Prologue :" A Princess"

She stood in her room hidden from everyone's sight as she saw her only remaining friend get in a car and leave her forever, Riya had been a year younger than her, and today she got adopted by a nice family. She knew it was wrong to feel sad when her friend found new parents for herself yet she can't help but wonder why no one wanted her.                       

She cried herself to sleep that night because everyone else gets to have new parents except her. She was happy for her friend but still, the tears won't stop because no one wanted her, maybe it was because she hadn't been a good girl like the rest of them and it made her feel worse she began to fear no one will want her.               

She was 6 years old according to Latha warden who took care of all the kids and she learned from Savithri Dida who runs the orphanage that she was a little baby when she first came to live with them, unlike Rohith who was four years old when he came to live with them because his parents died.                 

She didn't know what happened to her parents. She didn't like that they died leaving her alone, she looked at the empty bed beside her and wondered if Riya would have a room of her own, her friend told her that her new parents promised to give her a new room.            

She loved Savitri dida and everyone in the orphanage including the crying baby that was brought in last week, the baby never stops crying and since the baby was in her room she never could get to sleep either and she didn't hate the baby for crying because today she couldn't stop crying either.  As she lay in the bed that night, she wished for someone to adopt her. She promised herself that she will remain a good daughter to them and will never cry and keep them awake at night just like the baby.

The next day she got up from bed and helped the younger ones get ready for breakfast, then the little kids would be taken to the big room where Savithri Dida will teach them the Alphabet and numbers just like she taught her.  She wanted to go to school like the older kids in the orphanage, and Savitri Dida told her she will get to go from this year which meant she was alone in her room when she saw the arrival of a new car.                 

Several people visit the orphanage, some come to play with the kids, some come to meet Savitri Dida in her room and only a few people will come to adopt them, she knew it yet when she saw the person who got down from the car, she hoped he was here to adopt her.                

It wasn't his shining red car that got her attention, it was his smile when he greeted the older kids who were playing outside and when he stopped for a moment to play with them and even-handed over few chocolate bars to them before heading towards Dida's office, and she knew those who came to adopt will have their wife with them. Yet she kept looking at him hoping he would like her enough to adopt her.  And she kept looking at the car waiting for his return. When Latha warden rushed in to take the crying baby, that was when she knew for sure that he was here to adopt them. She waited for her to bring her as well but she didn't take her with the baby.                  

" Can I come too ?" She asked with a hint of nervousness and when Latha warden shook her head, she was too disappointed to even voice her protest. She remembered that when she was little Savithri Dida would show her to those who came to adopt but recently she was always left alone in her room when anyone visits, she didn't know if it was because she had been a bad girl or if no one really wanted her.             

And then she saw him walking back to his car and he wasn't smiling this time around and he looked too sad, she thought it must be because he didn't like anyone in the orphanage. Then she saw Latha warden speaking to him and she walked away from the window because she didn't want to see him leave.           

Five minutes later Latha warden came inside the room to ask her to go into Dida office room, she didn't understand the reason behind the request until the warden told her it was because someone wants to see her. She rushed back to the window and saw the car was still in its place which meant he hadn't left yet which made her hope.           

The warden always liked her and maybe because of that she let her change into her favorite dress at her insistence before heading out, when they brought the dress it came up to her ankle now it came to her knees but still it remains her favorite because it was in pink her favorite color.             

She entered the room with all the nervousness of a six-year-old but the moment she saw him she was relieved because he smiled at her just like he did with the others, he no longer looked sad and it was like he was happy to see her and it was because of it,  she began to hope maybe he would adopt her.              

"   Hi, My name is Sanskar what is your name beta? "  she heard him ask her with a gentleness that she grew to like him more than before because his voice was kind.           

" Lavanya " she spoke up but in her fear, it only came out as a whisper. And she held her dress with a firm grip made by her tiny hands a habit of hers when she was nervous.             

" A very lovely name beta," he spoke up yet again making her smile at him in return. Because she was glad he liked her name. When he asked her to sit beside him, she was too nervous to say anything but obeyed it in fear he might leave if she didn't do as he said but he simply stared at her for a very long time according to her.  When in truth barely a minute passed away.             

She didn't realize at the time he was waiting for her to speak up, ask him questions about him but instead, she worried herself that there was something wrong with the way she looked.          

" Am I not beautiful?  " the question was raised after the minute of silence from Lavanya. Because she wanted him to like her and Megha the eldest of them told her once that they have to look pretty if they want to be get adopted while she dressed them up for a visit like this one.                 

" You are very beautiful beta, you look just like a princess " he answered back making all her doubts vanish in a second. Because she liked to be called a princess just like the fairytale books Latha warden read to her and the other kids.           

" Why didn't you give me chocolate, you gave everyone chocolate," she asked him a little later with the newfound confidence that he called her a princess.            

" I totally forgot, here you go princess," he said as he handed over two chocolates to her instead of one. And she quickly snatched it away from his hand in glee because it has been ages since she had one.           

" Do you want to come home with me ? " he asked when she was halfway through her first chocolate bar and she only could nod her head in answer.          

" Will you be my daddy ?" she asked him when she finished eating the chocolate. Because she knew those who adopt them will become her parents.         

" Yes Princess, and the next time I will bring with me someone prettier like you, she will be your mom " he answered her and she only smiled at him in answer. Because she couldn't believe her wish last night came true.             

He left after another ten minutes but he promised her that he will come soon to take her home with him and she was happy because she believed him. But when a week passed and there was no sign of him. She believed he found someone else and blamed herself for demanding chocolate from him. She thought he didn't come for her because she demanded chocolate and as time passed she began to cry herself to sleep every night.           

Then one day the warden told her, they are here to pick her up. She wanted to look pretty for her mom as well so she once again changed into her pink Cinderella dress and went to the Dida office.  She didn't know what made her run straight into his arms but she was so thankful he came that she raced into his arms the moment she saw him.          

" You came, you really came, we can go home together right," she asked him once he lifted her up into his arms.        

" Princess, I told you right. The next time I will bring with me someone very pretty just like you " he spoke and she turned and saw the pretty woman sitting beside him in the room . She really looked very pretty as he said but at the same time, she looked really sad as well.  That Lavanya wondered if she didn't like her.       

" Hi, I am Lavanya. You are indeed very pretty. The warden told me you will be my mom and him, my dad, I will be a really good girl and won't even demand chocolate. I really like him and want to go with him, do you like me?" She spoke up as she got so nervous around her but when the pretty woman only looked at her with sadness she realized she didn't like her. That she felt close to tears all over again            

" Swara . Why don't you tell our princess how much you like her " the man who she wanted to be her dad spoke up after a while, which made the pretty woman open her bag to take out a few chocolates.           

" You like chocolate, " the pretty woman asked and she nodded her head in her answer, so the pretty woman gave the chocolate to her which made Lavanya hope she liked her.        

When her would-be dad told Lavanya that she should take the pretty woman and show her around the orphanage.  She got to her feet and kept the chocolates in her mini purse and held out her hand for the pretty woman but instead of holding her hand, she lifted her up as if she weighed nothing.  She remembered being carried sometimes when she was small but no one ever lifted her for few years. At the moment she liked the pretty woman a lot.              

She showed the pretty woman her room which she shared with other kids, the kitchen, the playground, the dining room, the room where tiny babies were held, and finally when the tour ended she waited for the woman to take her back to the office.  Instead, she gently kissed Lavanya's cheeks, she has never been kissed before, she often kissed the tiny babies when she watched over them but no one ever kissed her before and at that moment the little girl fell in love with the pretty woman who would soon be her mom.
