Chapter 24
A Twist of Events Ch. 22
Anjali stood up. She pushed Arnav on his chest with her fists,
"TELL ME WHAT THIS IS!" She shouted unwilling to register what was on the piece of paper.
"IT'S A PATERNITY TEST!...SHYAM CLAIMS THAT HE IS SHAILA'S FATHER!!" Arnav shouted as he pushed off her fists.
He heard a collective gasp from the family members, followed by an eerie silence enveloping them.
Naniji rushed to them and pulled out the paper from Anjalis hands. There were test results done on Shyam and Shaila, and the result claimed Shyam to be Shailas father and Khushi to be her mother. She teared up.
"No...chote tell me this isn't true...tell me this is a misunderstanding. Shaila...shaila is yours."she said hysterically, tears poring out of her eyes.
"Naniji...it isn't true. Its not true. Shaila is mine. My daughter. Not the daughter of that bas***d"
"But..but these tests"
Arnav took the paper from nanis hands and went towards his work area.
"Hello Aman" he said as he dialed his number on his cell phone
"Im scanning you a document right now. Investigate it right now and tell me its validity. Go research the hospital, the doctors, everything. I want to know if this is a legal document or a fraud...you have 30 minutes. Hurry up." he said sternly on the phone as he scanned the paper.
He looked towards his di and the man she was crying next to. He saw him unsteadily open his eyes and groan, Anjali was next to him in a second, helping him up. Shyam looked at Arnav angrily.
"Rani Sahiba look what your Chote has done to me" he said sarcastically, groaning at a shooting pain in his lower back.
Anjali shot Arnav a reprimanding look and looked back at her husband as she gave him some water,
"I don't know what's gotten into him lately" she said
"Ask him Di." Arnav said sternly. Anjali looked unsurely at Shyam while Shyam looked expectantly at her,
"Ask me what Rani Sahiba?" he said as he finished his water.
"Chote...its not true"
"DI. Ask him." Arnav said, his fists clenching in anger.
"Chote I said its not true." She said more firmly
"FINE. ILL ASK HIM." Arnav said angrily as he turned his attention to Shyam, "Why don't you tell us all about the documents you just showed me."
Shyam looked nervously at the family,
"Saale saab...I just showed you Khushi's divorce papers"
"How did you get them..were you with her?"
"No. they arrived in the mail. If you ever checked the mail you would've known it arrived yesterday"
"And what about the other document?"
"Which one?" Shyam said feigning innocence.
"See Chote, I told you he doesn't know." Anjali interrupted
"DI. Listen to Nanav" NK said sternly. The whole family turned their attention to NK, "you need to stop being blind and just see the truth that's right in front of you"
Anjali stared at her younger cousin, unsure what to say, not realizing her blind trust in her husband was endangering the lives of all her loved ones.
"Shyam, about the pa-" Arnav began but was soon interrupted by Shyams violent coughs.
"Rani...Sa...saiba...I...I ne-"
"Chote let him rest for a while then we can talk about everything" Anjali said as she helped her husband up, completely forgetting about the grave problem in front of her. Choosing to ignore all proof against him.
Arnav could argue no more as Shyam was led to his bedroom, giving Arnav a menacing smile before leaving.
The whole family soon filed out, leaving him alone in his room to his thoughts. It wasn't possible. Shaila wasn't Shyams daughter. She was his daughter. Why else would Khushi tell him he was the father? Was she lying to him, trying to trap him? No ...no he couldn't think about her like that anymore. He loved her, and he had a strong feeling she loved him back. Khushi would never have...have gotten intimate with that man. No..no she hated him. Finally Arnav began to realize her innocence. It was..it was all that leeches fault all along and he had let his lies get to him, but...but not anymore. No, he was done believing the man's lies, they had ruined his life. They were what separated him from Khushi; what made him ruin her life.
He looked at the crumpled sheet on the floor, the divorce papers. They had Khushi's signatures on them. Did she really want to divorce him? Was that what she really wanted? He remembered his words from that night she had left,
Just send me the divorce papers tomorrow..from wherever you are. I'll sign them You'll be free Khushi... free from me
No...he wouldn't let her go. He wouldn't set her free. He was too selfish. He needed her. He needed her in her life, he wouldn't sign anything that set them apart. He ripped up the piece of paper and chugged it in the bin.
A while later, Kaka entered with Shaila in his arms, Arnav looked at the clock, 1 pm...it was her nap time. Just as he was about to take a sleepy Shaila from kaka, someone intercepted him. Instead, Shyam had put her arms around her,
"Beta...Im your papa..."he said menacingly
All Arnav wanted to do right now was kill that man. Why wasn't he leaving him alone? Shaila looked at the bruised, evil looking man worriedly and hid into kaka. Arnav pushed Shyams hands off his daughter,
"Don't touch her" he scowled and reached out for his daughter, who willingly went into his arms and cuddled up, afraid of the man who was calling him her papa. Khalid Kaka left quietly
Just then, a soft voice was heard,
"Shyamji...?" di asked as she came to stand next to them, "oh, here you are. I went to get you water and when I came back you weren't here."
She saw him standing in front of an angry looking Arnav holding Shaila protectively.
"What are you doing here?" she asked Shyam confusedly
"Uh...I was just...choro rani sahiba...lets get some sleep. Im exhausted."
"Come lets go...Ill get Amana from naniji's room" and with that she left.
"I don't know what you want from me, but you have your own daughter, how about you worry about her rather than claiming my daughter as yours." Arnav said as he shut the door in his face.
He changed Shaila and put her to bed,
"papa...why was that man saying he was my papa"
"I don't know baby"
"You're my papa"
"I know."
"Then who is he?"
"No one. Shaila..dont go near him okay? If he ever comes near you...just call for me"
Shaila nodded and once she was fed some milk, was soon fast asleep. Arnav stared at the little girl in his arms, if he even had any doubt she wasn't his daughter, it was wiped off by the fact that she had the same eyes as his mothers. Not that he even for a moment believed Shyam. He was sure, this little girl was his, his daughter, his little princess. He felt bad for Amana, she was the one whose actual father was that leech. He needed to get her away from his influence. Di was already far too gone in his worshipping, but he needed to protect that little girl.
Arnav decided to get up and finish packing. He had to leave soon...more like now. His mission wasn't really going to plan so far. Half an hour or so later, Arnav received a call from Aman,
"Yes Aman what did you find?"
"Umm Sir..."he began shakily
