Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Maan and Geet stuck to safe questions which included favourite destinations, where they would like to visit and which famous person they’d want to date, marry or kill. After an evening of questions, Geet called it a night and he saluted her wishing her goodnight and closed the door behind her. He waited for a second on the porch until he heard the click of the lock and headed to his house for the rest of the night.
The following morning, Geet frowned hearing the pounding on the front door as she stepped out of the shower. She grabbed her thick robe wrapping it around her and waddled downstairs. Geet swung open the door in shocked and was faced with her wailing daughter and a peeved off expression on her ex-husband’s face.
“Nyra” she crouched and brought her daughter close swiping her tears. “Baby girl, what happened?”
“Daddy shouted” Nyra cried burying face in her mother’s bosom.
“She kept asking for a dog! Why do you keep spoiling her?” he countered.
Geet glared. If looks could kill, her ex-husband would be a pile of ash and she would have been dancing on top of them with Nyra. But her focus right now was her daughter.
“Baby girl, daddy is naughty” she said sweetly wiping away her tears. “He’s a grumpy dragon in the morning, remember?” she asked.
Nyra sniffed and nodded. “I palay with doggy, mama”.
“Of course, we’ll knock on later. Did you eat breakfast?” she asked.
That brought a wave of fresh tears rolling down Nyra’s cheek. “Dadi not make me pancakes like you” she threw her arms around Geet sobbing.
“Shh… shh. Mama is going to make you pancakes with chocolate chips, baby… Shh…” Geet rubbed her daughter’s back shooting a glare at Rahul as he stared back with condemnation.
“Go and play over there for now, mama is going to talk to daddy right now” she ushered her inside gesturing to the crayons and paper. Nyra nodded pulling away, she looked at her dad angrily and trotted inside without another word to him.
Geet stepped outside keeping the door open a little and scowled at her husband. “How could you make her cry so early in the morning?” she hissed sharply.
“If you stopped spoiling her…” he growled.
“Do you see a dog anywhere in the house, you ass?” she snapped cutting him off yet keeping her voice low. She did not want Nyra hearing her or copying her. “You better make this right. You know she eats if you give her what she wants to eat” she reminded.
“If you didn’t make her so picky then…”
“Shut up. Stop blaming me for everything” Geet poked his chest with her finger. “You did this. You took the morning shifts with her so I could be earning for us!” she reminded pointedly. “You got her into the habit not me so don’t try and pin everything on me”.
Rahul glared at her and pushed her finger away from his chest. “You can throw blame as much as you want. Everyone knows you’re a rubbish mother”.
She had thought he couldn’t have hurt her as much as he had when he cheated. Apparently, that was untrue. He drove the knife into her chest and twisted it. Geet inhaled sharply and felt the tingling pangs in her eyes and nose as tears pooled.
“My kids have no chance with you” he looked at her disgusted and stalked off.
Geet pressed her hand to the doorframe feeling her knees weaken with his words.
Everyone knows you’re a rubbish mother.
Geet closed her eyes and covered her mouth with her palm to stop the sob from escaping. It took a lot of effort, but she swallowed it down. She shouldn’t allow him to affect her like he did, but he was once her love, her husband and the father of her child.
“Mama I get pancakes now” Nyra yelled from inside.
Geet gathered the pieces of her broken heart, tucked them away and returned inside with a giant smile on her lips. “Of course, baby girl. You want to help mama make it?” she asked.
“Yeah, I hep, mama” Nyra dropped her crayons clasping Geet’s hand and skipped to the kitchen giggling.
After pancakes, Geet learned that her ex-husband nor her mother-in-law had even bathed Nyra last night or this morning, so she tugged Nyra up the stairs and stripped her out of her clothes then escorted her to the shower.
After Geet dressed Nyra, she shucked off her robe and dressed in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt setting for comfort than style. She looked at her dresses and brushed a hand through them remembering the times she used to fit into them. Now she couldn’t wear them she thought looking down at her rounded belly. Soon she told herself.
“Do you want to go to the park?” Geet asked looking over at Nyra.
“We take papa?” Nyra asked excitedly bouncing up and down.
“We can ask” she replied clasping Nyra’s hand and led her downstairs. “Sit there whilst mama packs some snacks and sandwiches for you” she told her heading into the kitchen. Geet prepared some sandwiches and placed them neatly into the container. She then prepared some fruits and did the same. She placed both containers into the backpack and grabbed two little drink cartons for Nyra, a bottle of water for herself and a packet of crisp.
Once she and Nyra had slipped on their sneakers, she walked out of the door and locked it behind her. Geet knocked on Maan’s door but there was no answer. After waiting for a few minutes, she told Nyra that Maan wasn’t home and they’ll go today and ask him next time. Nyra agreed and skipped alongside Geet as they walked to the park which was a 10-minute walk from their new home. Nyra’s eyes widened in excitement as she was led to the playground area and saw monkey bars, swings, spring rockers, activity towers with slides, slides by itself, carousels, and sandbox.
Geet grabbed Nyra before she could take off running, she drew her close and said, “No running, mama can’t run like you. You stay close as well, baby girl. Ok?”
“Ok, mama. I want to go on swing” she pointed.
Geet nodded and escorted her to the swings, she smiled politely at the other mother’s who pushed their little ones on the swing before one lifted their child out and gestured for Geet to place Nyra in it.
Nyra squealed clapping her hands and stretched out her palms for Geet to lift her.
“Stwanger!” Nyra squealed suddenly being lifted by Maan and placed into the swing. “Papa” she laughed clapping her hands together seeing Pepper besides Maan waggling his tail happily.
“What are you doing here?” Geet questioned with a smile as she took over pushing Nyra in the swing. “We dropped by your place” she added.
“I brought Pepper out for his walk” Maan pointed. “Sit” he said looking down at Pepper as he looked around happily and Maan knew Pepper wanted to go exploring each equipment. “Now, Pepper” he added sternly. He could not have his puppy running excitedly with all these young children around who would most likely be scared. Pepper whined before ducking his head down on his paws and watched.
“Did you need something?” Maan asked as he leaned against the frame watching Geet.
“Huh?” she frowned.
“You said you dropped by” he motioned.
“Oh, right. Yeah, we were coming to the park so was going to ask if we could take Pepper with us” she informed.
He nodded and looked at Nyra. “So, princess did you have fun at your daddy’s?” he asked making conversation.
Nyra’s brows bunched together. “No! Dadi not make me pancake you know” she complained. “And daddy not get me a doggy” she added further. “Then he shout at me and I cwy”.
“Oh, ok. Wow” Maan muttered looking stumped and unsure of what to say.
Geet pressed her lips together looking amused as he just looked baffled.
“What should I say to her?” he whispered as Nyra looked at him expectantly.
“Dunno” Geet shrugged her shoulder enjoying his baffled face.
“You’re real mean, you know” he muttered.
“I know” Geet grinned sweetly.
“Stwanger did you hear dat?” Nyra asked.
“Y…Yyyeah, yeah I did” he stumbled on his words.
Nyra frowned and looked at Geet. “Mama I get down now. I want to palay over there” she pointed to the sandbox feeling bored of waiting for Maan.
Geet nodded clasping the seat to a stop and lifted Nyra up and out of the seat. Nyra was about to run off when Geet grabbed her hand and looked at her sternly. “What did mama say about running?” she asked.
“I no wun” Nyra huffed. “Now come on, mama” she dragged her whilst Geet just about managed to grab the backpack and followed behind. Maan followed as did Pepper.
“How does she have so much energy?” Maan asked in wonder.
“She’s a kid. They have ten times the energy you and I probably have combined” Geet laughed sitting down on the bench whilst Nyra played in the sandbox. She’d run with Geet following behind to the slides, then to the activity tower before going on the carousal and rounding back to the sandbox. Geet waddled but kept up with her ball of energy as she zipped and zapped.
“That’s another thing to dislike about kids” he muttered.
“Ok. No more, I don’t like kids from you” she told him with a nudge of her elbow.
He chuckled and looked at Pepper. “Come on, Pepper. Time to get home” he stood. “I’ll see you later, mama bear” he told her.
Geet nodded.
“Bye Nyra” Maan called out waving his hand.
“Bye stwanger!” Nyra waved eagerly. “Bye Papa!” she yelled.
Pepper barked in response earning gasps from some of the children and Maan took that as his cue to leave.
“Yummy”
Geet snapped her head to the right at the young woman who’d taken a seat besides her. “Sorry?” she said looking around to see who the woman was speaking to her.
“Oh, did I say that out loud?” the young woman said and laughed when Geet nodded. “Hi, I’m Indu” she held out her hand. “I was just calling your fine specimen yummy” she gestured in the direction of Maan.
Geet chuckled. “Geet. I’ll let him know his efforts to look great is not going to waste”.
“How did you get him?” Indu asked wickedly. “Does he have a brother or twin? Either works”.
“I did not get him” Geet laughed. “He’s my neighbour. Single, I assume from our brief conversations and girls complaining about him not being exclusive and committed”.
“Sounds like my kind of guy” Indu smiled cheerfully. “You and he aren’t…” she asked gesturing to Geet’s belly.
“No, nothing like that” Geet smiled shaking her head. “Neighbours only”.
“Mama, I eat sawich now” Nyra ran to her crouching to grab the backpack.
“One second, baby girl” Geet grabbed the packet of wipes wiping down Nyra’s hands and face before she pulled out the packed sandwich for Nyra. She lifted Nyra and placed her onto the bench, so she was sitting and eating and not running around.
“Does your little one want a sandwich?” Geet asked Indu.
“I don’t have a little one” Indu said.
“Oh, then what are you doing in the playground?” she chuckled.
“I don’t have them, my sister does” she pointed. “That’s Maya and her two rugrats” she gestured. “You know those boys who are ripping the grass and trying to eat it”.
Geet laughed nodding her head.
“So that’s my nephews, she dragged me out to help keep an eye on them” she scrunched her nose. “Aman already tried eating a worm twice now”.
“Fun stage” Geet teased.
