Sushmita Sen opens up on parenting daughters; says, 'I am as old as my children'

Sushmita Sen spoke about the challenges of being a single parent

Sushmita Sen did something as a public figure that many would not dare to think of. At a time, when society was still orthodox about a number of things she went ahead and adopted two daughters. Over the years, Renee and Alisah have grown up to be wonderful young ladies. The actress took a long break from films to focus on her family. In between, she also faced some serious health issues. While Renee is now working towards a career in the creative field, Alisah is studying abroad. Her younger daughter is an exceptional student. Sushmita Sen has also earned love from people for her trailblazing move in life. 

“I want to give myself a pat on my back as a mother everyday. That’s self-love. I am not someone who has to be told ki aap kitni achchi maa hai. I already know that (smiles)!”

Sushmita Sen said she had adopted her first child at the age of 24. The second one came ten years later when she was 34. Sushmita Sen, who is a former Miss Universe said it was tough at different phases of life. And she had no one to share her emotions. Sushmita Sen said that people felt she could do it easily as she was a celebrity. But she said being in public scrutiny and raising two daughters all alone was harder. But she said it is a very gratifying experience. She was quoted as saying, “I often say that I am as old as my children, so it is not like I know more than them; I am learning everyday with them. Being a mother has given me a sense of purpose.” 

She feels it is a bigger achievement than being a Miss Universe or working as a creative artiste. She describes the emotions as far greater. She was quoted as saying, “It gives me this feeling that something will live on as love after you are done and dusted.”

The actress underwent a heart surgery in 2023. She had angioplasty with the placement of a stent. Sushmita Sen said her daughters advise her to follow all healthy practices that she tells them to do. But she said they’re not fearful.
