Chapter 27
Chapter 27
The days passed quickly, Maan hadn’t avoided Geet, and they’d shared more than a few kisses in the days that followed.
At work, they remained colleagues and barely came across each other as Maan was tied up with several projects that ran at the same time and close to their closure. He wanted to finish them up for the annual party that was soon going to be held.
Since the confrontation with Sasha, Geet noticed the design department manager always eyeing her across the rooms in meetings or across the cafeteria. Sasha had even checked up on her work and asked for updates from Adi on her progression. Viren pointed out to Geet to check her work several times before she saves it and emails it across because one mistake could cost her especially with Sasha on her tail.
Geet did just that. Before she’d send across any reports or complete any tasks, she checked it thrice and have Viren quickly skim through.
She did not want to give Sasha the satisfaction of any mistake which would lead to her being fired.
Maan had handed the reigns over to Sasha to set up the annual party with her assistants as always and left her to do it. He only reminded her that he expected the best to show his appreciation for the staff.
“We’re going shopping today, Geet” Naintara informed. The ladies were sat eating lunch and the party was only a couple of days away.
“Why?”
“Because you obviously need something really nice for the party” she stated factually. “You can’t wear work clothes nor jeans. It has to be formal and sexy”.
“And it doesn’t say a thing like that in the invite” Geet pointed out.
“There’s a silent dress code – it doesn’t need to be said” Naintara responded. “Dadima, you’re going to be coming as well”.
“Of course,” Dadima agreed nodding her head. “Naintara is right, bete. We need to choose something formal for you”.
Geet looked at them unsurely and nodded slowly. “Okay. If you both know what you’re doing” she agreed and looked up smiling when Maan and Dev walked across joining them.
“Finally” Dadima sighed heavily. “Aap dono na… Sirf kaam aur kaam… Dev has already rubbed off his workaholism on Naintara. Geet, please don’t let Maan do the same to you” she expressed.
“Dadima” Naintara laughed pretending to be surprised.
Geet chuckled and said, “Dadima, I assure you I will not be like Saru”.
“Geet” Maan scowled.
“What?” she smiled innocently.
“Khair, Geet… Are you parents going to be coming?”
“Dadima, I did speak to them and given them the invite. Mama said she’s still not sure. Papa had fallen ill recently and he hasn’t recovered to his 100 percent” she explained.
“Oh, no. Pass them my best wishes. I’ll call them after dinner today to check in as well” she responded.
Geet nodded with a smile.
“Where is the invite by the way this time?” Dev inquired curiously.
“At the Mehta’s hotel. We’re booked in their ball room” Maan answered.
“We should get a hotel room” Naintara informed her husband.
“Are you planning to stay over?” Geet asked.
“Possibly, but its more for us to change our clothes before the party” Naintara responded. “We’re still working so we’ll be coming straight from work”.
“Geet, you’re working as well aren’t you?” Dadima quizzed.
“Ji, dadima. I was going to change in the office bathroom” she said.
“You can’t change in an office bathroom – no matter how clean it might be. We’re not taking any risks with the dress we’ll be choosing” Naintara intervened shaking her head. “Dev, can you book us and Geet a room? Veerji, you’re going to change at the hotel as well, right?”
Maan only hummed not really paying attention to whatever it was they were discussing. He was tied up with the emails that kept flashing up on his screen.
After lunch, Naintara and Dadima dragged Geet to go shopping whilst Maan headed to the office even though it was the weekend. He wanted to get ahead on his workload, so he can enjoy the party with his colleagues and clients.
Day of the party
Geet arrived at the hotel holding her plastic bag which held her dress. She had initially been reluctant about the dress, but it had grown on her the more she’d seen it and admired it. Dadima and Naintara had gushed and loved it on her. She trusted their choice as they’d helped her adjust and settle in this new life with them.
Geet walked across to the desk giving them her name, but the receptionist looked confused and apologised as she could not see her name anywhere.
“Dev Khurana booked it for me, can you please check again?” she urged tapping her fingers on the desk impatiently. “He booked 2 rooms, one for himself and the other for me”.
“Ma’am, there is no Geet Vihaan for this room though. Do you know what other name he could have put it under?” she asked.
“Why don’t you tell me, and I can just confirm it?” she suggested.
“Sorry ma’am. That’s going to be a breach of data protection. You need to give me the name and I can then confirm it”.
“Did he put under Geet Khurana?”
The receptionist looked at her blankly.
“Maan Khurana?” she asked.
“Yes, that’s the name. I’ll now call them and confirm before I give you a set of keys” the receptionist responded picking up the phone and making a call.
Geet glanced at her watch and tapped her fingers again. She tensed when Sasha approached the desk and addressed the second receptionist at the desk.
“Here’s your keys ma’am. I’ve spoken to…”
“Its confirmed, right?” Geet cut in afraid the woman was going to spill out with Maan’s name with Sasha standing just a few feet away.
“Yes” she smiled. “Would you like to be shown the way?” she asked.
“No, thanks. What floor?”
“4th floor”
Geet nodded thanking her and turned to leave when Sasha turned with her own set of keys and raised her brows questioningly.
“Geet?”
“Sasha” Geet replied.
“Excuse me?”
“We’re out of the office and clocked out” she pointed out. “You’re not my boss here”.
Sasha narrowed her eyes looking her up and down. “How is it that you can afford a room here?” she asked.
“I can ask you the same question” Geet countered. “Your manager’s salary isn't that much that you can afford it. Anyway, I’m going to be late so I can’t be chatting” she continued without giving Sasha a chance to counter and walked away with her set of keys. Geet pressed the number 4 on the elevator and stepped back when Sasha followed her inside and pressed on the 5th floor button.
“You might be off the clock now, Geet but come Monday. I’ll be one of your managers and you should remember that. Try not to piss me off” Sasha murmured.
Geet kept silent until she came to the fourth floor and the doors opened. She glanced over her shoulder at Sasha whilst holding one side of the door so they didn’t close. “I don’t even need to do anything. You’re always salty and that too because you think someone is trying to bump you down the ladder of becoming Mrs Khurana. If you haven’t moved up in 5 years, what makes you think you’re taking the spot beside MK?” she questioned stepping off the elevator without waiting for a response.
Sasha looked like she was about to burst into flames and ready to blast her when the doors closed. Geet smiled inwardly having gotten that off her chest and walked towards the room booked for her. Inside the elevator Sasha was cursing Geet and smacking the steeled walls with her palms and curling her hands into fists.
Geet entered the room with her key card and looked around to see if Maan had arrived. It seemed he hadn’t. She placed her dress on the bed toeing off her heels and headed into the washroom to quickly rinse off the days grime. She pulled her hair into a knotted bun at the top of her head so her hair didn’t get wet, she couldn’t be getting it wet and dry in the timeframe she had to be ready.
After the quickest shower in her lifetime, she grabbed a towel from the railing and wrapped it around her body stepping out of the shower and walked out.
Geet dug into her handbag pulling out her make up. She first applied the moisturiser across her skin then her deodorant. Once she was dry, she slipped into her gown sans her bra as the dress was backless with tiny straps criss-crossing at her back.
Geet then grabbed the hotel robe and slipped into it so she could apply her makeup and do her hair without staining her gown.
Geet settled for smokey effect with her eyes with navy eyeshadow and rose-coloured lipstick which went beautifully with her fair coloured skin tone. She brushed through her messy curls and dutch braided either side and knotted into a bun at the back of her neck. She picked up the comb and tugged a few curls and letting it cascade down on either side of her cheeks to frame her face.
She paused briefly hearing the juggling of the doorknob and the faint beep of her key card being used. She looked over her shoulder and smiled seeing Maan entering the room.
“Oh, you’re still here?” Maan asked as he closed the door and unbuttoned his blazer.
“Just finished” she replied standing up and untied the tie of her robe. Geet carefully slipped out of her robe and placed it on the bed. Unaware of Maan’s eyes focused on her. His eyes were locked on her and unable to move. The dress she’d selected hugged her figure deliciously and the slit showcasing her thigh had him aroused.
He shifted unsteadily and cleared his throat.
Geet looked over at him as she’d finished slipping into her heels and grabbed her clutch. “I’ll leave you to get ready and see you down there” she said with a gentle smile.
Maan only nodded as he was unable to form the words.
Geet walked past him halting when he clasped his hand around her forearm stopping her, he turned facing her and said, “You look… beautiful”.
Geet’s heart skipped a beat. She smiled faintly and looked up at him.
Maan brushed her loose curls and dipped his head. He pressed his lips against her lips gently, he pecked her a couple of times before he pulled away not wanting to ruin her effort on putting her makeup on.
Geet beamed and bit on her lower lip and chuckled. “You’ve got lipstick” she muttered and wiped her thumb across his lips. “Do I still look ok?”
“You’re still beautiful” he replied.
Geet chuckled and patted his chest. “I’ll see you downstairs now” she told him and rechecked herself in the mirror. He did kiss her quite carefully she noted and smiled once more before walking out of the room.
Naintara whistled when Geet entered and walked across to her.
“Really, Naintara?” she whispered.
“Did Veerji show his appreciation for such a beautiful wife?” she murmured conspiratorially.
“Naintara…” Geet nudged and laughed shaking her head.
“Geet bete…” Dadima said returning to Naintara’s side. “You look beautiful”.
“Right, dadima?” Naintara grinned. “I just said the same”.
“Thank you, both” Geet responded. “You’re both looking just as gorgeous”.
Dadima chuckled. “Thanks bete…”
“Namaste, Savitri ma’am” Sasha appeared at their side smiling brightly.
Dadima turned her head looking at her and smiled nodding her head.
“Geet, what are you doing here?” Sasha asked giving her an innocently wide smile. “Do you know who this is?” she added narrowing her eyes at Geet for a second.
“Geet and I are friends, Sasha” Naintara intervened. “Any issues?”
Sasha plastered a fake smile shaking her head. “No, of course not. I just… I don’t think you’d like our trainees harassing you at a party”.
Naintara seemingly pondered and said, “Geet is not harassing us, on the other hand… I don’t remember us inviting you to join us”.
Sasha’s cheeks reddened in embarrassment. She noticed Dadima hiding a subtle smile and Geet averting her eyes and looking like she was trying hard not to laugh.
“Excuse me…” she muttered and turned on her heels stalking away cursing Geet.
