Y-Films, a subsidiary of the juggernaut Yash Raj Films has been presenting some fantastic shows and series recently. And they are back with the much-awaited series Sex Chat with Pappu & Papa'. Apart from a stellar star cast, the series deals with one of the most tabooed concepts of sex education.
Episode 1- Masturbation
Innocent kid Pappu aka Punit Watsa (Kabir Sajid) is playing cricket and just 35 seconds into the episode he runs to his Papa (father), Anand Watsa (Anand Tiwari) and asks the question, "papa, yeh masturbation kya hota hai?" (Dad, what does masturbation mean?). Just like any normal father, Papa is shocked at the question and tries to divert him by telling him to get his bat. Papa gets a call from his father, Vishwanath Watsa aka Mogambo (Sachin Pilgaonkar), who is a typical strict and outmoded father.
The conversation between Anand and his father makes you remember one of the many similar conversations every son must have had with their fathers. Mogambo tends to misunderstand everything Anand tries to explain whereas his mother, Usha Watsa aka Maa/Mataji (Alka Amin) is a cool and supportive mother. She understands the plight of her son and is friendly with him. His mother visits him at his place to stay with them, as Anand's wife, Shireen Sheikh Watsa aka Mumma is pregnant. Soon after the mother-son phone talk ends, Pappu re-asks the question-that-is-a-mistake' that what does masturbation mean..?
What follows is one of the most apt, hilarious, quirky and amazing explanations of masturbation and how difficult it can be to educate about sex to kids.
About the concept..The episode is nothing short of an eye-opener but in the most hilarious way imaginable. Every man who is in his 30s-40s would relate to the character of Anand. A golden line is soon established in the show, Don't be a baap, be a papa.' If there is one thing Anand has learned from his relationship with his father is that it is extremely important to have a transparent relationship with your son where he should be able to freely ask you about his doubts. They may be stupid, bold or tabooed; but what you learn is that asking you would be much better than knowing himself (we know what that means). The actors..
Every actor in the episode does a phenomenal job at their roles. The veteran, Sachin Pilgaonkar plays the typically outmoded father to perfection with the amazing comic timing we know him for. Anand Tiwari does what he does best and that is excel. Apart from being the fantastic actor that he is, Anand is also the story developer of the series. The adorable kid played by Kabir Sajid is so amazing, that a better kid for that role wouldn't have been possible. Also, at the end of the episode, he runs us through some facts in a very innocent and direct manner. Alka Amin and Sanjeeda Shaikh didn't have much to do in the episode, but we can be rest assured about their performances. The Icebreaker..
The episode explains us why is sex education so important in India and rather how to actually practice it. Telling that sex education is important is one thing whereas actually trying to explain it to a child is another. The Axe of Taboos..
The fact file which Kabir aka Pappu runs us through in the end of the episode are the clarifications of several inhibited thoughts about masturbation which include the fact that masturbation doesn't mean you will run out of sperm or that it will get you pregnant among others.
The several taboos related to not only masturbation but sex need to be cleared and not just for the adults, but for the kids too.
The Verdict
The show fantastically blends the rare mixture of satirical comedy, blue humour and enlightenment about sex. With outstanding performances, a terrific script and rib-tickling jokes, Sex Chat with Pappu & Papa' is an absolute gem which should get better and better.
Episode 1 was about Masturbation and Episode 2 is about Chat about Pregnancy. It's time to get enlightened not scared.
To all the parents out there, talk about the indecent' or OMG' topics with your children. If you exercise a veto, they will know it eventually. Don't be a BAAP, be a PAPA'.
