Chapter 4) The different shades of Love

Raavi couldn’t help her tears, she was just crying her heart out.

What a clutter my life is right now. All because of a misunderstanding. I need to talk to Maasi and Mausapaa about this.”

She was about to enter their room when she heard them talking.

“I am so happy that Raavi is getting married. It was a huge worry for me. Especially after what happened with Anita.” Her mausapaa told her maasi.

But why did you take such a big loan for this wedding?”

“Because I don’t want to compromise on anything for Raavi. Also, my relationship with my sister is improving because of this wedding. I won’t take any chances.”

Hearing this Raavi left the room. She realised that nothing is going to change the fact that she messed things up. She assumed one thing after another and is now facing the consequences. If only she had not presumed things, her life would have been so different.

I was confused but not Shiva. Why did he say yes? He hates me. He could have simply said No. I need to talk to him before I worsen the situation.”

Just then, it clicked her that Shiva had come to her that day. She was living in her own wonderland and gave him the wrong signal. She has totally put herself in this predicament. She was just crying hugging the pillow. It was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. But here she was knowing that the guy she loved all her life did not love her back. And to make things worse for her, she is getting married to a guy who has always loathed her.

She saw the mehendi on her hand and saw the name of Shiva in it. It brought back the memories when he insulted her all her life. She cannot do this to herself and to him. “He should not suffer because of my stupidity.”

She came back to the function and was determined to talk to her Maasi but was unable to get hold of her. She decided that she will talk to her tomorrow and make things clear.

It was the D-day, Shiva was wearing a yellow kurta pyjama to celebrate the haldi function. He looked at his reflection in the mirror which brought back a memory to him.

Shiva, why can’t you dress well for once? It is my birthday and you are looking like this?” 12 year old Raavi scolded him and made him realise that he was looking the odd one out.

“I am still looking better than you, Chipkali.”

Their tomfoolery, which used to irritate Shiva a lot was now the reason for his smile. He combed his hair with a grin on his face which he was unable to hide.

The moment his family members saw him, they were surprised. Everyone at the Pandya household was having a day filled with fun and  dance. Dev and Shiva’s faces were totally covered with haldi which reflected the amount of love the whole family has for each other.

On the other hand, Raavi was unable to gather the courage to talk to someone. When she looked at Anita, it brought back those memories which further spoiled the relationship between the two families. She cannot do that to her father-figure, she cannot do that to her Dhara di and Gaumbi.

Raavi was looking like a porcelain doll in the yellow sari but the usually jovial Raavi was missing.

Raavi, why aren’t you enjoying today? You should dance with us.” Anita said.

Di, it has dawned on me that I am going to leave you today. It is a lot to process.” Raavi got a hug in return from Anita.

She saw her reflection in the mirror when she came back to the room. It was a distant image of the usually happy and chirpy Raavi. The only thing that made sense to Raavi was to go ahead with everything. She felt it was the right thing to do.

Dressed in a magenta lehenga with golden work, Raavi looked like a dream to Shiva. The moment his eyes fell on her he realised how lucky he was. Her smile used to light up a room and today, it was lighting up Shiva’s whole world. The question was still hovering in his head that why did she say yes to him but for now, he was going to cherish this moment.

Raavi was presenting a charade in front of everyone that she was the happiest soul today but her heart was burning. She looked at Shiva who was beaming wearing a beige sherwani with magenta turban. She scoffed a little and thought to herself. “We are coordinated for once today, Shiva.”

The marriage went smoothly. Raavi had promised herself that she will not look at Dev. She had taken a decision and she will not regret that she is getting married to Shiva. She was completely focused on Shiva.

Raavi was waiting for Shiva to come to the room. She had decided that she will never let anyone know about her love for Dev but will start her marriage to Shiva with a clean slate. She cannot be dishonest with him.

Hi!” Shiva said.

Hey”

“So, we are married. To be honest, I always thought you will be the last person I will get married to.”

“Me too.”

“Raavi. Are you okay? You don’t seem fine to me.” Hearing this, Raavi started crying. She was sobbing like a little baby and in between her cries, she talked.

Shiva…there has been…a huge confusion…I thought…I thought I will be getting…married…but not to you…hence, I said…yes.”

Shiva was trying to make sense of what she was saying.

I am not getting it. You thought what?” He asked shaking his head.

I did not want to marry you.”

Shiva stumbled back a little and hit the bed side. He ran his fingers through his hair and tried to make sense of what was being told to him.

But…but you said yes to the wedding.”

“Yeah. I said yes because I thought…”

“Did someone force you? Maami maama?”

Raavi saw concern in his eyes but she wanted to clear her conscience by telling him the truth first. She wiped her tears and took a deep breath.

No Shiva. Nobody forced me. In fact, I am the one who wronged you. Our marriage…it was a result of huge confusion. I liked…I thought I was marrying him…I liked Dev.”

Everything made sense to Shiva now. He scoffed a little on the reality. “It is the truth. No one can marry someone like me out of love. Why did you marry me then?” He held Raavi from her shoulders with tears in his eyes.

I couldn’t tell our families when I realised the truth. I got to know about it too late. They would have been hurt…a lot.”

“So you thought of hurting me. This guy who is not worldly wise, you will make a fool of him. You were many things Raavi but selfish was not one of those. Today, you proved me wrong. Why did you do this, Raavi?…Why?” He was so loud that Raavi had to put her hand on his mouth to stop him from shouting so much.

Shiva, I know I wronged you. Trust me, I don’t want anything with Dev now. He is married and so are we. I just want to get it out of my head. I cannot start our marriage, our relationship with a lie.”

“Yeah, relationship. Marriage. Your conscience. You. Everything was about you. Your love. Your dream. I am left with nothing but a sham marriage because of your obsession with becoming Ms. Goody two shoes. What relationship are you talking about? This marriage.”

Raavi nodded her head. She tried to calm Shiva down by putting a hand on his shoulder but he jerked it away.

You wanted to be a Pandya. Congratulations, you are Raavi Pandya. You did this for your family, for my family. Then, enjoy your married life with them. Stay in this house with me as my wife but in this room, you are nobody to me.”

Raavi fell on the floor crying. She was expecting this outburst but she did not anticipate the hurt that she was feeling.

I am sorry, Shiva. I have hurt you the most but give me a chance. Please.”

“I do not want your apology. I do not want this relationship. And most importantly, I do not want you.” With this, he left the room.
