he had heard! He smiled slowly. "Good for you, ASR!" he muttered to himself.

Arnav missed the meeting. He did not realize how time passed playing with his son and laughing at his funny antics. Advay was in his element trying to show off to Arnav every trick in his book. But at the same time there was something in his father's expression and soft commanding voice that made it clear to little Advay when to stop.

When Buaji brought out his milk bottle he snatched it eagerly from her hand and held out his little arms to his father. Arnav smiled and picked up his boy in his arms. Advay gurgled happily and started drinking hungrily from the bottle. In no time, he finished his feed and his eyes closed slowly, drowsily as he went to sleep contentedly in his father's lap. Arnav dropped a gentle kiss on his son's forehead as he handed him to Buaji thanking her.

Two years ago he had walked out of the apartment having made a connection with his son's mother. Two years later he strode out of the same apartment having made a connection with her son. His heart brimmed with sunshine that shone in his son's brown honey eyes. He wished his Maa had seen their son. But her blessings are surely with Advay as they are with Khushi, he thought.

While everyone laughed happily at Buaji's tale of father and son bonding, Khushi was not only shocked but angry. "You betrayer!" she admonished her son who looked at her from under his thick curly eyelashes sheepishly, "Didn't we agree that we would not let the Laad Governor have his way! Have you forgotten how he shouted at us?!"

So when Arnav called Khushi in the night, she lambasted him, "How dare you come here and brainwash my son!"

"Brainwash? Don't be overdramatic Khushi. And by the way he is also my son and I want both of you to come home."

"Oh do you? Then why did you not call me even once in the past two days?" Khushi raged.

" I can say the same about you Khushi, can't I?"

"Yes, maybe. But I did not shout at you in front of everyone. And I did not say I would be at peace if you left RM!" Khushi shouted at him.

Arnav was quiet for a second. Then he said softly, "Khushi, I am sorry. You know I didn't mean that! I want nothing more than to have my wife and son with me at home."

"Too bad! Because we are not going to RM...ever! Khushi banged down the phone.

The next day Arnav said casually to Anjali at the breakfast table "Di, why don't you arrange for one of those poojas of yours in the evening today."

"Pooja? Since when have you become interested in poojas, Chhotey?" Anjali gaped at him in astonishment.

"What the! Di! I thought you would be happy and..." Arnav trailed off.

Naniiji smiled. "Haan haan, yeh to achhi baat hai. Par aaj sham ko, Chhotey?" (Yes yes, that's a good suggestion. But today evening, Chhotey?)
Don't worry Naniji, Di! I wil see to it that all pooja arrangements are done to your liking and within the stipulated time. Please invite everyone. I will send Aman to take care of everything."

Di winked at Nani. "Chhotey, who should we invite? Khushiji and family for starters. But will they come?"

"Why not?" Arnav's head jerked up in anger.

Arnav scunched his eyes at Di and Naniji who were trying hard not to burst into laughter and left the breakfast table in a huff!

As soon as Babuji announced that Naniji had invited all of them to a pooja at the Raizada Mansion in the evening, Khushi knew that Arnav was behind this somehow. She fumed all the way to Raizada Mansion. But the moment she stepped into her husband's home her anger fizzled. Her heart swelled with joy as the whole mansion was decorated with tiny fairy lights, red roses, and stars. He had got the house done up like this especially for her, she knew. But he was nowhere in sight though the rest of his family was there...welcoming her and her family.

Panditji began the pooja as soon as everyone had settled, down. Advay and Anu were very excited. The part they enjoyed most was hurling rice grains into the fire and were rather disappointed when the pooja came to an end.

As soon as the pooja was over Mamiji got the opportunity to show off the family heirloom given to her by Naniji on her wedding fifty years ago.."How bootiphool no? Ammaji give it to me and I will give it to my beti in law, " she gushed, smiling at Naniji and Payal. Khushi winked at her Jiji. She was so happy that the relationship between the two was improving. When Akashji had announced his decision to marry Payal, the greatest ruckus had been created by Mamiji. But now it seemed things were on mend.

NK remarked suddenly, Hey Mamiji aap ki angrezi to bahut sukkad gayi hai! (Mamiji your English has shrunk' very much!)

"Sukkad nahi, NK, sudhar gayi hai!"(Not shrunk, NK, but improved!) Everyone screamed at NK in unison.

"Par tumri Hindi kab sudhregi NK?" (But when will your Hindi improve NK?) Buaji asked and everyone guffawed.

As everyone laughed merrily, the back of Khushi's neck tingled and Anjali confirmed her suspicion,

"Chhotey! You here! At this time!"

"Hello everyone! Yes Di!" His voice washed over her and she felt dizzy. "I have come for an important file!"

Advay who had been playing with Anu squealed at the sound of his father's voice. Arnav went down on his toes and hugged his son and his niece.

"I will be back to play with you kids later, okay champ?" he ruffled his son's hair and straightening himself walked into Khushi's frame. Khushi's heart raced like a teenager who had just seen her first crush. To all practical purposes he was! Their eyes locked and Kushi was hypnotized. She couldn't believe that he could have this effect on her after two years of marriage and a baby.

"Khushi come upstairs and help me search for the file." And with that he briskly climbed the stairs to their bedroom upstairs!

"Haan haan jaiyye na Khushiji(Yes, yes go Khushiji)," Anjali said with a straight face.

"Haan jao bitiya (Yes go daughter)," Naniji backed Anjali.

Neha, NK , Payal and Aakash grinned at her openly.

Khushi was about to protest. Then she shrugged her shoulders and walked slowly towards the stairs. It took every ounce of her will power not to run up the stairs to her husband.

She closed the room behind her and looked around but could not see him. She approached the bed curiously. It was as good as new. Mr. Sharma of Only Beds' had assured Arnav that his bed would become as good as new. And he was true to his word. Mr. Sharma had become such an important part of their lives, she smiled.

The washroom door clicked open and Arnav stepped out, only in his trousers. Shirtless. His toned muscles glistened with droplets of water and Khushi gulped. The desire to touch his taut lean body hit her hard. As he advanced towards her, his brown eyes oozing with desire she backed away not willing to give in to him, not yet! And suddenly she hit the edge of the bed and toppled over, bouncing on the bed. Arnav covered the distance between them in the blink of an eye, and was on top of her, pinning her down.

"That's where I like you my wife, on my bed!" Arnav smirked.

"This is not fair Arnavji. You took advantage of my fall! What about the file?" Khushi pouted trying to push his hot body off her.

"There is no file, Khushi.you know that," he said smirking at her, "And all is fair in love and war isn't it?"

"And what are you making now, love or war?" Khushi rolled away and sat up on the bed.

"I am sorry for making war Khushi. Advay has forgiven me. Now I ask for your forgiveness. I admit I was a jerk." Arnav looked at her beseechingly.

Khushi studied his handsome pleading face for a moment and smiled "Okay, I will forgive you if you do as I say."

"I love you Khushi, Anything for you, I promise." Arnav whispered huskily.

Khushi winked at him and got up from the bed. She detached the pin of the pallu of her saree and let it slip away. Arnav gaped at her and his breath hitched as he took in her exposed creamy skin and her heaving breasts. Khushi slowly pulled out her saree and threw the flimsy material away. Then she discarded the rest of her layers one by one. All the while her eyes were on her husband. She loved the effect she was having on her Laad Governor. He was ecstatic and in a frenzy to see this new bold side of Khushi and it was showing!

"Khushi come here," Arnav's voice was a bare whisper laced with desire.

But Arnavji I need to take a bath."

Arnav's eyes lit up instantly.

"Hey, don't get me wrong! Just me! Alone! But you can watch! You promised me you would do as I say!" Khushi giggled at the stunned expression on his face

"What the!" Arnav growled. "I get it! You are doing this deliberately to get back at me!"

Khushi blew a flying kiss at him and shimmered towards the washroom.

Like bee to honey Arnav followed her and allowed her to torture him as she took a slow shower. Enjoying his rising distress and desire, she turned off the faucet . She patted herself dry languidly. And then tiptoed up to him. Arnav stared transfixed at her , waiting for some more punishment.

Wounding her arms round his neck, she ordered, "Take me to our bed now."

Arnav was in a daze. He followed her command and lifting her easily in his strong arms walked into the room, laying her on the bed gently, his eyes glazed, not knowing what to do next.

Khushi pulled him down over her and running her hand through his thick wavy hair looked up mischievously into his eyes, "Come on Arnavji what are you waiting for?" she murmured against his lips, lightly brushing them with her pink ones.

"What the!" A tormented groan escaped his lips! Unable to control himself any longer he claimed her lips and her core simultaneously! Every cell in Khushi's body and soul was filled with pure ecstasy! Khushi gasped and pleasured against him, opening herself up to his urgency and demanding all of him and more...Arnav chanted her name riding rough-shod through fire and water. In alternating seconds Arnav and Khushi made love and war like only they could. Waves of sexual tension burst around them in leaping flashes of red orange flames, exploding too soon in a flash of a blissful pool of desire!

As their hearts beat in unison to the same rhythm of love, Arnav removed the stray strand of hair from her flushed face and whispered, "I touched Advay, Khushi and he hugged me. Do you know Advay's heart also beats in the same rhyhm as ours?! "

Khushi was thrilled, "Really Arnavji ?! I am so happy! I told you there was nothing to fear! And his heart beats like ours, doesn't it ?! After all we created his tiny heartbeat... together.

"We created his tiny heartbeat together," Arnav repeated after her, savouring each word. He nuzzled her breast where her heart was and placed gentle wet kisses on it. Khushi dug her fingers in his hair and closed her eyes in pleasure.

Someone knocked outside the door.

"Arrey Chhotey, Khushiji, everyone is waiting for you downstairs. Did you find the file at last?" Anjali giggled outside their door.

Khushi looked at Arnav in embarrassment and clamped her hand to her O' shaped mouth

Arnav smirked and winked at Khushi, and replied to his Di's query "Yes Di! We did! We found it on our special bed! Together!"
