The Indian sports community was stunned when wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 for being 100 grams overweight. Phogat had been on the brink of making history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final. Her journey was cut short just before her final bout against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the USA.

In a recent video shared by PTI, BJP leader and actress Hema Malini expressed her shock and disappointment over Phogat’s disqualification. She emphasized the importance of maintaining precise weight limits, stating, “It feels strange that she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight. It is crucial to keep the weight in check; even 100 grams matter. This incident serves as a lesson for all women and artists.”

Phogat, competing in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling category, had to cut weight from her usual 53 kg to fit into the 50 kg limit for the Olympics. Despite her efforts, she was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit on the second day of weigh-ins. In an attempt to shed the excess weight, she spent the night before the weigh-in cycling and exercising intensely, managing to lose 900 grams. However, she was still disqualified.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has challenged the disqualification, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his disappointment. He praised Phogat’s determination and instructed IOA President PT Usha to file a strong appeal, exploring all possible avenues for redress.

Phogat’s disqualification came as a shock, especially since she had overcome significant challenges, including a tough match against undefeated champion Yui Susaki. Despite her remarkable performance, the disqualification means she will not secure any medal in the Paris Games. Her initial bout had set her up as a potential medalist, making the situation even more disheartening for her supporters.

Phogat’s situation highlights the stringent nature of Olympic regulations and the extreme precision required for athletes competing at the highest level.
