Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, who debuted together in Karan Johar's Student of the Year (SOTY), have shared a strong friendship bond since their early days in Bollywood. While the film provided a grand launch for both actors, Varun's father, renowned filmmaker David Dhawan, recently revealed some lesser-known aspects of Varun's initial acting journey.
In a candid conversation with Arbaaz Khan on The Invincibles Series, David Dhawan shared insights into his son Varun's early career. Despite Varun's eventual success, his journey was not without its challenges. David mentioned that he was intentionally strict with Varun during their first film collaboration to ensure he remained focused and disciplined. Having already assisted Karan Johar on My Name is Khan, Varun was accustomed to working behind the scenes. Transitioning to an on-screen role, however, brought its own set of hurdles.
David Dhawan recalled how Varun discreetly approached Karan Johar for work while the Dhawan family was still deliberating Varun's career path. "He came back from abroad after studying, and I asked, 'What do you want to do in life?' Lalli [David's wife] said, 'Everyone is taking up a bank job these days.' We never talked about films. All of a sudden, he went to Karan Johar and said, 'I want to assist you.' Obviously, Karan knew the family very well, and they went abroad to work on My Name is Khan. The cameraman, Ravi Chandran, was the one who told Karan to keep an eye on him," David shared.
During the filming of SOTY, Varun felt a sense of insecurity, especially because of Sidharth Malhotra. David Dhawan revealed, "Karan came over to our house and said that he wants to launch him, and they did a photoshoot with Sidharth Malhotra." David was often present on the sets and noticed Varun's unease. "I was with him, and some days he used to be very upset also. I told him, 'These things happen in two-hero films. Listen, my son, you're damn good. Your confidence is something else. Don't be afraid, take the leap."
Despite these initial insecurities, Varun has carved out a successful career in Bollywood. He has consistently delivered hit films and showcased his versatility as an actor.
Looking ahead, Varun Dhawan has several exciting projects lined up. He will be seen in 'Baby John' which is being banked by Atlee. He is also gearing up for 'Citadel: Honey Bunny' alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
