Epilogue...part 2
If someone had told him that valentines day two years later would bring about his greatest wish he would have never believed them. But there they were: he clad in his tuxedo and she, the woman who he had never forgotten, resplendent in her red dress together again...
Unfortunately, any thought, any sliver of chance that there could have been more to the two of them if they were ever to meet again, evaporated in that moment when her stumble had her reaching for the closest person to prevent her fall, and she ended up willingly in his arms. She breathed heavily, and for a split second Jaison's breath caught as he contemplated what this could mean. But the universe quickly gave him the message he was meant to receive tonight when Mehek placed one hand low on her abdomen and closed her eyes in unmitigated relief. In an instant he understood everything: the secret hidden by her trim frame as well as the fact she would always belong to Shaurya Khanna, who was making a beeline for his wife from across the room.
"Thank you Sir, you have..."
"Are you okay Mehek," Jaison asked gently.
Looking up at her unwitting rescuer for the first time, Mehek's expression took on one of confusion as she attempted to recall the man who was a stranger and yet was not.
"You look beautiful as ever tonight Mehek, but all things considered, perhaps a lower heel will be just the thing for the duration of your pregnancy. I may not be around the next time to prevent another mishap."
Mehek's mouth fell ajar, but whatever she intended to say was lost when her husband reached, his face a mixture of concern and something more formidable at seeing his wife in another man's arms. "Jaan, is everything okay?"
Even without the warning crackling over his earpiece, he was working after all, Jaison knew he had to make his exit from the situation. He no reason to doubt that Shaurya Khanna's memory would fail him, and the attention that could bring would not bode well for his current assignment.
"I was just advising your wife that regardless how delectable the shoe, that in her condition, common sense should prevail at all times." Taking the second glass of champagne, the one that the clueless husband had clearly procured for his wife, from Shaurya's hand, Jaison clinked it against the remaining one and cheekily offered his congratulations to the stunned father to be. It was more than enough of a distraction to allow his escape as the couple were now totally focused on each other.
"Mehek..."
Her cheeks flushed, Mehek stared at her husband with bright eyes. "I guess you can say my gift to you this year is a little different, Shaury. You won't actually get to see it for some months yet." When her poleaxed spouse said nothing she continued. "This isn't exactly how I wanted to tell you the news..."
"That second glass of champagne was for you, Mehek."
Not quite sure if that was an accusation or not Mehek smiled at the befuddled man beside her. "Well considering where we are I cannot blame you for thinking that would have been my choice, but I would have declined it, if you had but asked what I would have preferred."
Her sentence broke through her husband's stupor and she watched amused as he hailed the closest waiter. His own glass, barely touched, went onto the empty tray in a determination to support his beloved. "No alcohol," he announced as if he was home or at the very least at their restaurant. "She will have...milk...yes that's it."
"Ahem, she will juice," Mehek insisted, "apple if you have it, and please bring my husband a soft drink," she added sending the server off with a smile. "I will not be at my first ever film opening drinking a glass of milk," she teased.
