Ami Trivedi, who currently portrays the character of Manjiri, Abhimanyu's mother in Star Plus' show 'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai', has been a subject of discussion among the show's viewers for some time. While recent developments in the show have triggered strong reactions from 'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai' fans towards Manjiri's character, Ami, in an exclusive conversation with India Forums, shared her thoughts on her role in the show, the character's portrayal, and much more.
Some fans are currently not liking your character Manjiri. What's your take on their views regarding your character?
I think everyone has their own reasons for liking or disliking a character. Sometimes, certain actions of a character may be perceived as wrong, depending on one's own life experiences. Different people may find different things right or wrong.
Having said that, what is your personal take on Manjiri's current track in the show?
Currently, I'm performing the character, fully immersed in Manjiri's perspective. I won't justify or take sides with her for her actions. I'm portraying a character that reflects someone else's imagination and viewpoint. When I consider Manjiri's character arc and think of her as a human, whether she is right or wrong, those are her traits, and I need to portray the character accordingly. As a mother, there are times when she is right, and there are moments when I, as a mother, also find her actions wrong. I won't share my personal view here. However, I'm playing a character and aiming to convey the character's point of view.
Do you think your character is being villainized in the show?
When I joined the show, we were informed during a meeting with the cast, producers, and creatives that there are no villains in the show. If you ever feel like you're a villain, you should understand that you are not. Its rather rather about acting according to your character's perspective. You may not react to a situation in the same way as your character does, so it's essential to comprehend that. I've kept this in mind. Nevertheless, some of Manjiri's actions may not sit well with certain sections of society. We just have to learn what not to do, I suppose.
Manjiri's character is quite extreme. When it comes to supporting Akshara, she does so wholeheartedly, but when she's adamant, she's extremely so. What's your take on this?
That's another character trait. She is adamant about what she believes is correct, a trait many people share. It's just that we are currently observing it from a third-party viewpoint, so we understand what's wrong. But haven't we all encountered people like that? I've met individuals who are similarly stubborn even when they are wrong. So perhaps viewers see the character and realize they need to adapt to the times and situations. Yes, I agree that Manjiri has always been very adamant.
Regarding the current storyline, as we discussed earlier, some of the audience is not fond of Manjiri. Have you received negative comments, and if so, how do you deal with them?
Honestly, I used to get deeply affected initially. Even now, when my family gets involved, I find it extremely inappropriate and wrong. There's no need to make it personal. In this day and age, everyone knows that what they see on TV is a scripted story, even children understand this. So, when people involve actors and their family members over a character they are playing, I find it unacceptable. It's wrong on multiple levels. My way of dealing with it is learning how to ignore it. I've also learned not to get overly excited with compliments. To be honest, Manjiri's character has received a lot of love along with the trolling. Now, nothing affects me as much.
