Varun Dhawan has recently addressed the topic of nepotism regarding his niece, Anjini Dhawan, who is set to make her debut in the comedy-drama ‘Binny and Family’. At the trailer launch event, which took place in the same PVR auditorium where Varun's own debut film ‘Student of the Year’ was premiered, he took the opportunity to highlight how Anjini has made her way into the industry purely on her own merit.
In his candid speech, Varun tackled the skepticism that often surrounds star kids. He acknowledged the public's tendency to doubt that someone from a film family can land a role without insider connections. Despite this, he stressed that Anjini’s entry into the film industry is an accomplishment she earned on her own. He urged the audience to extend the same warmth and affection to Anjini as they did for him and his siblings. “My appeal to people is that if they can try and give her the same love as you gave the three of us,” Varun said.
Varun also shared his personal experience of learning about the film through friends. He admitted he was initially surprised to discover that he wasn’t involved in the casting process. However, after watching the film, he was deeply impressed by both the narrative and Anjini’s performance. He reiterated that his father, acclaimed director David Dhawan, did not launch him, and similarly, the family had no influence on Anjini’s casting.
“No matter how much I say that she did this on her own, she has bagged the film on her own, it is difficult to believe when you are related to a film family. I am not related to Mahaveer ji; professionally we haven’t worked together. He didn’t cast her because of me or daddy,” Varun explained. He continued, “I came to know about the film through two friends, Shashank Khaitaan and Varun Gupta. They had told me that it is a good film and I was slightly offended because I wasn’t asked if I could see the film! When I saw the film, I was moved. My father never launched me. We don’t have that tradition and he doesn’t believe in it. So, we have no hand in what she has done, so it will be wrong for me to take any credit for her success. She has genuinely done this by herself.”
The trailer of ‘Binny and Family’ showcases a modern Indian family grappling with generational clashes. Anjini plays Binny, a rebellious schoolgirl whose life is disrupted when her traditional grandparents move in. Scheduled for release on 30th August, the film promises a mix of humour, emotional depth, and cultural insights, making it a much-anticipated family drama.
With a star-studded cast including Pankaj Kapur and Himani Shivpuri alongside newcomers like Naman Tripathy and Anjini Dhawan, ‘Binny and Family’ is set to appeal to audiences of all ages. The film offers a heartwarming look at family dynamics and the conflicts that naturally arise within them.
