Taani
There was a time when they were close enough to share what was in their hearts. There was a time when he shared everything with her. And yet, that closeness became their downfall.
The distance between them grew insurmountable and suddenly, she was adrift with no way of knowing which way was up. So here she was, going it alone, wishing she could rewind time to days passed.
She remembered it all. The late-night phone calls, the secret dates on the terrace, the secret meetings in her room, the secret meetings in the stairway alcove.
‘A lot of secrets,’ she thought bitterly.
He’d said I love you. She’d said it back, taking it at his pace, knowing they would get where they needed to. Who knew that it would lead to this?
He’d said that she taught him how to love.
He taught her how to handle pain.
She remembered their hugs. Space was scarce when he enveloped her in his arms and she felt peace. Secure.
Loved.
He’d lift her head with a finger under her chin, and she’d avoid eye contact. A hug reddened her face. Being in his space did that anyway, but a hug was all it took for her mind to take flight.
The softness of his kiss still remained on her lips and on dark nights when she couldn’t keep th memories locked up anymore, she let them caress and cocoon her mind in the memory of his warmth.
Everything had gone down in flames and she didn’t know where to place the blame and who to question. They’d drifted from each other after the initial spark had almost died down, but everyone had fueled that spark with malice and turned it into something…other.
And now, all she had left were the memories.
There were days when the memories of their moments blindsided her and she was left gasping for breath. The moments she once held dear were what tormented her.
The moments he spent wrapped in her arms.
The moments she spent loving him.
The moments they spent planning a future together.
A future that would now never come to be.
All they had was the distance between them and memories of days passed.
