Chapter 1
She watched her dad sneeking behind a pillar talking to a boy who was just little elder than her barely a 2-4 years difference. Her dad was beaming in happiness, proud of her cousin doing well in the 10th Board Exams probably. He gifted him with money and granted to give him what he wished for.
'Kriya beti, tum yahaan kya kar rahi ho?', the maid cooed and Kriya turned around asking her to be silent with actions.
She stared back at the duo and her eyes glinted with a hope and she saw them walk out.
'Would dad talk to me and be the same like that if I get good marks too?', she questioned amusing the lady.
That lady felt sadness consume her heart but she smiled at the thought of little girl.
'Zaroor', she lied caressing her cheek.
'Chalo..tum abhi tak lunch bhi nahi kiya', the lady told.
She awaited with a bated breath for her results which was to be announced in few minutes. She was nervous. She rubbed her wet palm against her dress often. She had none to share the anticipation running through her veins.
She checked her result in few minutes and thanked her gods for supporting her and giving her a chance.
She was happy. She smiled, laughed, called up her friends? No. She wanted to go to her dad first. She want to show him. She want him to be happy because of her. She wanted him to speak lovingly to her. She wanted to be treated like how he treated her cousin boy.
'Kriya...you are making me late', he spoke or warned to be precise.
'Just one minute', she asked though she got scared for once. 'SEE', she beamed taking out the paper from behind and giving it to him with a smile that never left her face.
His eyes scanned her marks and he just reacted with 'hmm'.
'You could have informed me later too', he muttered plainly giving her back and walked off leaving her hopes she kept since years shattered.
He never was good to her. He never spoke to her lovingly. He never spended with her. No. Actually he did and that was when he wanted to take his frustration out on how her mom died giving birth to her and how he always wanted a son.
She was sad nevertheless she learnt a lesson. Later, she studied because she wanted to achieve for herself rather than having sleepless nights of studies and worries only to impress her dad.
Dad just can't do this. Why am I even not surprised?! He still wants to get me married inspite of my protests and requests to wait for one more year. Can't he wait? Why are you cruel to me god?, she thought blaming the almighty for her life.
All she ever had in her life was hardships, pain and some more. Studies and college made her escape into a world of happiness with friends and she had a goal infront of her set but it would end abruptly if she gets married and her studies end off.
Kriya smiled though her heart screamed sadness all over. Her house was crowded with people after years.
'Kriya..you have to get ready by the time the groom's family comes. Come on, get ready', her mother's sister voiced pulling Kriya into her room where many girls awaited and everything were set. Her dress, her ornaments and all necessities.
Kriya stared at herself in the mirror. She couldn't bring herself to smile inspite of girls around her saying, 'You look perfect and only the smile is missing'. She faked a smile for their sake. She glanced at her image which looked so unlike to her. She didn't like what she was wearing. A ghaghra which exposed her waist and the ornaments. They annoy her. 'The groom's family just wants to see me and go', she wanted to scream knocking sense into the people around. Why are they making hustle of such small things? is out of her understanding.
The loud talks around minimally turned into whispers around. She sighed. The family who were coming to see her might have come.
Kriya was shushed into the hall and a tray with tea cups was given to her mid way. She didn't make eye contact with any. She just lowered her head while giving to all of them including the one who was supposed to be her groom. She wanted him to reject her. After she was done giving them, her father called out to her lovingly. She felt so though a fake one. 'Kriya, come and sit here', he called out with so much fake love for his daughter patting his side. Kriya sat beside him and only turned to glance at him. He was smiling and it didn't look fake. Maybe he was too happy that he won't have a baggage holding him back, she thought and lowered her eyes to nothing in particular.
'Disciplined Girl', a lady voiced and Kriya bit back the urge to laugh but just rolled her eyes slightly mincing at her words.
No. She wasn't disciplined. She wasn't interested. Not even a bit.
She wanted them to find faults in her and eventually reject her.
Duh! Who knows if her father brought another family who was interested only in business and money. He would definitely not mind giving money to shoo her off.
Lies. Pure blatant lies.
She avoided the gazes on her listening to her dad's skillful lies without hesitation. She knows cooking. Lie. She is a homely girl. Lie. She is willing to be a house wife Dharam Patni after getting married. Biggest Lie.
She can't speak a word against her father but she wanted to break this marriage by hook or crook but she was helpless.
The talks continued and going by them she understood that their family wanted a lamb who would sacrifice her life and become a home maker for them. Maybe they are rich too. She didn't hear a word of the boy who was supposed to marry her. He can't speak up too? Is he one of the business man who got tired of life without girls and waiting to hit on one? She cursed her thoughts. Excusing herself at almost end where she understood it was almost finalised, she straited off without minimal gestures ignoring her dad's cold look as she retreated to her room.
She took off the heavy ornaments and threw them on bed. She removed that slight pins they kept in her hair and kept it on mirror stand. She wanted to change into something comfortable but her cupboard was locked and maybe one of her relative was having the key. She sighed. She made her way to washroom to cleanse up the tons of makeup on her face, eyes. She was relieved when she felt the weight eventually go and it made her less annoyed.
He excused himself after minutes and followed her way. In no way he wanted to marry a passionless girl whose life would revolve around only him. He had a strong dislike towards girls of those types but he was helpless to his parents wills too. He just sat there without uttering a word.
He noticed her when she came. He could see she was full of make over from head to toe which made him want to literally groan and storm out. She looked like nothing that could interest him except her physical allure. She was thin and she had curves and her waist was sexy with that gold chain she wore. His eyes gazed up to glance her completely but her eyes never met his nor did he get a chance to see her face properly because her dad called her and made her sit beside him and in no way he could check her out more with her dad sitting in between them.
He made a note in mind to speak to her. Rudely or sweetly. He would prefer any but he had to call this off. He couldn't just marry a girl because her body was tempting.
Kriya sat on the bed devoid of feelings. She hugged her legs closer to her resting her head on it.
He fumbled a little, confused with the way that led to her room. When he did reach the right one, he stood at the open door. He couldn't see her face since she was looking out opposite side. She didn't look really that bad as he judged her earlier. She could make a good wife on bed with lights off. He mentally slapped himself at the stupid thoughts which he got from his friends. They had the exact thoughts running in their mind when they check a girl. He was becoming like them when he didn't want to. He groaned. Having no mood to just walk in disturbing her, he knocked the door slightly but she made no move. She was lost in thoughts, he concluded. He tried to call her by name. What was her name? He remember her mom chanting the name many times. 'Kriya', he said but it turned out a whisper. He voiced aloud her name for the second time but a little audible this time.
She turned around and got down when she heard a voice calling her and for a second and more, her eyes twinkled with a hope and happiness.
'Is anyone with you?', she questioned just to make sure he has come alone.
'No. Why?', he answered amused by her words.
She sighed and had a taint smile.
'You can come in', she mumbled and he did follow her words. Supressing her formed smile, Kriya walked to the door and closed it from inside and all he could do was to stare at her.
She looked different and more natural. Her hair was free and she was Beautiful. Her eyes had a charm. She looked way and much more better now. He couldn't shift his glare from her. From all the ornaments she wore before, she had only that thin chain on her neck and nothing else but it still didn't make him want to make her his wife. No matter how attractive she looked, he couldn't buy himself to get married to a home maker who has nothing to look ahead for her in her life apart from being a maid to him. Personal Maid he could cringe at how it sounded but that exactly what defined girls who wanted marriage and nothing else.
Her actions surprised him and it did impress him a little because she wasn't all blushing and shy lowering her eyes like she did earlier. She walked past him and locked the door with whatever intention it was and he did like that move of her.
She made her way and stood infront of him. For a minute, he could understand she wants to speak so much but is thinking about the right way to put them in words. 'mmm..', she mumbled cursing herself for not knowing his name. 'Your name?', she asked nervously after she failed recollecting his name from what her father mentioned. 'Reyaansh. You can call me Rey', he said with a smile. He did find it familiar that even he had a problem remembering her name.
'Reyaansh. I...I wanted to let you know...', she trailed nervously. 'Whatever my dad said about me...all that...all that were lies', she spoke letting them out with a relief.
A glimpse of disbelief was in his eyes. It almost felt like she accomplished what she want. Her eyes gleamed happily.
'Why didn't you say it there directly?', he asked.
If she could have said the same what she had just voiced out to him then her mom without a second thought would cancel this marriage for lieing and also for her own reasons.
'Because my dad wants to get me married. I don't want to marry. I want to study. I have one more year to complete my studies', she explained.
Her words took time to sink in. He stared at her like he was eyeing his treat. His eyes wandered on her. He couldn't exactly put his feelings at the moment in a word. All he ever wanted in his life was a girl like her. He couldn't help himself but pull her closer by the waist making her gasp and her eyes turned wider.
'But I want to', he voiced huskily and she was confused, he could say. 'Fine. You will get this one cancelled but your dad will become more outraged and he will find another one for you. He will take you away and you can't even convince him or your dad next', he spoke glancing down at her.
She looked up at him confusion brewing up.
'Kriya...see...I am willing to marry a girl like you. No. Actually not like the girl you showed me out there but the one whom I am seeing right now', he uttered looking at her in eyes. 'I will help you to continue your studies', he said. 'You can trust me on that and I just need one favour from you', he ended. She only glanced at him speechless with his words and actions. He smiled and whispered, 'Just keep whatever you said to me as a secret.' with a wink. Leaning in he kissed her lips, more like a peck and slowly traced off his hands on her. Giving her a smile, he left her rooted to the ground.
She was in a pool of emotions. She was happy. She felt too good with whatever he did to her and the smile on her lips never seemed to fade.
One of the best moments of her life. Getting married to him. She felt loved. He made her feel special with his gestures, kisses and care. He whispered words of promises, trust on the night of her submission to him. She felt complete with him. He filled the void in her life. He even rubbed away the tears that escaped her eyes and hugged her tightly stroking her hair just before they slept.
It was her first day in her second home. She moved closer to the warmth rubbing her eyes to wake up. She pouted. She felt like cuddling and sleeping for some more time but not today. She was told about rasam(s) to be followed. She rubbed her eyes sleepily opening them slowly. She smiled contently. A white blanket hugged her body and his hand was above it around her and his face was gently nuzzling her neck. She glanced at him and her back of palm caressed his face tucking away the hair that fell on his eyes slightly. She leaned in and kissed his forehead with a smile. She slowly held his arm and placed it away. Taking her clothes from down. She dressed herself and got a bath. Wearing a chudidar, she got downstairs.
She was a stock of laughter for his family as she shot glares in his direction.
'We know you don't know cooking much. Rey told us everything. Its just that he didn't want us to react nor did he want your father to think of undoing this marriage and commitments', his mom chuckled and his dad and relatives laughed more.
They burst out into laughter watching her faces when they ordered menus to be cook by her.
'You could have told me', Kriya whispered slowly not sparing a look at him.
'I would have missed all this if I had in advance', he said laughing.
She glared at him and he didn't even bother to stop.
'Kriya...Rey also told you want to continue your studies. You can do. You are also like my daughter. Don't hesitate to tell anything', his mom said caressing her hair and gave her a hug and Kriya smiled whole heartedly.
'WHATTT?', Rey's dad yelled startled.
'You heard it right. Kriya bagged a placement in her college and her salary is 1.5 lakh per month', Rey spoke in a high pitched voice hugging Kriya from behind.
'Highest salary in her whole area', Rey's dad commented and Rey rolled his eyes with the comparison.
'I am so proud of you', he whispered in his ear kissing her cheek from behind.
'KRIYA...WE WANT A TREAT', one cousin demanded and others whined the same.
'Fine. A treat today evening?', Kriya said much to their happiness.
'YES', they shouted and their house was filled with celebrations.
Words spread like fire;
'You might be so proud of your daughter. You are so lucky', Rey's dad beamed on the phone clueless to how Kriya was treated by her dad.
'Yes. I am. I got to know.', he said.
The constant remindance did no good for him. He felt himself consumed with guilty every passing day.
He danced with joy and happiness though not literally whenever his relatives sons did good but he never encouraged or bothered to make her happy when she ranked and got merits.
Becoz she was a Girl.
'I will talk to you later. I am busy at the moment', he lied.
'KRIYA. KRIYAAA', Rey shouted from downstairs calling her. 'Rey. I am folding our clothes. Don't shout and tell me', she queried from up. 'COME DOWN ONCE', he yelled unable to hide his excitement. He knew she would be so happy. Surprised with his words and tone, she came out of the room and looked down and found her dad standing a tad bit nervous she could figure out from how his hands were patched.
It felt good to see him after more than a year. She just adjusted her looks once before straiting down and she came face to face with her dad. She refrained herself from hugging and she couldn't even speak any words.
'Dad', was all she could say.
Rey excused himself and went to the kitchen making sure he was overhearing the conversation. Rey knew her father wanted a lone place and time with his daughter and he pretended to give one.
'I am...I am really happy for you', he uttered.
Kriya smiled.
'Sit down dad', she offered but he raised a hand indicating a No.
'Kriya. I know and I realised how bad I treated you...I am sorryyy', he voiced and Kriya could feel the guilt in his words.
'Don't dad. Lets forget the past. Maybe you didn't make me feel special or made me extremely happy but you are one of the reasons where I am today', she explained.
'I am So..', he tried to say again but she interrupted, 'Please don't say that'.
She hugged his dad and for the first time he didn't think before reciprocating the gesture. 'I am so sorry', he whispered again stroking her hair lovingly.
'Coffeee', Rey voiced aloud walking in the room.
Kriya made her dad seat on the couch while she gave the one cup to Rey. He nodded in negation and said, 'Its for you'. 'You made it?', Kriya asked bemused and Rey nodded excitedly with a smile.
Kriya's dad just adored watching them.
