The audiences who flock to Bollywood movies tend to idolise the leads for all sorts of qualities. These qualities tend to be traits such as courage, intelligence, integrity and other positive things. It is rare to find films where there is a break to this mould and the heroes are imperfect, with characteristics such as narrow-mindedness or arrogance, or belligerence. BollyCurry brings to you a list of a few characters from Bollywood who are not perfect, and who have one of the most common flaws perceived in human beings - laziness.
Akshay Kumar: Mr & Mrs Khiladi (1997)
The fifth installment of the mind-numbing Khiladi series was a comedy in which Akshay Kumar's Raja is not a swashbuckling hero, but instead is a bone-idle one. He believes the predictions of an astrologer that riches will come into his life, but instead of going out and achieving it, he waits around doing absolutely nothing and hopes that the riches will just drop into his lap. His life takes a turn when a millionaire heiress Shalu (Juhi Chawla) enters his life, and he thinks that his bright future has begun. However, things are not quite that simple. Ultimately, he sheds his old ways at the insistence of Shalu's father, and finally does something productive as he enters a wrestling match and wins it to earn the prize amount.
The titular character of Rajaji (Govinda) is a work-shy lad whose lifestyle is made further slothful by the pampering he receives from his mother. In his pursuit to be opulent, he sets out to find himself a rich wife. Later, the marriage breaks down when the truth about his wife's financial status is revealed. Disheartened, he starts anew with more willpower. His efforts bear fruit, and by the end of the movie, Rajaji turns over a new leaf as someone who has realized the importance of hard work in life.
Aamir Khan: Dil Chahta Hai (2000)
Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut narrates the tale of three friends - Sameer (Saif Ali Khan), a hopeless romantic, Sid (Akshay Khanna), a workaholic and Akash (Aamir Khan), who is neither committed to his career nor interested in being in a relationship. Akash's detached nature has him being somewhat of a pessimist and he often opines against his friends pursuing romantic interests as he deems it worthless. His views change as he takes up a more serious role in the family business and finds his soul mate in Shalini (Preity Zinta).
The purposeless life of Karan (Hrithik Roshan) undergoes an upheaval when he joins the armed forces at the insistence of his girlfriend Romi (Preity Zinta). The discipline and tenacity that he imbibes from his professional environment helps Karan pick up the pieces of the fractured relationships he shares with his parents, as well as with Romi. As he sheds his laziness, he faces the ultimate trial by fire in the form of a bloody war, which further aids in his transformation from a floundering boy to a man with direction.
Ranbir Kapoor: Wake Up Sid (2009)
As a young man born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Siddharth "Sid" Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) does not take academics seriously and gets a rude awakening when he fails his college final exams. Sid's friendship with career woman Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma) helps him open his eyes to the true implications of his laziness. He decides to mend his ways when Aisha points out his flaws as the reason for her rejection of forming a romantic relationship with him. As a result, Sid starts working, and his responsible nature helps him reconcile with his family and eventually with Aisha as well.
Overcoming laziness is an inspiring part of coming-of-age stories that typically resonate well with young audiences. Though the quick transformations that are portrayed on screen are seldom realistic, kudos has to be given to filmmakers who dare to attempt to redefine the typical "Bollywood hero" image.
