The much-awaited trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites has finally dropped. Slated to release in theatres on 5 September, the ninth film in The Conjuring Universe marks the final chapter of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s ghost-hunting journey on screen.
The trailer opens with chilling voiceovers of everyday people sharing their encounters, which soon spiral into haunting chaos. A caption from the film’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle warns: “Discover why this case ended it all. The Conjuring: Last Rites – Only in Theaters September 5.”
Directed by Michael Chaves, who previously helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II, this instalment takes viewers to 1986 Pennsylvania. The story is inspired by the real-life Smurl haunting, involving Jack and Janet Smurl, whose home was allegedly tormented by a demonic presence for years.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson step back into their familiar roles, this time facing a malevolent force they’ve encountered before. But the stakes are higher now—the evil appears to be targeting their daughter Judy, played by Mia Tomlinson. Ben Hardy joins her as Tony Spera, Judy’s boyfriend.
The trailer hints that what starts as another case for the Warrens soon turns personal. Familiar faces like Steve Coulter return as Father Gordon, while Rebecca Calder, Kíla Lord Cassidy, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook join the cast. The film’s script is penned by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, with the story developed by James Wan and Johnson-McGoldrick.
Whether or not one believes in the real-life Warrens, the cinematic version of their cases has become a pop culture phenomenon since 2013. With Last Rites, the franchise aims to close the chapter with the same blend of dread, drama, and emotional stakes that made it a global horror success. For fans of supernatural horror, this may be the final goodbye worth watching goosebumps guaranteed.
